"Reflecting on the great needof my poor people, and believing that this was the will of God for me, I decidedto follow the voice of God with dedicationand availability.. . in a Congregationwhich would becomethe living light..." Siste r Josaphata Ho rodashevska Co-foundressSisters Servants of Mary Immaculate

Just10 years after the founding of the SistersServants of Mary funmaculate, its Co-foundressand frst memberof the Community,Sister Josaphata Horodashevska, missioned 4 Sistersfrom WesternUkraine (Halychyna) to Canada.Their mandatewas to minister to the needsof the immigrantswho wereexperiencing the harsh realities of pioneerlife in a foreign land. On November1, 1902,Sisters Ambrosia lrnkewich, Taida Wrublewsky,Isidore Shypowsky, and Emilia Klapowchuk arrivedin Edmontonwhere they were joyfully welcomedby their people.Filled with arduouszeal, the Sisterswere to be a beaconof spiritualhope to Ukrainianswho wereanxious to preservetheir religious and cultural heritage.

"You did not chooserne, but I choseyou and appointed. you thatyou shouldgo and bearfruit and thntyour fruit shouldabide; so that whateveryou askthe Father in my name,he maygive it to you." John:15

On July 7, 1903,the Sisters founded a conventon a homestead in theMundare district. Theybegan a fruitful andvaried ministrywhich included a school,an orphanage, and health care. With heartsfilled with Christianlove andcompassion, theycared for thesick, using herbal remedies and unsophisticatedhealing methods that they found effective.

It soonbecame increasingly apparent that Mundare was one of themost neglected rural areasin theprovision of medical services.During the Spanishinfluenza epidemic following World War I, the Sistersconverted their school into a temporaryhospital where they tirelessly ministered to thesick. Not onepatient who wasin theSisters' improvised hospital diedfrom this viciouspestilence. In fact, more than 300 lives weresaved because of the servicesrendered by theSisters.

In 1928,the idea flourished that the SistersServants of Mary Immaculateconstruct and operate a hospital. The approvalfor sucha facilitywas granted by ProvincialSuperior. Sister AthanasiaMelnyk andher council. Shortlythereafter, the blueprintswere prepared and a campaigncommittee was establishedto raise$20,000. People responded generously by contributingmoney or produce, and by supportingfundraising projectssuch as concerts and bazaars. Despite their noble efforts, only $1700was raised. The Sisters then obtained a loanfor $ 18000,and with monetarydonations from many benefactorsin Mundareand surrounding areas such as Lamont, Skaro,Andrew, and Myrnam, the dream was finally realizec. On September22, 1929,His ExcellencyBishop Ladyka OSBM officiatedat theblessing of thecornerstone of Canada'sfirst Ukrainianhospital, the Mundare General Hospital. The costof thecompleted structure, including furnishings and equipment, was$38,932. The hospitalwas truly a testamentof thesacrifice andhard work of thefirst pioneers- thepastors, Sisters, and laity.

The official openingof MundareGeneral Hospital was held on May 29, 1930. A long-awaiteddream had been fulfilled.

SisterGertrude Lesiuk was appointed the first Administrator, andSister Macrina Schab was the Director of Nursing. Throughtheir tirelessefforts, they set up anaccredited hospital accordingto the specirlcationsof theAlberta government and theAmerican Hospital Association. This wastruly a remarkableaccomplishment.

TheSisters at theGeneral Hospital provided compassionate care, epitomizing the deeds performed by Christthe Healer. Thefirst patient,Mr. JohnFranchuk, was admitted on December20,1929. Mr. O. Filevichwas the first patientto undergosurgery which was performed by Dr. N.C. Strilchuk, assistedby Dr. J. Yakimischak,in February1930. On January 31, 1930,the first baby,Mary Shelast, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Fedoruk, was bom in this newrural facility.

Both patientsand Sisters rejoiced when the first liturgy was celebratedby FatherKamenecky, OSBM in May 1930.

Duringthe Depression years, the hospital struggled to survive, andoften its successseemed a futile goal. Sincemoney was a scarcecommodity, hospital bills wereoften paid in produce,if at all. In spiteof all thedifficulties, the health care ministry managedto flourishunder the expertise and dedication of the Sistersand Dr. Strilchuk.

The bestportion of a good man's life His little nameless unrememberedacts Of kindnessand of love. William Wordsworth

Doctor N.C. Strilchuk anived in Mundare in 1926,and set up a medicalpractice that would spanclose to 50 yearsof dedicated life-healing service. He administeredto the sick from his office, the hospital,or in their homes. He faced formidable situationssuch as bitter winter stormsand virtuallv impassable roadswith courage, hope, and determination. Doctor Strilchuk unselfishlygave of himself, both to his communityand his work, with kindness, compassion, humor, and humility. He lived the words: "... comefollow Me andI will makevou a healerof men."

