“ The only vaccine available against AIDS right now is communicating, educating and talking about it, and talking about it now so that one day we’ll never have to talk about it any more.” Because your voice matters ! Nicolas Hieronimus, Worldwide President L’ORÉAL Professional Products

HAIRDRESSERS AGAINST AIDS, ACTORS FOR PREVENTION !

In 2001, after an official visit to South Africa in her role as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Lady Cristina Owen-Jones brought to the attention of the L’Oréal Group the impact that the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus was having on the local population. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization which numbers 191 member countries around the world, has issued an open invitation to firms to join forces with it in supporting prevention campaigns targeting the HIV/AIDS pandemic, alongside governments and NGOs. In 2005, L’Oréal and UNESCO signed a cooperation agreement to roll out a prevention campaign that would be supported by hairdressers all over the world. Since 2007, under the title “Hairdressers Against AIDS”, this preventive education programme has been a core element of the causes pursued by the L’Oréal Corporate Foundation, which is committed to supporting education, and has made its mark as a major strategic campaign. L’Oréal Professional Products has swung into action to roll out the programme on the ground, and every year its worldwide network of trainers provides training for thousands of hairdressing professionals on issues linked to HIV/AIDS. Together, L’Oréal Professional Products and its partner salons make a significant contribution to fighting the spread of the disease. The global prevention education campaign, unique of its kind, has already reached out to 1.3 million hairdressers in 26 countries, raising awareness and providing information by introducing HIV/AIDS prevention modules as part of their professional training courses. Once they have received training, the hairdressers go on to play a fundamental role, in their turn, in awareness raising and education. Hairdressers make up a large community, whose close personal links and ability to communicate with their clients are a highly effective way of passing on vital information for the prevention of HIV/AIDS. 2011 marks a special milestone – the tenth anniversary of the first steps in the Hairdressers Against Aids programme. It offers an opportunity to underscore our profession’s commitment to the cause, with the help of one of our partner stylists, John Nollet. John has generously contributed his talent in helping us to produce this calendar, styling and then capturing on film the twelve stunning, committed women, each famous in her chosen field, who volunteered their services to show their solidarity with our profession in the fight against HIV/AIDS. I would like to thank these outstanding women who have made a gift of their time and their beauty to pose for the lens of their friend, John Nollet. It is a fantastic encouragement for hairdressers the world over to join forces with us in their turn and play their part as committed, human and generous actors for prevention.

JOHN NOLLET, STYLIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER

John Nollet was born in 1970 in the north of . Starting out as stylist on a number of films, including La Cité des Enfants Perdus (City of Lost Children), Astérix Mission Cléopâtre, La Fille sur le Pont, 8 Femmes (), Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (Amélie from Montmartre), Dancer in the Dark, Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement), Ridicule, Combien tu m’aimes (How Much Do You Love Me?), Public Enemies, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nine, l’Arnacœur (Heartbreaker) etc. John was soon styling the stars he met on set for shoots with top photographers: Karl Lagerfeld, Peter Lindbergh, Ruven Afanador, Vincent Peters, Ellen von Unwerth, Jean Baptiste Mondino…. and for red carpet fashion and movie events. In 2002, he opened his first salon in Rue Montorgueil, in Paris. His eye for beauty made the move into photography a natural transition, and in 2004 he switched to the other side of the lens and started shooting actresses already accustomed to working with him as their stylist. Ever since, he has worked regularly for the top international fashion magazines. In 2006, he created the concept of Hair Room Service at the Cheval Blanc Hotel in Courchevel and the Hôtel Costes in Paris. 2009 saw him embark on a world tour to bring his Hair Room Service to elegant women across the globe. In 2010, he signed up for the fight against AIDS with UNESCO and the L’ORÉAL Corporate Foundation, under the patronage of UNESCO and the L’Oréal Corporate Foundation, dedicating several months to producing the 2011 Hairdressers Against AIDS Beauty Calendar.

CELEBRITIES GET INVOLVED

12 celebrities gave their services free of charge to support this campaign to prevent and combat AIDS, agreeing to be photographed by John Nollet for the “2011 Beauty Calendar – Hairdressers Against AIDS”. The result is a stunning series of black and white portraits in which beauty is reflected in simplicity. UNESCO, the L’Oréal Corporate Foundation and L’Oréal Professional Products would like to extend their sincere thanks to Lou Doillon, Cécile Cassel, Audrey Marnay, Doutzen Kroes, , Ludivine Sagnier, Monica Cruz, Vanessa Paradis, Monica Bellucci, , Amandine Decroix and Debra Shaw for their generous contribution. This initiative will inspire and motivate our hairdressers all over the world to join the ranks of messengers and actors in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Each year on World AIDS Day (December 1st), many of our partner hairdressers turn their salon into a hub of information and dialogue on the issue of HIV/AIDS.

The impact of a global day of action adds emphasis to their initiative and takes it to a new level, heightened by the involvement of world-famous names and faces playing their part in ensuring that, one day, this virus will be a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, HIV/AIDS is still making the news 30 years after it was discovered…

The figures are there to prove it: - 33.4 million people are currently living with the HIV/AIDS virus, in the world. - Only 40% of people are aware of their HIV status - 2.7 million new victims a year become infected, half of them young people and children - 2 million people die of the disease every year

Every region of the world is affected: - Africa (22.4 million) - Asia (4.7 million), of which India accounts for half - Latin America (2 million) - Eastern Europe (1.5 million) - North America & Western Europe (2.3 million)

Use your voice. Use your power. For a beautiful world without AIDS!

12 months and 12 messages to share on preventing HIV/AIDS:

1. There are only three means of transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS: - Unprotected penetrative sex, - Blood to blood contact, particularly by means of hypodermic needles (sharing of needles by injecting drug users, accidental needlestick injuries suffered by healthcare professionals).. - Mother to child transmission during pregnancy, labour or breastfeeding. 2. Someone who is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is said to be HIV-positive. Only the advanced stage of HIV infection is referred to as AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. 3. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is not transmitted by mosquito or spider bites. 4. HIV can be transmitted from a HIV-positive mother to her child. The appropriate medical treatment can avoid the transmission of HIV. 5. An HIV screening test is the only way to find out if you are HIV-positive or not. 6. There is no risk of contracting HIV from touching, kissing, living or working with someone who is HIV-positive. 7. HIV is not transmitted via the tears, sweat, saliva or coughs and sneezes of someone who is HIV-positive. 8. HIV cannot be contracted from sharing a bed, toilets, shower or home with someone who is HIV-positive. 9. Using a condom to engage in protected sex protects against the risk of contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. 10. Treatments for HIV, known as antiretroviral treatments, prevent the virus from multiplying and reduce the onset of opportunistic diseases, thereby slowing the progression towards full-blown AIDS. 11. Knowing you are HIV-positive means you can benefit from the best treatment at the appropriate time. 12. It is important not to be alone when you are HIV-positive. Groups exist to provide information and support. It is also important to attend regular check-ups by HIV/AIDS healthcare specialists.
