Vikings on top as Wainuiomata suffer first defeat of the season

Wins to Porirua and Randwick sees the Vikings leapfrog Wainui to move into top spot whilst the Kingfishers win over the Lions moves them into 3rd in what is shaping up as very close premiership fight.

Porirua 15 def. Te Aroha 10 The Vikings ground out a tough win over the defending premiers at Te Whiti Park. Porirua coach Peter Rikiriki described the match as one of the most bruising he had seen in a long time. Porirua lead 10-4 at half time through tries to AJ Akavi and Tyson Tamakaha but it was the Eels who drew first blood in the second half leveling the match and setting up a great 30 minutes. The Eels were lead well up front by Chance Tauri who made a number of breaks and nippy half Grayson Putu. It was AJ Akavi that crossed for the match winner for the Vikings with just 5 minutes to go and Anton Wereta slotted the drop goal for good measure after the final siren.

Randwick 22 def. Wainuiomata 10 Randwick, the competitions early leaders, ended a 2 run losing streak at Naenae Park giving Wainui their first loss after drawing in the first round clash. The Kingfishers lead 10-6 at half time through tries to Eddie Aukino and young centre Benson Tago. Tago last years Taita College league captain and winner of the player of competition is a rising star and crossed in the 2nd half for a double to seal the victory for Randwick. Josh Drysdale back at hooker for Randwick controlled the game well and Kam Kamuta added some steal to the backline defense. Wainuiomata were well served by Wayne Paki at fullback and Andrew Ioane but were well beaten on the day by a team that was hungrier according to Wainui coach Darren Cassidy.

Upper Hutt 26 def. Petone 20 Upper Hutt overcame a spirited Petone fight back to claim a much needed victory and the Hughie PaulTrophy at McEwan Park. The Tigers dominated the middle of the park with big front rowers Ben Manu and Ngatu Mauheni leading the way. It was looking to be a long day for the Panthers with tries to Paora Wikita and Ben Manu pushing Upper Hutt out to 12 nil after 18 minutes. Petone hit back with tries to hardworking hooker Fabian Keepa and livewire standoff Petera Williams-Rikiriki to leave the score 12-10 at the break. Again it was the Tigers that started the half better racing out to 22-10 lead before Petone hit back with tries to TrulinToatoa and a 2nd to Rikiriki to set up a frantic final 10 minutes. Petone with the momentum bombed a couple of chances with the line open before a try to centre Kerry Whaanga with 3 to go sealed the win for Upper Hutt.

University 26 def. St George 20 University hung to defeat a fast finishing Dragons team at Kilburn Park. For the 2nd week in a row the Hunters exploded out of the blocks and lead 20- nil at the break. The Dragons regathered at half time and drew level at 20 all with 10 minutes remaining but the Hunters scored the last try with Danny Koliva dotting down. St George however can expect to be much more competitive in the weeks to come with Australian born half back Kelvin Caspani having his first run in the top grade after setting the reserve grade alight over the last few weeks. SUSPENDED FOR 10 YEARS FROM FOR MATCH FIXING BUT BECOMES A KIWI WITHIN FIVE YEARS

The match fixing happened in , becoming a Kiwi happened out of Wellington. In 1904 in Auckland two prominent rugby union players, Paddy Long (Newton) an Auckland rep and then current All Black, and Kenneth Brooking George (City) were suspended for 10 years by the . They were found guilty of match fixing with bookmakers (then legitimate in ), in a game between their Newton and City club sides. It cost Long a place in the ‘Original’ All Blacks team that toured England and France in 1905-06. When the All Golds returned from their pioneering tour, before they dispersed, they arranged a benefit match for Albert Baskerville’s widowed mother, at Athletic Park, on Saturday 13 June, 1908, the first game of rugby league ever played in New Zealand. In addition to the 19 All Golds who were available to play, six players from local rugby union clubs, Poneke (1), Melrose (2) both were also Wellington Union reps and Petone (3), took the field plus P George (ex Auckland) but living in Wellington, making up the 26 players. In 1909, a second New Zealand of ‘Professional All Blacks’ toured Australia with a tough schedule of 10 games that included three tests and five state games, between June 5 and July 3. Among the 18 players selected, with nine from Wellington was stand-off ‘P George’ who had played well for his new province in a couple of games. Remember that no club rugby league was played until 1912. There is no clarification as to why Kenneth Brooking George played in ellingtonW under the initial P, other than to assume he wanted to play down his true identity, because in the New Zealand Free Lance of 20 June 1908, where comments about the George in the ‘B’ team in the Baskerville Benefit match were prominent it states “who five years ago was put out of action for 10 years by theAuckland Rugby Union”. When one of Wellington’s four foundation clubs, the Newtown Rugby League Club was formed in June 1912, among the committee was K George. In 1913 New South Wales toured New Zealand playing 11 games and won the lot, including two games against New Zealand, winning the first in Auckland 33-19 and the second at Newtown Park, in Wellington 58-19. Ken George, playing club football for Newtown, was recalled four years after he first played for the Kiwis, to play for the Kiwis in the game at Newtown Park. In between the New Zealand games NSW defeated Wellington 34-18.

The 1909 New Zealand team Back row: Ronald MacDonald (Auckland), Albert House (Wellington), Ernie Buckland (Taranaki) Third row: Daniel Fraser (Wellington, manager), Adam Lile (Taranaki), Con Byrne (Nelson), Henry Knight (Wellington), John Spencer (Wellington), Bill Trevarthen (Auckland) Second row: Harold Rowe (Auckland), Gordon Hooker (Taranaki), Con Sullivan (Wellington), James Barber (Wellington, captain), Bert King (Wellington), George Spencer (Wellington), Thomas Houghton (Auckland) Front row: Arthur Carlaw (Auckland), Ken George (Wellington) leadership through league wainuiomata high school festival

After 2 postponements due to horrendous weather conditions the stars finally aligned for Wainuiomata High School to complete the Leadership through League Flag Festival. 8 teams from 4 primary schools enjoyed tropical outdoor weather in a fun filled day of flag league which was won by Konini Primary School.

Both teams from Konini battled it out in the final, with the number 2 team winning in the first period of overtime after scores were tied at the end of regulation time. Arakura, Pukeatua, and St Claudines gallantly mounted fine challenges throughout the day only to come up short.

The Event Manager Tyler Tane was impressed with his Event Crew which included Tyler Jones, Viktor Moe, Atalina Milovale, Tyler Garrett, Percy Sullivan, Ida Roivas, Matilda Johansson, Jake Thompson, Montaya Wharehinga, Matthew Muru, Faresa Tasele, Soloman Tomokino and First Aid officer Michelle Asher and paid particular mention to referee’s that also backed up from the above group.

Head of the Physical Education & Health, Kath McGuinness, was very impressed with the way the College Students put the festival together by themselves and commended the way the students conducted themselves throughout the day, demonstrating maturity and tenacity to get the job done. Greg Selwyn
