District Profile

Shivpuri district ranks fourteenth in terms of total population in the state and fifteenth in regard to decadal population growth rate (2001-11) among the fifty districts. With a sex ratio of 877, it ranks forty-sixth in the state. comprises of nine tahsils, namely, , , , , Pichhore, Pohri, Bairad, Shivpuri and . As per Census 2011, the district has 1417 villages and 7 towns distributed in five Legislative assembly constituencies. Census 2011 figures indicated that the percentage share of scheduled caste population to total population was 18.6 percent while that of scheduled tribes was 13.2 percent. A substantial population of 46.39 percent of the district lies below the poverty line; where BPL percentage is 47.77 percent in rural Shivpuri and in the urban areas this figure is registered as 37.87 percent as per 2004-05 estimates.
