ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN OFFICERS OF THE TOWN OF SPENCER MASSACHUSETTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 2019 IN MEMORIAM Robert B McPherson December 12, 1939 ~ October 7, 2019 Recipient of Spencer’s Leadership Hall Award in Recogniziton of his Exceptional Contributions, Guidance & Leadership to the Town of Spencer A BRIEF SKETCH OF SPENCER Rich in history, Spencer is located in central Worcester County, twenty minutes west of Worcester via Route 9, and about forty-five minutes from Springfield via Routes 49, 20, and the Massachusetts Turnpike. Largely residential, Spencer has been a supplier of workers for nearly every industry in the greater Worcester area. Ease of travel to all sections of the county makes Spencer a desirable area in which to live. Route 31 gives access in the north to Holden, Fitchburg, and Leominster; in the south to Charlton, Oxford, and Southbridge. Route 49 connects Route 9 with Route 20 which gives easy access to Sturbridge, Brimfield, Southbridge, the Mass. Turnpike, and Interstate 84 to Connecticut. Route 9 leads westerly through the Brookfields and Ware to the Amherst Campus of the University of Massachusetts, and easterly to Worcester, Shrewsbury, Northborough, and Westborough. BACKGROUND Settled in 1717 by Nathaniel Wood, Spencer was incorporated as a town in 1753, having been established as a district from a part of Leicester. Its name was assigned by Lieutenant Governor Spencer Phipps who signed the order establishing the district. In 1784 Spencer was a major stopping place on the Old Boston Post Road’s stage route between Boston and Hartford, and on to New York. -

APPENDIX THE AMERICAN BRIDGE COMPANY OF 1870 This Chicago company was one of the largest of its period, comparable in size to Keystone Bridge Company and Clarke, Reeves and Company, both of which started about the same time. Its contracts ranged from Texas, through the Midwest, to New England, where a two-level railroad and highway bridge was built at Fall River, Massachusetts. In addition to the usual structures the company built the Point Bridge at Pittsburgh, an 800-foot suspension bridge supported by trussed eyebars, and part of the Ninth Avenue El in New York City. It was organized in 1870 by Lucius B. Boomer with some of his former associates. Boomer had formed L.B. Boomer and Company in 1849 after coming to Chicago from Massachusetts. Two years later he was joined by his brother-in-law Andros B. Stone and they operated as Stone and Boomer. Stone's brother, Amasa Stone, Jr., was the brother-in-law of William Howe who had developed the widely used Howe truss, and both the Stones had built Howe's patented bridges in the Springfield, Massachusetts area as had Boomer. Stone and Boomer constructed the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi at Rock Island and built many others throughout the Midwest, some of them for Amasa Stone, Jr., who had moved to Cleveland and become a railroad contractor. After their shop was destroyed by fire in 1857, Stone moved to Cleveland, but Boomer stayed and operated the Boomer Bridge Works. American Bridge's general agent was L.C. Boyington who had worked on the Rock Island bridge and had been Boomer's partner for a brief period. -

A Guide to Related Archival Collections Outside of the DCR Archives Pertaining to the Metropolitan Parks System, the Metropolitan Water Works System, and the State Forests and Parks System Compiled by Sean M. Fisher, Archivist DCR Archives, Office of Cultural Resources, Bureau of Planning, Design and Resource Protection, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation April 8, 2009 (First Release) (June 9, 2015 Update) Introduction Approximately 21 years since the availability of the Internet and the associated World Wide Web to the general public (1994)1, DCR staff, including planners and park rangers and interpreters, DCR’s consultants, and the research public have the opportunity to be informed of and utilize archival records, reports, photographs and plans pertaining to the Metropolitan Parks System (MPS), the State Forests and Parks System (SFP), and the Metropolitan Water Works System (MWW) beyond what is available in the DCR Archives, DCR’s CCC Archives, the DCR Plans Archives, and in the collections of our predecessor agencies at the Massachusetts State Archives. Archivists representing all types and sizes of archival repositories, and librarians of local history collections are increasingly using the Internet to post information about their archival collections, ranging from a simple list of collection names to comprehensive archival finding aid guides that detail every folder in a collection. Increasingly, more and more archival repositories are posting digitally scanned images from their collections of historic photographs. Some repositories are also posting searchable digital facsimiles of documents, volumes and reports to the Internet Archive (http://archive.org/about/about.php). This level of access is transforming the ways in which we identify potential archival and historical records for research and use in our work.
