A! er an overview of relevant ideas and observations from the mesmeric, hypnosis, and spiritualistic literatures, I focus on the writings of Jules Baillarger, Alfred Binet, Paul Blocq, Théodore Flournoy, Jules Héricourt, William James, Pierre Janet, Ambroise August Liébeault, Frederic W. H. Myers, Julian Ochorowicz, Charles Richet, Hippolyte Taine, Paul Tascher, and Edouard von Hartmann. While some of their ideas reduced mediumship solely to intra-psychic processes, others considered as well veridical phenomena. The speculations of these individuals, involving personation, and di" erent memory states, were part of a general interest in the unconscious mind, and in automatisms, hysteria, and hypnosis during the period in question.     The Island of Crossed Destinies human and other-than-human perspectives in Afro-Cuban divination Anastasios Panagiotopoulos Ph.D. in Social Anthropology The University of Edinburgh 2011 I, Anastasios Panagiotopoulos, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own and I am the sole composer of it. I also confirm that the work has not been submitted for any other degree or professional qualification. i Abstract This thesis focuses on the significance and articulation of divinatory practices in Cuba a place where a number of different religious traditions (mainly of African and European origins) have come to coexist. Reflecting on the particularities of my ethnography, I concentrate on three such traditions: Ocha/Ifá , Palo Monte and Espiritismo . However, rather than engaging with them as different ‘traditions’ or assuming their syncretic character, I attempt to explore the way in which they constitute distinct but related perspectives on human destiny or, as my friends and informants put it, on people’s ‘path’ ( camino )perspectives, that is, which continuously constitute and recalibrate each other. Echoing the work of authors such as Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, I try to illustrate the nature of these perspectives by bringing to the fore the ways in which different divinatory practices instantiate and embody the efficacy or ‘point of view’ of different ‘other-than-human’ beings be they deities or the dead. Thus, while in the case of Ocha/Ifá and its oracles, I concentrate on the relation between ‘humans’ and the orichas (deities), my discussion of divinatory practices within Palo Monte and Espiritismo places the emphasis on the relation between ‘humans’ and various kinds of the dead ( muertos ).

The phenomena of religion (as defined by the researcher) are examined: practices, rites, rituals, ceremonies, symbols, artifacts, belief systems, etc. b. These phenomena are analyzed rationally in light of the underlying assumptions of the researcher. The analysis is used to develop models or theories of the religion being studied. c. The problem of reductionism: the bulk of social science approaches to religion overlook the theological content and are interested in fitting the observed phenomena into the researcher's paradigm (the following descriptions are adapted from Hiebert; for extended discussion see Evans-Pritchard, Theories of Primitive Religion and Taylor, Beyond Explanation, 17-66): i. Edward B. Tylor's evolutionary model, which envisioned a development in religions from animism (or magic) to religion and then from religion to science. He saw religion as fundamentally an illusion brought about by the immaturity (in evolutionary terms) of the minds that proposed the ideas. Frazer's contemporaries also manifested similar attitudes. ii. A. R. Radcliffe-Brown's functional theory, which limited the consideration of religion to a people's self-expression serving as a social glue (truth was not important, only religion's function in holding a society together) iii. Freud's psychoanalytic view, in which religion is explained in terms of projected emotions and unconscious motivations by which we seek to deal with our guilt and anxiety. 2. I invite you all to join together in one minute of silence, every day at 12 pm wherever you are in the world, vibrating for our brothers and sisters who are still steeped in ignorance of disunity and misunderstanding. Peace is very important... Real peace comes from within a cheerful heart and an understanding mind which acts, and trusts. It is achieved within an atmosphere of love and devotion, because the harmony which kindles the dynamics of a flourishing life derives from a conscience illumined by Divine Laws.

Garland's literary notebooks and manuscripts--with the author's revisions--are also included, documenting the early working stages of Garland's autobiographies and memoirs, fiction, plays, poetry, published articles, and lectures. The Garland papers also contain the typescripts, notebooks, interview transcripts, correspondence, and research material created by Garland for his biography of Ulysses S. Grant published in 1898. Lastly, the collection holds hundreds of the Garland family's photographs and memorabilia dating as early as the 1850s.
