Pornification 19/7/07 10:56 am Page 23 –2– The Golden Age of Porn: Nostalgia and History in Cinema Susanna Paasonen and Laura Saarenmaa The mainstreaming of pornography is indebted to the success of feature-length hardcore films of the 1970s. Shot on 35 mm film, productions such as Deep Throat (1972), Behind the Green Door (1972), The Devil in Miss Jones (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) and Debbie Does Dallas (1978) were widely screened both in the USA and internationally. These films have since been estab- lished as classics (Buscombe 2004: 30) and milestones in both scholarly and popular porn historiographies. While some identify the so-called ‘golden age of porn’ through North American legislation and as ranging from 1957 from 1973 (Lane 2000: 22–3), it was in the 1970s and early 1980s that porn shifted towards the mainstream. In a trend titled by the New York Times as porno chic, pornography became fashionable, gained mainstream publicity and popularity (McNair 2002: 62–3; Schaefer 2004: 371; Wyatt 1999). During the past decade, this golden age has been reminisced in films such as People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Boogie Nights (1997) and Rated X (2000), numerous documentaries – including the critically acclaimed Inside Deep Throat (2005) – and books.1 This body of popular porn historiography depicts the decade as one of quality films with real stories, personal performers and talented directors, in contrast to the 1980s of video distribution, inflation of the porn industry, rise of AIDS and conservative backlash. With notable exceptions such as the French Le pornographe (2001) and the Spanish–Danish co-production Torremolinos 73 (2003), European histories have not been reminisced to the same degree.

  • Appendix 1: Selected Films
Appendix 1: Selected Films The very random selection of films in this appendix may appear to be arbitrary, but it is an attempt to suggest, from a varied collection of titles not otherwise fully covered in this volume, that approaches to the treatment of sex in the cinema can represent a broad church indeed. Not all the films listed below are accomplished – and some are frankly maladroit – but they all have areas of interest in the ways in which they utilise some form of erotic expression. Barbarella (1968, directed by Roger Vadim) This French/Italian adaptation of the witty and transgressive science fiction comic strip embraces its own trash ethos with gusto, and creates an eccentric, utterly arti- ficial world for its foolhardy female astronaut, who Jane Fonda plays as basically a female Candide in space. The film is full of off- kilter sexuality, such as the evil Black Queen played by Anita Pallenberg as a predatory lesbian, while the opening scene features a space- suited figure stripping in zero gravity under the credits to reveal a naked Jane Fonda. Her peekaboo outfits in the film are cleverly designed, but belong firmly to the actress’s pre- feminist persona – although it might be argued that Barbarella herself, rather than being the sexual plaything for men one might imagine, in fact uses men to grant herself sexual gratification. The Blood Rose/La Rose Écorchée (aka Ravaged, 1970, directed by Claude Mulot) The delirious The Blood Rose was trumpeted as ‘The First Sex Horror Film Ever Made’. In its uncut European version, Claude Mulot’s film begins very much like an arthouse movie of the kind made by such directors as Alain Resnais: unortho- dox editing and tricks with time and the film’s chronology are used to destabilise the viewer.

  • SEX WISHES and VIRGIN DREAMS Zebedy Colt’S Reactionary Queer Heterosmut and the Elusive Porn Archive
SEX WISHES AND VIRGIN DREAMS Zebedy Colt’s Reactionary Queer Heterosmut and the Elusive Porn Archive Whitney Strub Midway through The Story of Joanna, a 1975 pornographic film, the decadent aristocrat Jason (Jamie Gillis), having dedicated the film’s first hour to “breaking in” his masochistic new paramour Joanna (Terri Hall), receives a massage from his male butler. As the butler works his back with a tender efficiency, Jason rolls over for a chest rub. Kneading slowly down Jason’s body, the butler smoothly segues into fellatio, as the director Gerard Damiano’s camera records Jason’s penis inflat- ing from flaccidity to erection. The scene ends not in the traditional ejaculatory “money shot” but in a blurring of visual focus that recalls the blurring of sexual boundaries just depicted (fig. 1). That The Story of Joanna presented itself as a heterosexual film is undeni- able; terming it “the most definitive erotic film of our time,” its newspaper adver- tising situated it as such by leaving its status unmarked, in contrast to the gay or bisexual porn films that without fail announced themselves clearly (i.e., Boys in the Sand [1971], Both Ways [1975]). Thus the butler blowjob, when recognized at all, tends to be framed as an anomalous rupture in the monolithic straightness of heterosexual porn. Robert Rimmer (1986: 138), in X- Rated Videotape Guide, calls it “the only homosexual scene that I’ve ever seen in a film for heterosexuals,” while the more scholarly Linda Williams (1989: 220) deems it “quite exceptional in fea- ture length heterosexual pornography .

