‘Mum’, ’Mummy’, ’Mother’ ‐ whatever name you use, your mother figure plays an important role in your life, always there when you need her, offering love and support. So why not celebrate your love for your mum or mother figure through poetry, because a mum can come in many forms. You could dedicate your poem to your stepmum, grandmother or female figure who has always been there for you. You could thank her for all the things she’s done or tell her why she is such a huge part of your life? What is it about her that is so special and makes her better than the rest? We will select our favourite poems for inclusion in a special anthology and one winner will win a luxury bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates to be sent to a person of their choice. Poems should be no longer than 30 lines and must be accompanied by an entry form. What is a Standard Variable Rate? (an SVR) If you have a mortgage (or a family member does), then do yourself (or them) a favour and read this. Here we explain probably the easiest way to save you possibly thousands of £ every year! Most mortgage lenders offer a variety of “fixed term” deals when you take a mortgage out and given that interest rates can fluctuate most people do opt for a fixed rate which then ensures their repayments will not change for at-least the initial “fixed term” period. Basically, this means their monthly repayment remain the same and you are free to budget without any worry that interest rates will rise (for the fixed term). The fixed term would typically be 2 years or so but they can be 5 or even 10 years depending on the client’s needs. The rub comes after the fixed term when you will automatically be dumped onto your lenders “Standard Variable Rate”. Having looked at the current “Standard Variable Rates” of Halifax, Nationwide, NatWest and Barclays for example, they are all 4.24% as this is written. Given the cheapest available mortgage right now is 0.99% or even a fixed rate at 1.39% being available, it does not take a rocket scientist to see the potential savings. For example, here are the calculations based on borrowing just £100,000: Annual interest charge using SVR of 4.24% = £4,240 per year in interest cost Annual interest rate charge using 0.99% = £999 per year in interest cost So, if this was a reflection of your situation (which is unlikely) by simply switching your lender you could save £3,241 per year! Wow! As always with finance, the devil is in the detail and this is where a trusted adviser comes into their own. We would encourage all our clients to obtain the best deal possible themselves and then give us a call. As with all things financial, we are completely independent and whole of market advisers, are very rarely beaten and prove time and time again the value for money we bring to our clients.
