MISSOURI INTRO INTO THE GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY OF THE STATE OF  First Europeans to visit Missouri were remnants of the Spanish EARLY HISTORY Conquistadors and French explorers from Canada.  Marquette and Joliet provide the first account of Missouri in 1673.  1682: the area was claimed by La Salle for France.  Part of the Louisiana Territory – culture influenced mainly by the French  First permanent settlement: St. Genevieve (1730s)  1764: St. Louis was established as a fur trading post  1803: France sold Louisiana Territory to the US  What was this called?  Lewis and Clark explored the area – taking off from St. Charles in 1804  Missouri Compromise in 1820: allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state  Aug. 28, 1820: first state election was held  1820: Missouri was authorized to write a constitution  Two house legislature: House of Reps and Senate  2 Senators are elected represent the state in D.C.  Each county was to have one delegate in the house  Max number of legislators was 100 (# was increased was population grew)  Missouri was admitted to the US union on August 10. 1821 (24th state)  Civil War divided the state  Most important battle in MO: Battle of Wilson’s Creek
