National pride swells, and old rivalries are renewed (with the aggression hopefully limited to the pitch). Countries like England, Italy, and Mexico take a pause from being world leaders and become the Three Lions, Gli Azzurri, and El Tri (respectively) for four weeks. Fans relive memories of head-butts and Hand(s) of God, and tell tales of bygone heroes with names like Pele, Eusebio, Beckenbauer, and Cruyff. It wouldn’t come as any surprise to find that fans around the world might be posting pictures of flags or even the World Cup logo to social media in their fervor. But fans doing so may soon find themselves in the crosshairs of soccer’s governing body, and dealing with the repercussions of trademark infringement. FIFA has asked Twitter to send takedown notices to over 100 users who have used the logo of the 2014 World Cup as their profile’s avatar image. -
Examining Rhythmic and Metric Practices in Led Zeppelin's Musical
Popular Music (2008) Volume 27/1. Copyright © 2008 Cambridge University Press, pp. 53–76 doi:10.1017/S0261143008001487 Printed in the United Kingdom Examining rhythmic and metric practices in Led Zeppelin’s musical style JOHN BRACKETT University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City, UT 84112-0030, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this essay, I examine how aspects of rhythm and metre play a fundamental role in shaping and defining Led Zeppelin’s musical style. At the same time, I will show how Led Zeppelin was able to modify, manipulate, and develop pre-existing musical models and forms through various rhythmic and metric strategies. Comparative analyses will be used in an effort to show how Led Zeppelin’s flexible conception of rhythm and metre enabled the band to put their own stylistic ‘stamp’ on (i) specific musical genres (‘The Crunge’ and the song’s relation to James Brown-style funk), (ii) their riff constructions (‘Black Dog’ in relation to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Oh Well’), and (iii) their cover versions (‘Dazed and Confused’). Drawing upon my analytical points, I re-visit the complex issues that persist regarding the possibility that Led Zeppelin even has an ‘original’ or ‘unique’ style given their often overt reliance upon earlier musical models and forms. Therefore, in my conclusion, I argue that the development of any artist or group’s individual style necessarily involves the ability to assimilate and transform pre-existing musical features – features such as rhythm and metre – in novel ways and where issues relating to musical style intersect with influence. -
Led Zeppelin's
Led Zeppelin’s ‘Dazed and Confused’: From lament to psychedelic tour de force Stephen Loy Introduction Recorded during September and October 1968, and released on the band’s self-titled debut album in January 1969, Led Zeppelin’s ‘Dazed and Confused’ is the most significant example of the group’s approach to the translation of studio recordings into vehicles for improvisation and experimentation in a live performance context.1 One of the songs that guitarist Jimmy Page introduced to the other members of the band at their first meeting in London in 1968, ‘Dazed and Confused’ was to remain an integral part of Led Zeppelin’s concert set lists until 1975, being performed at almost all of their concerts during this period. In her book In the Houses of the Holy: Led Zeppelin and the power of rock music, Susan Fast describes ‘Dazed and Confused’ as ‘arguably the most important locus for musical experimentation’ throughout the majority of Led Zeppelin’s career.2 Building on Fast’s assertion regarding ‘Dazed and Confused’—that the original recorded version constituted a ‘blues lament’, which in performance developed into an extended exploration of psychedelic3 and avant-garde experimentation4— this paper will explore the interconnected relationship between those characteristics that make the work a lament and their contribution to the work’s capacity to sustain lengthy periods of improvisation. It will be argued that the ability of the song to support the extended guitar experimentation that became a feature of its concert performance stemmed from the dramatic potential of the original studio version—a drama that derived in many ways from its original conception as a lament. -

Song of the Day Xcv
SONG OF THE DAY XCV When it comes to EPIC Led Zeppelin songs, what good would it be if we didn‟t have a little bit of controversy? Today‟s song – as well as the next two – all have controversy hanging over them, but as I have stated prior, the versions of this - and the following two songs - are just so good and so superior to their original incarnations that you cannot deny the fact that Zeppelin brought so much more to these tunes than anyone, even the original writers/performers, could possibly do. So with that said, let‟s jump into our version of the Doc Brown DeLorean and go back in time to “Led Zeppelin” – the first album – and a track clocking in at 6:26, the closing track on side one, the labyrinth of Page and his guitar explorations, “Dazed & Confused.” By now, everyone should know the story of Jake Holmes and his album “The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes.” Jake had a song on that album titled “Dazed And Confused” and in 1967 he opened a show for The Yardbirds, who were so impressed with the song that they decided to work up their own version, calling it “I‟m Confused” and employing a lengthy Page violin bow solo section. One The Yardbirds broke up, Jimmy introduced this to Plant/Jones/Bonham and rewrote the lyrics {or Robert did, but as he was under contract to a different company at the time, he couldn‟t be “credited” as writing any songs on “Zep I”} and changed the melody just enough but did restore the original title to “Dazed & Confused.” So… now that we have all of that out of the way, let‟s dive into this song and cover the plethora of reasons why it is such an EPIC Led Zeppelin song.