In June1936, the hospitalwas transformed into a scenicsetting whenseveral dedicated volunteers began the work of landscapingthe grounds.Other volunteers assisted in a multitudeof taskssuch as planting a bountifulgarden, painting, canningvegetables, and making pillows. JohnLapicki, a recentimmigrant from WestemUkaine, securedemployment asa maintenanceman at the hospitaland embarked on a labor of love with his expertisein variousareas, ranging from plumbingto gardening.

The Sistersalone continued to providetotal care to thepatients, ministeringto theirphysical, emotional, and spiritual needs. In 1940,the first lay nurse,Miss CatherineMcKele, was hired; hersalary was $45 a month.

In the 1950's.Mr. NestorChmilar hand-carved a beautiful altar for thehospital chapel. It wasconsecrated according to Eastem-Ritetradition and is still usedtodav.

To commemoratethe Hundredth Anniversarv of Our Ladvof Lourdes,a gloriousstatue of Our Lady wasiurchased to enhancethe beauty of thehospital grounds.

In 1960,an AdvisoryBoard was formed under the chairmanshipof Mr. William llkiw. Its pu{posewas to assistin hospitalmanagement. In July 1962,the By-laws of lncorporationof MundareGeneral Hospitalwere enacted, and the name was changed to Mary ImmaculateHospital of Mundare.

In April 1971the Mundare Hospital Auxiliary wasformed underthe direction of Mrs. VeraSiracky.

On September13, 1978,the community again rejoiced at the sod-turningceremonies for a new30-bed complex that would replacethe timewom and inadequate facilities. His Excellency BishopNeil SavarynOSBM officiated at theblessing of the newsite.

The official openingof thenew hospital was held on November18,1979. It wasa 30-bedcomplex with bothactive andextended care facilities. Mary Immaculatealso provided diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitative, and emergency services. In recentyears, the hospital has witnessed many changes in the servicesthat it provides.

In 1994,Regional Health Authorities were established under theRegional Health Authorities Act. Mary Immaculate Hospitalwas incorporated into theLakeland Regional Health Authority, offering 23 conrinuingcare beds. In 1999,the numberof bedsincreased to 28 continuingcare beds and 2 respiteor palliativecare beds.

TheAlberta govemment's most recent restructurins of its healthregions resulted in Mary ImmaculateHospitlal becoming partof theEast Central Health Regional Health Authority in April 2003. It continuesto operate28 continuingcare beds and 2 respiteor palliativecare beds. Sinceits inceptionin 1929,Mary ImmaculateHospital has lived up to its missionstatement of beinga UkrainianCatholic rural facility, committedto thehealing mission of Jesus.Sister EugeniaStefaniuk SSMI andher staff continue to provide compassionatecare and services for theirresidents, many of whomare long-time residents of Mundareand surrounding districts.Auxilians and volunteers bringjoy andsolace to the patientsby devotingtime to themindividually, as well as engagingin groupactivities, hospital functions, and fund- raisingactivities The advisoryBoard continues to assistin the managementof thehospital.

May Godbestow His abundantgraces of healthand happiness uponall thosewho havebeen associated with Mary ImmaculateHospital and those who continueto work for His glory. May He granteternal rest and memory to thosewho havedeoarted to EternalLife.

MIH 75thAnniversary June 6,2004

"This is tlrc Day the Lord Has Made, Let us Rejoice and be Glad therein," Todaymarks a milestonein thejourney in thelife of theMary ImmaculateHospital of Mundare. It is 75 yea$ since4 Sisters Servantsof Mary Immaculateleft thecomforts of a known countryUkraine, and ventured across the ocean to a foreign country,Canada. They were sent by their foundressSister JosaphataHordashevska on a newrnission to be a beaconof light for our Ukrainianpeople. This wasa newchallenge for the sisters;it waslike steppingfrom light to darkness, not knowingwhat lay aheadof them. They wentin faith, knowing thatGod would be presentto themat all timbs.

Arriving in Mundare,Nov.1902 they began weaving the tapestryof their life journey, light beganto fill theirdays and in spiteof theirhardships and difficulties, they were filled with peace. The reward of theirsacrifice was to seethe smiles, the joy andhappiness on thefaces of thepeople with whomthey worked, prayed, played and broke bread together.

Todaywe look to thepast for strengthand encouragement. Our heartsare filled with gratitudeand thanksgiving for the solidfoundation that was laid downfor usby our pioneer Sisters,Fathers and the people. The foundationwas based on thelove of God,a stfongfaith, and in workingtogether in harmony, sharing, helping and supporting one another.

Althoughtimes were difficult, progress was made. The first hospitalwas built in 1929,and the second hospital was built in 1979.

With time changetakes place, and we too mustsubmit to changein this fast-changingworld.