Originally published in: Feona Attwood and Clarissa Smith with Brian McNair (eds.) The Routledge Companion to Media, Sex and Sexuality. London: Routledge, 2018, pp. 290-299 This version © Steve Jones 2017 Sex and Horror Steve Jones The combination of sex and horror may be disquieting to many, but the two are natural (if perhaps gruesome) bedfellows. In fact, sex and horror coincide with such regularity in contemporary horror fiction that the two concepts appear to be at least partially intertwined. This is not to suggest that the sex–horror confluence is an exclusively contemporary phenomenon.1 For instance, Hunter Gardner (2015) traces the lineage of contemporary psychosexual horror fiction back to antiquity. Brian Godaw (2002: 187–208) maps the relationship between sex and horrific violence in the Bible in order to anchor his exploration of modern horror cinema. Cathal Tohill and Pete Tombs (1995: 29) posit that the focus on violence and sex they find in Italian cinema is little more than ‘a modern day version of the ancient Roman circus’; ‘blood, passion...violence and sex were an integral part of these spectacles’. It is unsurprising, then, that the horror genre boasts a bounty of sexual themes and sexually driven plots. The sex–horror relationship is sometimes connotative rather than overt; examples of this relationship range from the seduction overtones of Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922, dir. F.W. Murnau) and the juxtaposition of nudity and horror promised by European exploitation filmmakers (see Shipka, 2011: 5; Olney, 2013: 30), to Hellraiser’s (1987, dir. Clive Barker) sadomasochistic iconography. More overt explorations of sex are offered in horror films that are based around the porn industry, including Zivot i Smrt Porno Bande/The Life and Death of a Porno Gang (2009, dir.

SELLING THE SPLAT PACK: THE DVD REVOLUTION AND THE AMERICAN HORROR FILM Mark Bernard A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2010 Committee: Dr. Cynthia Baron, Advisor Dr. Scott A. Magelssen Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Paul McDonald Dr. Maisha Wester ii ABSTRACT Dr. Cynthia Baron, Advisor In 2006, journalists began writing about the emergence of a group of young filmmakers who specialized in horror films featuring torture and graphic violence. Because of their gory and bloody movies, these directors came to be known as “the Splat Pack,” and they were depicted by the press as subversive outsiders rebelling against the Hollywood machine. However, what many discussions of the Splat Pack ignore is how the success of this group of directors was brought about and enabled by the industrial structure of Hollywood at the middle of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Drawing from political economy methodology, this study seeks to understand and illuminate the industrial changes and realignments that gave rise to the Splat Pack, first by looking at how industrial changes have affected the content of horror films of the past, and secondly by examining how the advent of DVD technology made way for the gory, “Unrated” films of the Splat Pack. DVD played a major role in the rise of the Splat Pack by changing the way horror films were presented to their potential audiences and by leading to an industry acceptance of “Unrated” films. With this in mind, this study then turns to an analysis of several key films directed by the Splat Pack and uses the commodity form of the DVD as a lens through which to interpret these films.

This work will explore productions and representations in 13 pornographic films across several decades spanning from the 1970s to the early 2000s. In sum, this endeavor attempts to examine attributed behavior, qualities, and associated tropes that work to either affirm or negate female bisexual identity through character construction. Findings indicate a series of tropes and themes emerge across the decades including female bisexuality as something the girls do, the violent and/or manipulative female bisexual character, female bisexuality as a result of victimhood or trauma, and finally, the hypersexual female bisexual character. I certify that the Abstract is a correct representation of the content of this thesis.
