The Serious Philosophy Behind Louis C.K.'S Comedy 2/16/2017 Why Louis C.K. Thinks Your Inevitable Death Is Hilarious | Big Think The Serious Philosophy behind Louis C.K.'s Comedy February 9, 2017 by SCOTTY HENDRICKS Louis C.K. arrives at the premiere party for FX's 'Wilfred' and 'Louie' on June 20, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Katy Winn/Getty Images) Remember a great comedian who made you both laugh and think? George Carlin perhaps? Richard Pryor? Or maybe Bill Hicks? Only the best comedians can do that, and when you manage to find one that can do both, it is a moment to always recall with a smile. If only there was someone today who’s comedy matched the philosophical edge of the old comedy gods. Allow us to suggest for you a new Clown Prince of Philosophy. http://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/louie-ck-the-philosopher-king-of-comedy-and-jokes-about-your-death 1/6 2/16/2017 Why Louis C.K. Thinks Your Inevitable Death Is Hilarious | Big Think The “Philosopher-King” of comedy is Louis C.K. You may know his work, but you might not realize there is some serious philosophy behindsome of the best jokes. On his hit television broadcast Louie, Louis C.K plays a slightly fictional version of himself, who is overweight, aging, depressive, bald, and divorced. Basicly he plays himself, but a more depressing version. In the show, despite meeting a series of hilariously absurd roadblocks to happiness, Louie basically enjoys life, despite it all, including his tendency to be a bit depressed. “Oh no, I know the darkness,” Louie says in one episode. At the same time, he demands that we understand how good life is. Replying to his daughter, who says she's "bored," Louie responds: http://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/louie-ck-the-philosopher-king-of-comedy-and-jokes-about-your-death 2/6 2/16/2017 Why Louis C.K. Thinks Your Inevitable Death Is Hilarious | Big Think “‘I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless; it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? The fact that you’re alive is amazing, so you don’t get to say ‘I’m bored.” http://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/louie-ck-the-philosopher-king-of-comedy-and-jokes-about-your-death 3/6 2/16/2017 Why Louis C.K. Thinks Your Inevitable Death Is Hilarious | Big Think Louis’ character, and to some extent the real man, are manifestations of what is often called “The Absurd Hero”, first described by Albert Camus. Who is this hero? The man who understands that life is absurd and meaningless, but who finds joy in it anyway. Louie, in encouraging us to laugh at such horrible topics as death, meaninglessness, and the problems of doing the right thing, is a kind of hero in this way. Death is, indeed, a favorite topic of his. Covered brilliantly in many of his best stand up routines. Louis’ system of stand up writing is perfectionistic, and only the best jokes which appeal to all of us make it to his standard line up; only to be removed after one year’s use. Since death comes for us all, this subject often makes the cut. http://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/louie-ck-the-philosopher-king-of-comedy-and-jokes-about-your-death 4/6 2/16/2017 Why Louis C.K. Thinks Your Inevitable Death Is Hilarious | Big Think As was explained by Martin Heidegger, death is the one thing we all move towards at all times. Louis, similarly, hardly goes a minute into a routine based around death before reminding the audience a few times about that fact. The subject of death was a major one for the existentialist philosophers, Nietzsche, Sartre, and Heidegger among them, who saw the end of life as the major problem in understanding it, and a focus of all of their work. http://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/louie-ck-the-philosopher-king-of-comedy-and-jokes-about-your-death 5/6 2/16/2017 Why Louis C.K. Thinks Your Inevitable Death Is Hilarious | Big Think Louis takes this and runs, showing us how death can be hysterically funny, especially when we know it is inevitable but try to avoid it or ignore it anyway. He points out the pointlessness of this attitude, and makes death as mundane an issue as playing hide and seek with a child. Not to belittle either event, but to show us that both are inevitable, relatable, and unintentionally hilarious. A great comedian can make you laugh until you cry. The best comedians can make you laugh until you think. As the above jokes show you, Louis is one of the best. In the course of giving us what Time magazine called “reflections on what it means to be human” he makes us laugh, forget our troubles for a bit, and then return to our lives better able to face the problems he just made fun of so well. -- http://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/louie-ck-the-philosopher-king-of-comedy-and-jokes-about-your-death 6/6.

PUBLIC COMMENTS HB 19 HOUSE COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY & CIVIL JURISPRUDENCE Hearing Date: March 9, 2021 10:00 AM Michael Gerke SELF Missouri City, TX This bill rewards bad actors. That is, companies who fail to train and properly hire drivers get to be dismissed from a case against them. This is a disincentive to do things the right way. And those companies who do hiring, training and safety the proper way, are placed at an economic disadvantage to those who do not. Bad bill. Texans lose on this one. Jason Boorstein Self Dallas, TX I became very concerned after reading the text of this bill. The bill aims to hurt individuals driving on our roads. I am concerned about commercial vehicles from Texas, other States and Countries getting a pass in Texas if they hurt or kill someone. I am concerned that if this bill passes, companies have less incentive to investigate bad drivers, self police their company, train and discipline. Please consider tabling this bill so that we can investigate the real ramification to Texans. Thank you. Guy Choate Webb, Stokes & Sparks, LLP San Angelo, TX I speak in opposition to this Bill. Texas highways would be made less safe by protecting the companies that put profits over safety as they put unsafe trucks and drivers on the road. Large trucks are disproportionately responsible for carnage on Texas highways. Trucking companies need more scrutiny, not less. Trucks do not have to be dangerous and truck drivers do not have to cause crashes. Good companies do not have the type of crashes that routinely plague Texas highways.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Doing It by Melvin Burgess Snowfall 's Damson Idris Teases the Season 4 Finale and a Tougher, OG Franklin Who's 'Stronger Every Week' Throughout Snowfall Season 4, a usually dominant Franklin Saint has been, well, less so. Never-ending conflicts with Skully and Manboy, as well as Franklin’s father Alton oversharing with an investigative reporter and Louie almost dying, left Franklin reeling. Throw in his chronic pain after being shot last season, protecting Leon at all costs and a less available Agent Teddy McDonald, aka Reed, and it seems like Franklin is perpetually a step or two behind. But Damson Idris, who stars as Franklin, says when the beloved crime drama unveils its Season 4 finale this Wednesday (FX, 10/9c), fans are going to see the man they used to know. In fact, if his disposal of Manboy and dismissal of Tanosse are any indication, this Franklin might be even icier. “Franklin gets stronger every week, and the turning point was Episode 8,” Idris sagely tells TVLine. That installment featured one of Franklin’s most explosive moments this season, which took place shortly after Irene’s interview with Alton went public. The scene also foreshadowed the take-charge Franklin that viewers will see in the season closer. Popular on TVLine. “That scene was special. It was written special,” Idris recalls. “The writers gave us a lot of monologues this season, and Dave Andron, our showrunner, made this one longer. But it wasn’t written the way it was performed. It was a lot more delicate.” “But I, personally as an actor, was frustrated that day,” the London native divulges.
