Congratulations to Worlingworth Primary School Ofsted Award We are delighted to announce that following our recent Ofsted inspection, we have been awarded an Outstanding rating in all areas. Ofsted graded the school ‘Outstanding’ in all five categories: leadership and management; be- haviour and safety; quality of teaching; achievement of pupils; and early years provision. We are delighted that the school has unusually managed to receive two consecutive Outstanding judgements, having been graded Out- standing in February 2016, as only 2% of schools manage to achieve this. A copy of the Ofsted report is available on the school website to read in more detail, however a few key points from the inspector to be noted are : "At Worlingworth, the excellent teaching and support means that pupils make substantial and sustained progress over time." “From the moment that pupils enter the playground in the morning, they are valued as individuals. However, there is a real sense of being a close team and part of the wider community. The school is a core part of the village community. Pupils take part in regular events, such as the flower festival, welcome village members to their produc- tions and raise money for local charities. “ “Teaching is of an exceptionally high standard across the school. Teach- ers ensure that lessons are both engaging and well-structured to en- able pupils to learn well. They have extremely high expectations of what pupils can achieve. “ “Staff work very closely together and there is a real sense of family. All adults know every pupil as an individual and, equally, all pupils know each other well.”

This grading reflects the hard work and commitment from the staff, our ex- cellent governors, parents, pupils and members of the community in continu- ing to make Worlingworth the great school that we know it is! Now, we will continue to drive the school forward, adapting and improving to ensure that each and every pupil has the best primary school education possible. Well done everyone! (also see page 5)

Zillah's funeral was held at St Marys on 25th July

3 The next meeting of the Parish Council is on Wednesday 21st August at 7.30pm in the Community Centre, all are welcome. [email protected] Minutes of previous parish council meetings can be viewed on the village website at www.worlingworth.onesuffolk.net Disposal of Old Paint – update The Parish Council has been looking into the possibility of arranging a paint collection in the village (this is following a request at the Annual Parish Meet- ing for a way to dispose of old paint tins) unfortunately due to Health & Safety regulation the service offered by the District Council is only available to private individuals. The Parish Council has been advised to signpost parishioners to the District Council for safe collection and disposal of paints therefore please follow the guidelines as below: Water Based Paint: If you have less than 1/4 tin left, leave the lid off and mix with dry sand or soil until completely solidified. Then double bag it and place in your black bin. No liquid paint must be placed in your bin or taken to a Recycling Centre. Oil Based Paint: Please make contact with the District Council to arrange collection. Mid covers Worlingworth and collections can be booked www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/waste-services/hazardous-waste-collections/ or by ringing 0300 1234 000 and selecting Option 4. It is possible if a group of private individuals want to ‘pool’ their tins together to arrange one collection, but there would need to be one designated name person who will be held responsible for declaring the nature of the waste material.

Dog Fouling in the Village – again! The Parish Council funds a number of dog litter bins around the village, so there are plenty of facilities to enable dog owners to clear up after their pets. Don’t forget to take your poop bag when you go walkies and remember there is a potential fine of up to £80 for not clearing up after your dog. Please clear up on all footpaths (not just tarmac pavements), especially with the school holidays just starting and potentially more young people and children using our footpath network.

ADVANCE NOTICE: This year’s DIGGER TURNBULL GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ will be held in the Worlingworth Community Centre on Saturday September 28th at 7.30 pm. It will again be teams of four; £6 per person and a sandwich supper will be provided. Early booking is advisable as this is always a popular event. To book your table, call Geoff and Janette on 628768. News from Worlingworth Primary school

BEDFIELD AND MONK SOHAM SPORTS CLUB 2019 FETE The committee of Bedfield and Monk Soham Sports Club would like to sincerely thank everyone who was involved in the fete which was held on a very wet Saturday afternoon on the 6th July 2019. This includes those who helped with the organisation, the exhibitors and all the brave souls who braved the awful continuous rain, especially the many of you who stayed to the end! Also, our grateful thanks go to everyone who assisted in setting up, dismantling and helping with the running of the fete on the day. Despite the weather, we expect to have made an approximate net profit of about £1200, some of which will go towards our project to replace and relocate the play area on the sports field.

Once again, many13 thanks to you all Monk Soham Rev’d. Rebecca would like to thank all those who attended, contributed or prepared the church and churchyard for her first presiding at the Eucharist on 30th June 2019, during the Benefice Service held at St Peter’s Church, Monk Soham, on the occasion of the Patronal festival. Thanks go to those who cleaned, cut grass, tidied up, provided or arranged flowers, read lessons, contributed to the reading of the intercessions, offered to help, provided refreshments or helped to serve after the service. The Bell Ringers provided us with a welcoming and joyful sound as we approached and entered the church. The Worlingworth Benefice Choir attended and led the singing. Also, thanks go to Rev’d. David M. for deaconing at the service and Rev’d David B. for assisting and supervising. Thank you all for making it a wonderful celebration.

14 Dear friends, August 2019

When attending a Holy Communion service, you will mostly see the priest wearing a distinctive garment unlike anything in modern-day fashion. Typically, it has some sort of embellishment or symbol on it, and comes in several different colours. What is it and why do priests still wear them? Since ancient times, whenever priests celebrated Holy Communion they would put on a large poncho-like garment called a casula (chasuble) that covered their ordinary clothing. This vestment developed from the ordinary Roman attire of a farmer, who wore the large poncho to protect him from the elements. It eventually became associated with Christians in the 3rd century. As the fashion trends shifted the chasuble ceased to be an ordinary garment but was still used by priests. By the 8th century the chasuble was reserved for clergy members and began to be ornamented in a way that reflected its sacred function. At first the chasuble was large and bulky, and required the help of other attendants at the liturgy to gather the many folds to better facilitate the movements of the priest. Over time it was cut down in shape, most extreme in the case of the “fiddleback” style chasuble during the last few centuries. The symbolism of the chasuble can be found expressed in the traditional prayer that a priest prays before putting it on. O Lord, who has said, “My yoke is sweet and my burden light,” grant that I may so carry it as to merit Thy grace. The chasuble is seen as the “yoke of Christ” and reminds priests that they are “another Christ” in the celebration of Holy Communion and to “put on the new man, who accord- ing to God is created in justice and holiness of truth” (Ephesians 4:24). Additionally, the chasuble symbolizes the “seamless garment” worn by Christ when he was led to his crucifixion. This further accentuates the connection between the priest, the Eucharist, and the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. A common ornamentation of the chasu- ble is a large cross on the back or front of the vestment to further cement the symbolism. The color of this vestment is coordinated with the symbolic colour of the liturgical sea- son or feast. Although ornate and sometimes very grand looking, the chasuble is seen as a dressing down of the priest. A humbling. Very far away from “dressing up!” For these reasons, the Church holds on to this ancient garment, reminding the priest (and the people) that the Eucharist is not an ordinary event, but one that is sacred and like nothing else on the face of the earth. I write this as one or two people in our congregations have asked about the wearing of the chasuble at our Holy Communion services. I hope the above information is of some 15 help. David Mulrenan, Assistant Curate.
