  • Women Postmasters
Women Postmasters Women served as Postmasters in the United States more than a century before they won the right to vote. Over the course of the 1800s, the number of women Postmasters increased from fewer than a dozen to more than 6,000. By the end of the twentieth century, more than half of all Postmasters were women. Although sometimes popularly called "postmistresses," their official title has always been "Postmaster." Women Postmasters in the Colonies Several women ran Post Offices under the British postal system in North America. In Salem, Massachusetts, the Post Office was reportedly kept by two women, Lydia Hill and Molly Gill.1 Hill reportedly served as Postmaster for many years before her death in 1768.2 Sarah Goddard was no stranger to postal business — her late husband, Giles Goddard, had been the Postmaster of New London, Connecticut. In 1764, Sarah joined her son William in Providence, Rhode Island, where he ran a newspaper and print shop and served as Postmaster. Shortly thereafter, William left Providence to pursue business ventures in New York and Philadelphia, leaving the Providence Post Office and print shop in the care of Sarah.3 In 1773, William Goddard moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he started another newspaper and printing business. A few months later, he was joined by his sister Mary Katherine, “a skilled printer in her own right.”4 While William travelled, she ran the day-to-day business of the print shop, which by 1775 had become Baltimore’s Post Office, with Mary Katherine serving as Postmaster. First Women Postmasters in the United States Mary Katherine Goddard was the only known woman Postmaster when Benjamin Franklin was named the first American Postmaster General in July 1775, making her the first known woman Postmaster in the United Colonies, predecessor of the United States.

  • David Hume Kennerly Archive Creation Project
DAVID HUME KENNERLY ARCHIVE CREATION PROJECT 50 YEARS BEHIND THE SCENES OF HISTORY The David Hume Kennerly Archive is an extraordinary collection of images, objects and recollections created and collected by a great American photographer, journalist, artist and historian documenting 50 years of United States and world history. The goal of the DAVID HUME KENNERLY ARCHIVE CREATION PROJECT is to protect, organize and share its rare and historic objects – and to transform its half-century of images into a cutting-edge digital educational tool that is fully searchable and available to the public for research and artistic appreciation. 2 DAVID HUME KENNERLY Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist David Hume Kennerly has spent his career documenting the people and events that have defined the world. The last photographer hired by Life Magazine, he has also worked for Time, People, Newsweek, Paris Match, Der Spiegel, Politico, ABC, NBC, CNN and served as Chief White House Photographer for President Gerald R. Ford. Kennerly’s images convey a deep understanding of the forces shaping history and are a peerless repository of exclusive primary source records that will help educate future generations. His collection comprises a sweeping record of a half-century of history and culture – as if Margaret Bourke-White had continued her work through the present day. 3 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE The David Hume Kennerly collection of photography, historic artifacts, letters and objects might be one of the largest and most historically significant private collections ever produced and collected by a single individual. Its 50-year span of images and objects tells the complete story of the baby boom generation.

Cooper, Anderson (b. 1967) by Linda Rapp Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Anderson Cooper. Entry Copyright © 2012 glbtq, Inc. Photograph by Flickr Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com user minds-eye. CC-BY- SA 2.0. Award-winning television journalist Anderson Cooper has traveled the globe, reporting from war zones and scenes of natural and man-made disasters, as well as covering stories on political and social issues. Cooper is a ubiquitous presence on American television, for in addition to being a news anchor, he also hosts a talk show. Cooper is the son of heiress and designer Gloria Vanderbilt and her fourth husband, Wyatt Cooper. In his memoir, Dispatches from the Edge (2006), Cooper stated that his parents' "backgrounds could not have been more different." Whereas his mother descends from one of American best-known and wealthiest families, his father was born into a poor farm family in the small town of Quitman, Mississippi. When he was sixteen he moved to the Ninth Ward of New Orleans with his mother and five of his seven siblings. Anderson Cooper wrote that his "father fell in love with New Orleans from the start" and delighted in its culture. After graduating from Francis T. Nicholls High School, however, Wyatt Cooper headed to California to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Although he found work on both screen and stage, he eventually turned to screenwriting for Twentieth Century Fox. Wyatt Cooper and Vanderbilt married in 1964 and took up residence in a luxurious mansion in New York City. The couple had two sons, Carter, born in 1965, and Anderson, born on June 3, 1967.

  • TIMELINE of YALE FOOTBALL Updated As of February 2018
TIMELINE OF YALE FOOTBALL Updated as of February 2018 Oct. 31, 1872 David Schley Schaff, Elliot S. Miller, Samuel Elder and other members of the class of 1873 call a meeting of the Yale student body. From it emerges the Yale Football Association, the first formal entity to govern the game at Yale. Schaff is elected president and team captain. Nov. 16, 1872 With faculty approval, Yale meets Columbia, the nearest football-playing college, at Hamilton Park in New Haven. The game is essentially soccer with 20-man sides, played on a field 400 by 250 feet. Yale wins 3-0, Tommy Sherman scoring the first goal and Lew Irwin the other two. Nov. 15, 1873 Yale and Princeton inaugurate what will become Yale’s longest rivalry. Princeton wins 3 goals to 0. Nov. 13, 1875 Yale and Harvard meet for the first time at Hamilton Park. The game is played under the so-called “concessionary rules”—15 players on a side and running with the ball permitted as in rugby, a round ball and only goals counting as in soccer. A crowd of 2,000 pays 50 cents a head—twice the normal price for a Yale game—to watch Harvard win 4-0. 1880 Walter Camp, in his third year as Yale’s delegate at the Intercollegiate Football Association rules convention, persuades the meeting to accept 11-man, rather than 15-man, sides. He also replaces rugby’s scrum with the scrimmage, which “takes place when the holder of the ball…puts it down on the ground in front of him and puts it in play by snapping it back with his foot.” Nov.
