Signs of Kalyug 107 Hypocrisy of Swadhyay Swadhyay Parivar, inspired by Late Pandurang Shastri Athavale, has always claimed to the movement that has revived the Vedic Culture and restored human dignity. Unfortunately, their words and actions do not match at all. I am giving few examples of the hypocrisy of Swadhyay. Of course, I won’t comment on the obvious one of Gadi Pratha, the very concept that he ridiculed and did a 180 degree flip and established gadi pratha in swadhyay. It is claimed that the concepts of Bhav Feri, Bhakti Feri, Impersonal Wealth etc are inspired by our Vedic culture. However, when we study our scriptures, we find no such mention of activities even remotely close to that. Our sages and their ashrams relied on government grants and donations. Our sages did not stay in one place for too long and spent long time away from public glare to achieve spiritual wisdom and strength. Mr. Shastri constantly remained in public eye. The concept of Bhav Feri etc can be found in the early tradition of Mormon churches. They also have a similar concept of Impersonal wealth. In our culture, no sages had regular Pravachans at one place. The idea of Sunday Kendra is similar to Christian tradition of Sunday sermons. Dada has always claimed to be proud of being an Indian. However his actions are very contradictory to this claim. Dada and Swadhyay Page 2 of 108 always bragged about the recognition received abroad and yet never really promoted the awards given by India. Dada was awared Padma Vibhushan by Indian government. The second highest national honor and yet we hear about Templeton award, Magsaysay award or affinity of Pope towards Swadhyay and Didi. Dada received medical care in US. Why? Did dada not have faith in the doctors of India? With financial resources of Swadhyay, dada could have gone to the best hospitals in India. Yet, the choice was always abroad. During Christmas, Swadhyay organizes blood donation drive in US. Are these actions reciprocated by our Christian friends? Why not blood donation during Diwali or Gandhi Jayanti? Why doesn’t Swadhyay celebrate Independence day of India with as much gusto as it celebrates Dada’s birthday? Isn’t indian independence a land mark event in our history? Dada has repeatedly claimed in his lectures that Europeans made attempts to undermine the Indian culture and philosophy and yet Dada always looked to them for recognition. Dada repeated expressed his contempt for politicians yet every major Swadhyay function saw huge presence of political leaders. During 1986 tirthraj milan, there was a presence of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani. Mr. Narendra Modi is Didi’s rakhi brother. Dada claimed to live a simple and humble life but if you notice the lifestyle, that claim doesn’t hold true. Dada travelled by Concord. Dada, Didi and the gang stayed at expensive resorts. Look at the jewellary owned by Didi. Dada had a golf cart so he can meet the brothers and sisters of the Parivar. Why? The wealth belongs to God and yet it was utilized for the luxuries of Athavale family. These are just some of the examples. When will people wake up? When will they see the light of the day? Stop following false idols. Open your eyes and truth will be seen. Human Dignity & Swadhyay As explained by Mr. Pandurang Shastri Athavale, the key concept of Swadhyay is restoring human dignity. The quote used by Swadhyay Parivar is ”Rev. Dadaji, by means of a Swadhyayee outlook, philosophy, and a unique way of working, has enabled every last member of society to attain self-reverence, self-confidence, and self-respect and become transformed in the process. Just as important, he has enabled each human being to realize and appreciate Page 3 of 108 the dignity of his fellow human beings, their intrinsic self-worth, and human dignity in general.” Let us look at the statement and then the events that took place in Swadhyay in relation to that. Let us begin early on when members of the Parivar such as Haribhai Kothari and Prof S. K. Joshi were humiliated and thrown out of the Parivar. Why did the Mr. Athavale or Mrs. Talwalkar not respect their dignity? After the entire corruption scandal broke, a meeting of trusted Swadhyayees was called at the pathshala. In what they described as a “dark day” in history of pathshala, these senior members (now ex members) claimed that they were beaten and police had to be called to protect these members. How come Swadhyayees failed to protect their dignity? Mr. Athavale had said that he does not accept any donation or charity. Yet, he had no problems accepting million dollars from the Templeton award. When he received the money, he announced that this money will be spent for the benefit of Adivasis. As we all know, this did not happen. Dada failed to honor his own words. All over the words Swadhyayees proudly announce that we don’t take anything free. Not only lies are told to the members, these members are expected to propagate these lies. When they are questioned in public, these members get embarrassed. Is this really restoring anyone’s dignity? Didi, during a visit to the US, insulted the members of Swadhyay Parivar stating that throw your money in dirt, we don’t care for them. This was in response to the questions raised regarding financial irregularities in Swadhyay. Everyone works very hard to earn the wealth that they have. Statements such as these undermine people’s hard work, their faith and their generosity. Why wasn’t the concept of human dignity applied then? Mr. Vinoo Sanchania was viciously attacked. Mr. Pankaj Trivedi was brutally murdered. Other members were threatened with dire consequences if they ever dared to question the supreme leaders of Swadhyay. When members of the family are not treated like family, when their life and liberty are not respected, how is it that this human dignity is being restored? A member named RajivYouth on website equated the violence to Lord Ram killing Ravan and Vali. I do not know whether he is an ignorant Page 4 of 108 member or if this is an explanation given to him by the circle of Motabhais (Khotabhais). In either case, the message of human dignity has not really been understood by members. In a book titled “Darshan Mari Bari Ae Thi” published by Swadhyay, the author has attempted to compare Mr. Athavale to Mahatma Gandhi. I would like to share an incident to demonstrate the difference between the two. In the early 1920s, Indians, led by Mahatma Gandhi, were engaged in a nationwide revolt that later became known as the Non-cooperation Movement. On February 4, 1922, approximately two thousand protesters gathered to picket the liquor shop at the local market in Chauri Chaura. Armed police were dispatched to control the situation while the crowd marched toward the market and started shouting anti-government slogans. In an attempt to frighten and disperse the crowd, the police fired warning shots into the air but this only agitated the crowd who began pelting the police with stones. With the situation getting out of control, the sub inspector ordered the police to open fire on the advancing crowd, killing three and wounding several others. Infuriated, the crowd took revenge by setting the chowki ablaze, killing the 23 officers trapped inside. Appalled at the carnage, Gandhi went on a five-day fast as penance for what he perceived as his culpability in the bloodshed. In reflection, Gandhi felt that he had acted too hastily in encouraging people to revolt against the British Raj without sufficiently emphasizing the importance of ahimsa (non-violence) and without adequately training the people to exercise restraint in the face of attack.

A rather interesting, challenging book; something that at first one feared would be a bit of a tiresome, egocentric personal reflection but within a few paragraphs the author had expertly sold the idea to the reader. In several areas, Africa still accounts for less than its expected share of global activity. His family's efforts to rebuild their lives inspired him to drop out of school at 15 and start an IT business, buying and selling computer parts. Equally damaging is the silent exodus of its young professionals to the West in search of the 'better life'. This interview has been edited for clarity and length.
