W. Henrich, U .S . Geological Survey, and D . N . Daniel, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources ABSTRACT determined drainage-area data for use in hydrologic investigations, such as low-flow frequency and Drainage areas were determined for more than flood-frequency studies . It makes drainage-area 7,000 sites in Wisconsin's 11 major river basins, data readily available in an easy to use format. including all named streams draining 5 or more square miles, and all unnamed streams draining 10 Drainage-basin divides were delineated on the or more square miles. Also determined are drainage latest available U.S. Geological Survey topographic areas for gaging stations, sewage-treatment plants, quadrangle maps and procedures recommended by dams, major highway crossings, and other sites the Subcommittee on Hydrology, Federal Inter- where discharge measurements or water-quality Agency River Basin Committee (written commun., data are available. 1951) were used to determine the drainage areas shown in this report. In some cases, the delineated Drainage areas were delineated on U.S. Geolog- basin divides were corrected to reflect manmade ical Survey topographic maps. Drainage areas are changes not shown on the maps, such as effects of shown in tabular form under six headings : station municipal storm-sewer systems and diversion of number; stream name, rank, and location; town- water for irrigation or agricultural purposes. For ship, range, and section; county; type of site; and streams with headwaters in Minnesota or Michigan, drainage area. Eleven major-river-basin maps show drainage-area data were obtained from the U .S. the location and station number of key sites . Geological Survey offices of those States at the most downstream station in the State; the drainage areas were then delineated to the mouths of the streams INTRODUCTION by the Wisconsin office of the U.S. Geological Survey . The purpose of this report is to present drain- age-area data for specified sites on Wisconsin Previous reports by Barry K. Holmstrom streams. The report lists drainage, areas at all sites (1972), Robert W. Devaul (1973), and Marvin D. on named streams of at least 5 mil and at all sites on Duerk (1974) are included in this report. We would unnamed streams of 10 mil or more. Also, areas like to acknowledge the contributions of Mark A. have been determined for sewage-treatment plants, Riggle and Bill Shaw (Wisconsin Department of dams, major highway crossings, gaging stations, Natural Resources), and of Mark J. Hansen, David and other sites where discharge measurements or J. Henle, and Randall W. Uteck (U.S . Geological water-quality data are available. Survey) . Their efforts were extremely valuable in digitizing and processing of the data in this report. Drainage area is one of the important factors required for planning and design of water-related projects. This report provides uniform, accurately EXPLANATION OF DRAINAGE-AREA TABLES Station Number 1 . Gaging stations:

Many temporary towns were created in order to house the workers and their families and provide basic amenities needed to survive in an isolated environment. These communities typically lasted until the extraction of the hardwood was complete and then communities would abandon their makeshift dwellings and move on to the next stand of trees.

Individual chapters are available for download in PDF format through the Wisconsin DNR website (http://dnr.wi.gov/, keyword “landscapes”). The introductory chapters (Part 1) and supporting materials (Part 3) should be downloaded along with individual ecological landscape chapters in Part 2 to aid in understanding and using the ecological landscape chapters. In addition to containing the full chapter of each ecological landscape, the website highlights key information such as the ecological landscape at a glance, Species of Greatest Conservation Need, natural community management opportunities, general management opportunities, and ecological landscape and Landtype Association maps (Appendix K of each ecological landscape chapter). These web pages are meant to be dynamic and were designed to work in close association with materials from the Wisconsin Wildlife Action Plan as well as with information on Wisconsin’s natural communities from the Wisconsin Natural Heritage Inventory Program.
