Sadam Ahmad Mahmoud Makhamra Date: 3-8-2016 I Abstract The aim of this research is to assess the in-vitro antiproliferative activities of the crude extract, preparative HPLC fractions and pure active compounds in selected Palestinian plants, namely Cuscuta palaestina, Gundelia tournefortii, Pimpinella anisum and Ephedra alata. Chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques such as analytical HPLC-PDA, preparative HPLC-PDA, GC-MS, 1H-NMR, and LC-MS and biological assays were used to achieve this goal. Cuscuta palaestina is listed as native plant of flora palaestina. The methanolic and hexane extracts were used to determine its activity against human colorectal carcinoma cell line. -

However, recent analyses of molecular data provide a phylogenetic framework for investigations of morphological traits, albeit with few informative characters in the investigated gene regions. We document morphological, anatomical and histological variation patterns in the female reproduc- tive unit and test the hypothesis that some Early Cretaceous fossils, which share synapomorphies with Ephedra, are members of the extant clade. Results indicate that some morphological features are evolutionarily informative although intraspecific variation is evident. Histology and anatomy of cone bracts and seed envelopes show clade-specific variation patterns. There is little evidence for an inclusion of the Cretaceous fossils in the extant clade. Previous pharmacological studies revealed that Ficus religiosa possessed antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, anti-Parkinson's, anticonvulsant, anti-amnesic, anticholinergic, antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, analgesic, cytotoxic, anti-ulcer, wound healing, antioxidant, anti- asthmatic, reproductive, hepato-, nephro- and dermato- protective effects. ALISO 13(2), 1992, pp. 255-295 WOOD, BARK, AND PITH ANATOMY OF OLD WORLD SPECIES OF EPHEDRA AND SUMMARY FOR THE GENUS SHERWIN CARLQUIST Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and Department of Biology, Pomona College Claremont, California 91711 ABSTRACT Quantitative and qualitative data are presented for wood anatomy of 35 collections representing 22 Old World species of Ephedra; the survey of bark and pith anatomy is based on some of these species. Character-state ranges similar to those of the New World species are reported, although more numerous species show vessel absence in latewood. Little diminution in vessel diameter or density occurs in latewood of the eight species that are scandant or sprawling. Helical thickenings or sculpture occur in vessels of about a third of the Old World species, but these thickenings are clearly related to pits, often not very prominent, and rarely present in tracheids (alternative expressions characterize helical thickenings in the New World species). Helical thickenings are statistically correlated to xe- romorphic wood features such as narrower vessels and fewer vessels per mm- of transection. Paucity of vessels is an indicator of xeromorphy (rather than abundance, as in dicotyledons) because tracheids. which have optimal conductive safety, are present instead of vessels. Near vessellessness is reported for E. distachya var. monosiachya, E. gerardiana. and E. monosperma. A high degree of wood xeromorphy characterizes species of the highlands of Central Asia and the Middle East, where extremes of drought and cold prevail. A close approach to storied structure is reported in three species. Pro cumbent ray cells, absent at first, are produced as stems increase in diameter. -
