THE CLASSIC JAZZ OUARTET Tonight'sfour artistsare notedamong other things lor theircollective erudition and verbal communicationwith theiraudience; this may appearto be an unusualopening for this page,but it simplyacknowledges the superfluityon the presentoccasion of the printed word. Ot coursethe mainevent is the music,performed on an unusualcombination of instrumentsby an unusualgroup ol individualswho haveadopted an unusualname. (Their originalname had an unparalleleduniqueness better divulged by its creators.)The term "classic" appropriatelyimplies an enduringquality of excellencethat we can applyto their artistryas much as to theirchosen idiom. Dick Sudhalteris a Bostonnative (b. 1938)and Oberlingraduate who had a fascianting careeras a toreigncorrespondent for UnitedPress International before turning completely to music,covering such ilemsas the invasionof Czechoslovakia.His perlormingcontacts range trom Pee-WbeRussell to Dexter Gordon. A long-term critic for the New York Post, JazzJournal, etc., he bringsa specialperspective to classicjazz, having co-authored the definitive biography of one of its seminal ligurcs, Bix: Man and Legend: academicstake note. (b. 1928)has two musicdegrees from Columbia,a considerablecareer in the annotationand salesaspects of the recordingindustry, and a lifetimeof performingwith mostot the centralfigures of traditionaljazz, especially the EddieCondon circle and a long stintwith .His mostp.oud and preciousassociation, however, was his four yearsas the lastregular clarinetist with LouisArmstrong. MartyGrosz (b. Berlin,Germany, 1930) vigorously protesses to be the lastof the totally acousticguitarists (look out, FreddieGreen!). The son of the provocativeand influential painterGeorge Grosz, his processoi Americanizationlound him recordingas earlyas 1950 (with Dick Wbllstood,no less).He has playedwith just abouteveryone, having recentty completeda Europeantour with YankLawson and Bob Haggart.
