Food for Thought

Rainbows. A friend of mine wrote this reflection on rainbows, which in Ontario and Canada, and many other parts of the world is on our minds in the month of June. In the book of Genesis we read that God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’ The rainbow has been a sign of God’s covenant with humans since it was first written about 3,500 years ago. In contemporary times, the rainbow flag is a visible symbol advocating for the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people. So, what can be interpreted as conflict can be reinterpreted as a meeting point; God made no distinction when he first made the rainbow covenant, and so it should be when it comes to accepting, welcoming and loving all members of the St. Martin community, regardless of race, regardless of religion, and regardless of your sexuality. That reflects the love modeled for each one of us. That’s why, for Christians, the ultimate symbol of sacrifice, acceptance, and love is the Holy Cross. Jesus’ death on the cross was for all human beings, everywhere, always. It is the finale signature of that same covenant God began with a rainbow. It started with a rainbow and finished with a cross. Today, think about your personal covenant with God. Consider the last time you said, “Good morning, God, I’m here. I want to be the best person I can be. Guide me.” After all, a covenant, almost by definition goes both ways, and we should always work towards fulfilling our part of this deal that is crafted in love. Amen.

Athletic Awards 2021

Despite the absence of any sports throughout this school year, the St. Martin Coaching Staff still elected to proceed with a modified version of our Athletic Awards. Each year, six awards are given to graduating student-athletes that are based on their entire high school careers. We felt that we could still give out these awards by taking into account the 2 ⅔ years that our grade 12’s were able to participate in our Athletics program. This also gave us the opportunity to recognize coaches that are leaving the school, students who have been drafted or earned scholarships, and other notable achievements. A video outlining the various awards and achievements was released on Thursday, June 17th and can be viewed by using this link: http://bit.ly/athleticawards21

The 2021 Athletic Award winners are: Lionel Woodbridge Academic/Athletic Award: Jenna Taghikhani & Mark Popik Stan Golowacz Heart & Soul Award: Emmanuel Lawal Cheryl Pounder Health & Physical Education Award: Veronica Kozak Anthony Cavato Service Award: Chernor Jalloh Rick Sczelecki Leadership in Sport Award: Emily Foster Jackie Hendriks Catholic Spirit Award: Natalia De Marco

Thank you to the coaches who contributed to the Athletic Awards video and congratulations to all our graduating student-athletes...we wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Ecological Footprint Posters

Miss. Santos’ Grade 9 Geography class recently learned that an ecological footprint is the impact that your lifestyle has on the earth’s natural systems. After measuring their own footprints, it became clear that we are currently overshooting the Earth’s capacity to provide. To do their part, the students created posters to help inform and make others aware of actions they can take to reduce the size of their footprints. Here are some of the posters:
