- 2 - PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MICK COLEMAN

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors debate discussing how many premier academy to Silver Leys today, particularly to the players, players each club should be able to field. But, before coaches, officials and supporters of Loughborough we become too ‘holier than thou’, we, along with for today’s 1st XV match. I must also welcome Mark most other clubs in the league, have also fielded Prisk, our local M.P. Mark has given the club his academy players (Saracens), and we will have some valuable support over the past few years and no available to us again this season. It’s obviously just doubt we will tap him up again at some time in the a question of getting the balance right with the future – and of course, we’ll all vote for him! Also, numbers, and in our case, encouraging and trusting good to see James and Ryan Palmer from Palmer our own young players, which I’m pleased to say, and Martin here as man of the match sponsors, and Andy Long continues to do. Next week we travel away to our very good friends Unfortunately for Loughborough, they currently at Chinnor, who have got themselves off to a flyer sit bottom of the league. Unfortunately for this year. Whilst most of us will be travelling on four Stortford we are only two positions above them! wheels, 39 members and friends will be on two Loughborough have yet to win a game, whilst wheels, biking the 67 miles to raise funds in aid of Stortford have notched up just the one victory so our very own Jimmy Rea’s daughter, Aurora. Sadly, Aurora is unable to walk or talk at this time, Although we huffed and puffed a lot in the second and this magnificent effort is to help raise significant period, we couldn’t blow a hole in their defence funds to enable Aurora to have specialist treatment (although we should have done!) and eventually lost abroad. Finally, it is with great sadness that I have to report In last year’s fixtures, Stortford were comfortable the tragic and untimely death of one of our mini winners at home, but in the away fixture, the coach rugby coaches. Lee Scott was a valued and vibrant driver must have taken a wrong turn, for it seemed member of our Under 10’s, and his passing will have that we ended up playing Leicester! Unsurprisingly left a big hole in the hearts of all those who knew we lost the match and Loughborough enjoyed a him. Our condolences go to all Lee’s family and great run of results, clambering out of the relegation friends, especially his wife Candy, and their children zone at the death, which then sparked a great Evie and Jules.

BMW_2017_Q2_PressAd_BSRFCProgramme_Stansted.indd 1 20/04/2017 11:33 DIRECTOR OF RUGBY ANDY LONG

Rugby can be a funny game and sometimes you maybe don’t get the rewards your effort deserves.

The squad have been working really hard and our single victory in my opinion doesn’t reflect the quality of our performances.

We have created a huge amount of opportunities in defeat, which has been frustrating, and something we’ve all been focusing on.

The league is so open this season with interesting results being thrown up each week. As a group we remain extremely positive and realise there are such fine margins between success and failure, most importantly we learn, adapt and apply fast.

It’s been great to give new players their National One debuts this season and especially Piers and Connor who only last season were representing our colts side, this is a steep learning curve for them but one they and many others are embracing.

We know only too well how dangerous Loughborough can be, a young and dynamic side with plenty of pace and skill means we need to be at our best if we are going to get the result we want.

I hope you enjoy the game

With just three weeks to go until the first round of the Colts National Cup, preparations continue to go well. Last weekend saw the League campaigns get underway against Enfield Ignatians and London Welsh, with Stortford coming out on top in both games by a healthy margin. With several players vying for each position in the National Cup squad, including many with representative honours, the future looks bright.

Training on Thursday evenings will grow ever more challenging in the coming weeks as the Colts will regularly run out against the 1st XV and Blues to practice their defensive and attacking shapes. The top of their list of priorities. BSRFC A5 Whole college OM.indd 1 01/08/2018 16:21 TODAY’S OPPOSITION LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC

The history of Loughborough Students RFC actually predates the formation of the University when the students of what was then Loughborough College formed what is considered the original side in September 1919.

As you might expect for certainly one of, if not the pre-eminent sports university in the UK they have a rich & illustrious list of rugby alumni. Which includes at least 17 former British & Irish Lions & many more full internationals. Fran Cotton, Gerald Davies, John Dawes, Eric Miller, Ben Kay & Sir Clive Woodward have all worn their famous colours.

In 1976, the Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The eventually joined the RFU league structure in 1996 at the bottom of the league system. By the end of the 2006 /07 season they had reached Midlands 1 (Level 5) & in their first season were promoted to Level 4- National 3 North (now National 2 North).

In 2012 they were crowed champions of National 2 North securing promotion to National One. They finished a very creditable 7th in their first season at Level 3. In the subsequent five seasons they finished between 11th & 13th

Last season whilst we defeated them here in December 43-12, the students exacted revenge in April when finishing victorious 32-14 in the return fixture.

Like ourselves they have had a ‘difficult’ start to this current campaign, losing their first four fixtures. The most recent of which was a 8-39 reversal at home to Cinderford.

Stortford rue missed opportunities, as they go down to defeat against an experienced Sale side.

Stortford got off to a quick start and were 5 tries by driving repeatedly up the middle through points ahead within 2 minutes, with the home side their powerful forwards, before switching the ball apparently caught cold. I started my rugby career from a very young age over at Hertford RFC playing all the way up to U14s, where I went on to have a few years at Bramley road playing for Saracens Amateurs, before getting heavily involved with the Saracens academy. Playing for the academy opened up a lot of avenues for myself which I am massively grateful for. They helped me gain a scholarship to Haileybury College, where I was also a Lawrence Dallaglio scholar. But more importantly, I wouldn’t be playing for Stortford today if it wasn’t for Sarries.

I have to admit it was a tricky start for myself at Stortford, with previously coming from Hertford and being too young to play my favoured position “prop”, however the guys gave me a warm welcome which helped settle the nerves. My Blues debut was against Hertford at Hertford which was more than interesting to say the least. My first season with Stortford was stellar as the Blues went on to win the Presidents cup at Allianz Park (Blues don’t lose). When I eventually turned 18, Longy gave me the opportunity to experience 1st team rugby. It was over at Barnes in National 2 in what could only be described as the loosest game I’ve ever played in. It was a massive eye opener for myself, showing me how the adult game is another level to what I expected it to be with the physicality and detail being worlds away from what I had previously experienced.

That year Stortford went on to win the win National 2 in some style and I was left with the tricky decision whether to stay with Stortford or move into the Loughborough Uni Nat 1 set up. I chose to move but very quickly found myself wanting to be back in the blue and white which I now call home. I feel playing at Stortford is the reason I have been so lucky to go on two England Counties U20s tours and fingers crossed what I’ve learnt here may take me further in the future.

It’s here I want to thank the support of Longy, my sponsor Virtus Property Management, all the players and staff and all you faithful supporters. I know it’s been a rough start to the season, however the performances we have put out definitely excite me for what is to come. O Stort are we!

Smiles for Miles

Each season we nominate a Presidents charity with the aim of collecting a bit of cash for a charitable cause within our local community, whilst enjoying ourselves in rugby. Over the last few years we’ve raised tens of thousands of pounds for organisations such as St Clare Hospice, Mencap’s Grove Cottage, Ellies fund & The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust. Looking beyond the club for a worthy cause allows us to have a positive influence on lives beyond Silver Leys and reinforces our claim to be a true community club.

That doesn’t though preclude us, from every now and then, practicing a little bit of self-help. Charity is sometimes allowed to begin at home.

So, when our sponsorship coordinator Julie North, along with her friend & fellow keen cyclist, Jo Hart from Mantle Business Centres, learnt of the medical challenges facing 4-year-old Aurora Rea, daughter of 1st XV Winger Jimmy and his wife Leeann, they resolved to galvanise our whole club into action in order to help.

Aurora suffers from Movement disorder which presents like Cerebral Palsy, as well as Global Development Delay. She has already had to endure several operations and every day is for her literally, a physical battle.

It was whilst recovering from a physical battle of their own in the shape of a long bike ride that Julie & Jo came up with the idea of organising a fundraising 67-mile bike ride to Chinnor rugby club to coincide with the National One fixture between our respective 1st XV’s on 6th October

Almost immediately it struck a chord with fellow club members to the extent that ‘Team Aurora’ has grown considerably to now consist of 39 riders & 7 support staff made up of players, ex-players, coaches, parents & sponsors.

Their chosen route will take them out through Hertford, Welwyn, & Harpenden. Past the entrance to Whipsnade Zoo, around Aylesbury & hopefully onwards in time for kick off to the rugby club just outside Thame.

They have been generously supported by donations from Hanbury Wealth, Pestell Estate Agents, Barons BMW, Palmer & Martin Hire, Bishop’s Construction, Greys of Ely & Kings Removals.

The team have set themselves a fundraising target of £10,000, money needed to send Aurora to the Neurological and Physical Abilitation (NAPA) centre in Boston USA where she will receive an intensive therapy programme designed specifically for Aurora’s unique needs.

Leeann has told us that NAPA is an extraordinary experience & one which she knows Aurora will embrace and benefit from immensely. Allowing her to realise her full potential.

We can’t all cycle but we can all support Team Aurora’s endeavour. So let’s come together as One Club to make the life of one of our own so much better. Please donate today, or go online on the teams JustGiving website www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Smiles4MilesTeamAurora
