CASEY SCORPIONS CASEY Scorpions occupy the same position on the quarters won ladder as they do on the premiership ladder. Only Geelong sits above them. The Scorpions have built their strong season on getting out of the gate fast and maintaining that scoreboard pressure. And, Casey has done that consistently as evidenced by the fact that its record in quarters won over the fi rst three quarters is identical – 10-4. No other club is as good in winning opening quarters, not even Geelong, as the Scorpions, who’ve got better as the season has progressed at gaining the ascendancy in the fi rst quarter. Casey is 6-1 in fi rst quarters won since Round 8. The Scorpions have pushed home that advantage in the second. After Rd 12, Casey owned a 9-2 record in second terms and as it is, its 10-4 second quarter record rates equal fi rst with, yes, you’ve guessed it, Geelong. Casey’s third quarter – 10-4 – performance is the second best behind Geelong and after Round 11 it was 9-1 in winning third quarters, but they’ve dropped three of the past four third quarters. The Scorpions’ Achilles is its inability to close out games. They own a losing 6-8 record, which places them equal ninth on the four quarter ladder.

COBURG COBURG season-long struggles can be peeled back to its inability to consistently win quarters. They don’t own one quarter where they’ve recorded a win with its best quarters – the fi rst and third boasting a modest 5-9 return. Only Bendigo owns a worst record than Coburg overall Photo: Dave Savell 17-38-1. It converts that outstanding quarter into a 7-6-1 record in the last term, a seventh place performance. As a result Collingwood has given itself every chance to return to the fi nals this season. Its 30-24-2 record places it seventh on the overall quarters won ladder. Collingwood’s worst quarter is its fi rst where it owns a 6-7- 1 record, which places them 10th in the fi rst quarter ladder. After winning three of its fi rst four opening quarters, Collingwood has slumped to 3-6-1 in its past 10 games. And, there was a period between Round 4 and Round 10, where its best effort was to register a drawn quarter.

While other clubs may take its foot off the accelerator with the game in control in the last quarter, Geelong goes for the jugular. It is 10-4 in the last quarter, a competition equal leading position with Port Melbourne and Williamstown. Sandringham will vouch how spectacularly dominant the Cats were in its Round 15 clash. Not only did Geelong keep Sandringham scoreless, but they kicked 10.6.

NORTH BALLARAT North Ballarat’s performance quarter by quarter mirrors pretty much where they sit on the premiership ladder. If nothing else, the Roosters are consistent across all quarters. It owns a 30-26 record, which places them equal eighth on the overall quarters won ladder. During its resurgence after its Round 9 bye, the Roosters have cranked it up to own a 15-8-1 record in its six games up to and including Round 15.
