Sarah Lewis Mitchem Abstract In section fifteen of the poem The Walls Do Not Fall author Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) address her audience and articulates the purpose of the poet in the following lines: “we are the keepers of the secret,/ the carriers, the spinners/ of the rare intangible thread/ that binds all humanity/ to ancient wisdom,/ to antiquity;/…every concrete object/ has abstract value, is timeless/ in the dream parallel” (Trilogy 24). H.D. mined her own life for charged relationships which she then, through writing, connected to the mythic characters of antiquity whose tales embodied the same struggles she faced. Reading concrete objects as universal symbols which transcend time, her mind meshed the 20th century with previous cultures to create a nexus where the questions embedded in the human spirit are alive on multiple planes. The purpose of this research project is not to define her works as “successful” or “unsuccessful,” nor to weigh the works against each other in terms of “advancement.” Rather it is to describe the way she manipulates this most reliable of tools, mythic metamorphosis, in works stretching from her early Imagist poetry, through her long poem Trilogy, and finally into her last memoir End To Torment, taking note of the way she uses this tool to form beauty from harsh circumstances and help heal her shattered psyche. -

The available sources do not mention cesarean section on a living mother to save the infant. On the other side, writings on embryotomy state clearly that Greek and Roman physicians strove hard to save women’s lives. Written in ancient, male-centered societies, these texts convey an unequivocal positive attitude towards women, despite cur- rent misogynist assessments by philosophers and physicians who considered women inferior, based on their organic and biological features. The Greek Origin of Caduceum: Æsculapius

RILLO, DR EN H* SUMMARY Introduction: Medicine history gives us the chance to reflect about the Caduceus as the synthesis of the dialectic of the sensible and spiritual life. This opens and horizon of comprehension and allow us to recover the legend of Asclepius and it’s cult with the different symbolic elements that structure it. The legend: The historic and mythological references about Asclepius’ existence gives structure to the legend in a real and not-real environment perduring in the occidental medicine tradition as a mystical reference to the deity for the medical practice. The cult: It’s based in the incubation and synthesizes healing rites and therapeutical practices, as medical as surgical; exercise, sleep cures and amusement activities. The symbol: The linguistic origin of Asclepius’ name, the symbolism of the legend protagonists and the iconographic representation of their attributes, converge in the Caduceus to represent the medical practices and ideas synthesis, all them related to the human life. Conclusion: Asclepius’ perception transcends the Olympic divinity and situates him as the healing archetype; that’s why Caduceus is consistent with the system-world representation that rules the actual medical practice. Published by: The Department of Historical Studies, University of Toronto Mississauga Stable URL: http://jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/prandium/article/view/25694 2 The Religion in Medicine: an exploration of healing through the examination of Asclepius and the Epidaurian Iamata By Ongelle‐Lise Burnett1 For many Ancient Greeks, Asclepius was the god usually sought after to assist in the recovery process.2 As the evidence presented in the Epidaurian inscriptions indicate, patients praised Asclepius because he not only answered their prayer requests in a timely manner, but also cured their diseases, typically, in one nightly visit.3 His healing‐cult, dedicated to “curative and protective powers,” created a different, yet acceptable, form of worship that spread from existing shrines in Tricca, Epidaurus, Athens and the Piraeus to the Aegan, Asia Minor and Egypt.4 This paper will use examples from the Asclepieion sanctuary at Epidaurus, which welcomed patients from different parts of ancient Greece. This sanctuary was special because patients participated in an incubation practice where dreaming allowed the god(s) to heal and give advice on further courses of action.5 Thus, at Epidaurus, a patient found counsel and prophecies through a different form of healing: nightly dream‐filled visions.6 This paper explores the belief of the people in Asclepius, through the examination of the iamata (the erected physical testimonies of healings) and the events at Epidaurus. -

Epione: Lightweight Contact Tracing with Strong Privacy Ni Trieu∗ Kareem Shehatay Prateek Saxenaz Reza Shokriz Dawn Song§{ Abstract Contact tracing is an essential tool in containing infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Many countries and research groups have launched or announced mobile apps to facilitate contact tracing by recording contacts between users with some privacy considerations. Most of the focus has been on using random tokens, which are exchanged during encounters and stored locally on users’ phones. Prior systems allow users to search over released tokens in order to learn if they have recently been in the proximity of a user that has since been diagnosed with the disease. However, prior approaches do not provide end-to-end privacy in the collection and querying of tokens. In particular, these approaches are vulnerable to either linkage attacks by users using token metadata, linkage attacks by the server, or false reporting by users. In this work, we introduce Epione, a lightweight system for contact tracing with strong privacy protections. Epione alerts users directly if any of their contacts have been diagnosed with the disease, while protecting the privacy of users’ contacts from both central services and other users, and provides protection against false reporting. As a key building block, we present a new cryptographic tool for secure two-party private set intersection cardinality (PSI-CA), which allows two parties, each holding a set of items, to learn the intersection size of two private sets without revealing intersection items. We specifically tailor it to the case of large-scale contact tracing where clients have small input sets and the server’s database of tokens is much larger. -
