Inauguration of Poison Detection Centre on November 18, 2013 Poison Detection Centre/ Poison Information Centre is a specialized unit providing information on prevention, early diagnosis & treatment of poisoning. Poison Detection Centre was established on November 18th 2013 under the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, B.L.D.E.U Shri. B. M. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research centre, Bijapur. The Centre provides Toxicological information and advice on management of poisoned patients adopted to the level of enquirer. The Centre intends to train medical & paramedical professionals and plans to increase public awareness by providing information booklets, management cards.

11 BRIEF CASE REPORT:

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IN TIME SAVED THE LIMB OF A CHILD - Dept.of Paediatrics. 9 year old child had developed painful hip on right side. Child was treated at private hospital at Bagalkot. Investigations showed high WBC cell count, High ESR(>100mm/hr),High Platelet count (7,00,000/cumm)-All indicators of significant infection. X-Ray of hip region on careful observations showed slight destruction of hip joint bone. Mantoux test ( a simple bedside injection test for evidence of Tuberculosis) showed strong positive result. X-Ray of chest showed evidence of primary tuberculosis infection of lung. The child was diagnosed to be having tuberculosis of hip joint,and was started on DOTs anti tubercular treatment under RNTCP.There was drastic improvement in the hip joint pain.within one week child was able to walk without any pain or difficulty.Child was discharged with reference to RNTCP DOTS centre near his village for completion of six month antitubercular treatment regularly. An alert,inquisitive mind,appropriate investigations,correct interpretation of the reports, and prompt appropriate treatment saved child from what generally would lead to permanent damage to hip joint,and lifelong major disability. 20 The Annual Cultural festival “ADVAIT-13” was celebrated from 24th to 26th October 2013. Annual Day was held on October 26, 2013. Chief Guest of the function was Dr. Satish S. Jigjini, Former VC, BLDE University, Prof. B. G. Mulimani, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. J. G. Ambekar, Registrar, Dr. M. S. Biradar, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, Dr. Shivakumar Hiremath, Medical Superintendent were guests of honour. Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha, Vice Principal presided over the function. Programme began with invocation song by Ms. Priyanka. Welcome speech was delivered by Mr. C. Mahesh, Student Secretary. Chief Guest was introduced by Ms. Prathyusha, Student Secretary. Dr. Lata M. Mullur, Vice Chairperson of Cultural Committee read the details of events conducted and announced the winners of various competitions. Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guest. Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. U. C. Nucchi. Miss. Kavya Shivapuram was the Master of Ceremony. Programme continued with cultural activities by students and staff members.

The Second Global Alumni Meet was organized on 5/10/13 at Auditorium. A total of 350 Alumni from India and abroad participated in the meet. Shri. Shivayogi C. Kalsad, I.A.S. Commissioner, Rehabilitation and Re-settlement, Upper Krishna project, Bagalkot was the Chief Guest and opined that quality of education of the college is best assessed by the placement of alumni. Shri M. B. Patil, President, BLDE University and Hon’ble Minister for Water Resources, presided the function and announced contribution of One lakh rupees from Association for the best outgoing student award. Prof. B. G. Mulimani, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. J. G. Ambekar, Registrar and Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha, Vice Principal were guests of honour. The Alumni Association donated One lakh rupees to college to constitute Gold Medal, for the Best outgoing student award from Jan 2013-14 academic year. Dr. M. S. Biradar, President of Alumni Association and Principal welcomed the gathering. Dr. A. P. Ambali, Secretary, briefed about activities of Alumni Association. Dr. R. N. Karadi, Vice President, conveyed vote of thanks.

My name is Shaik Hussain Saheb, Ph.D. Scholar in Department of Anatomy, BLDEU `S Shri B.M. Patil Medical College & Research Centre. I like the university because BLDE University is characterized by diversity and a high degree of commitment of faculty. I chose BLDE University because of its practical relevance. Our professors at BLDE University are also our personal mentors, moulding us in every aspect into becoming excellent researchers. BLDE University provides students with endless opportunities with skills and knowledge. In our Pre- Ph.D. course work, University conducted Research methodology and Biostatistics classes which were very helpful in our research. The syllabus and course structure were nice, especially biostatistics practical classes helped me a lot and I can do now myself statistical analysis of my research work. The deep exposure of research methodology helped me to design new proposals of research. The same classes gave idea on how to write my thesis. The BLDE University administrative staffs are very friendly, informative and communicative. Guide is helpful & encouraging.
