STUDENT SHOWCASE: ONE-ROOM SCHOOL IN KENYA

Cochrane High School Student Presenters: Chelsea Luft Teachers: Gale Coté, Lisa Gordon-Reece

Project Description Through an organization called “Me to We,” students from Cochrane High School are working to raise over $10,000 to build a one-room school in rural Kenya. The organizing committee, made up of grades 11 and 12 students, will be engaging the entire school in various fundraising activities throughout the school year.

The students have taken on this project to ensure every kid, even those living halfway across the world, has the same access to education as we do. The project is considered to be a graduate legacy through leadership for the class of 2018.

STUDENT SHOWCASE: ONE WAY THERE, NO WAY BACK

Muriel Clayton Middle School Student Presenter: Eva Dooks, Emily Mounsey, Josh Erickson, Luka Bowkett, Bryce Anderson Teacher: Nick Stabler

Project Description A grade five class from Muriel Clayton Middle School created a 100-page novel entitled, One Way There, No Way Back. The story is about a Syrian refugee who makes his way to Canada with the help of a Canadian soldier and eventually finds his family. The students worked as a class on all elements of the book, including coming up with the concept, developing the plot, and writing and revising the text. They learned the fundamentals of book publishing and hand-stitched their own unique copies. The school received local media recognition and received letters from teachers, as far as New York, who were interested in the project.

Colette Winter, Director of Facilities Planning, joined the meeting at 10:38 a.m.
