Theological Reflections by Paul Chutikorn - Director of Faith Formation

“Happiness from the Beatitudes: Blessed are the Peacemakers”

This beatitude is always interesting to discuss because peace is one of those things that is so frequently misunderstood, and there are so many aspects to consider when speaking about peace in general. Thus far, I have shown how all of the beatitudes deal primarily with bringing about a true peace in our lives by avoiding attachment to things that are not of God. This peace that I have been speaking of can be understood as an interior peace with oneself. This peace is always a prerequisite for any expectation of a real contribution to an exterior peace. In other words, without that peace with God, we cannot truly become peacemakers with regard to our neighbor. Thomas Merton summed this concept up nicely when he said, “We are not at peace with each other because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we are not at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God.” This is so true, and it flows from the philosophical principle that “one cannot give that which one does not have.” That is, you cannot give peace unless you are at peace yourself, and you cannot be at peace with yourself unless you are right with God (as the beatitudes have shown so far).

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” If we are to become peacemakers, we have to be in constant dialogue with God and allow for His love to radiate from us so that we are able to share this with our neighbor and recognize their needs as human persons made in the image and likeness of God. A recognition of this intrinsic dignity is key because one cannot be a true peacemaker unless he defends and promotes all human life as valuable. We tend to think of the opposite of peace as war, and this is with right reason. But we have to be careful to immediately shut out any and all talk of war since, at times, war could be essential to peace. This may be a striking statement to some, but if we are to achieve peace, we must also be intolerant to attacks on life. A more spiritual example is that if we want to achieve the true peace of Christ within us, we have to wage war against sin. If we simply become comfortable with the presence of sin, we will continuously experience chaos. Instead, we must preserve goodness, and in order to do that, we must preserve justice. Likewise, there are real evil powers at play in the world and we have to always remain vigilant and stand up for objective truth and goodness so that true peace can some into effect.

The whole point I am trying to make today is that peace is not equivalent to pacifism. It consists in waging war against evil and being soldiers of Christ on this battlefield we call the world. The real peacemakers are the true sons of God. As always, in order to truly be happy, we must be imitators of Christ. What does this entail? Love, compassion, fortitude, and even intolerance of evil and injustice. This last part, however, is only truly carried out when we do it in charity. Remember that true peace comes from Christ as its source, so it is not something the world can give. It comes through a constant cooperation with God. The world considers peace as being able to take full advantage of the worldly pleasures through greed, pride, and lust. But Christ’s peace is directly opposed to these things. Therefore, as we have seen with the previous beatitudes, we must combat greed, pride, and lust, with their polar opposites of poverty, humility, and chastity. Only then can we be the peacemakers that God created us to be.
