Tucker, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Empire is not a supreme entity controlling high-level policies in metropolises: it is a reality translated into the daily lives of the subalterns at the periphery of the periphery of empire, as this microhistory of Qina province during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries argues. Qina is a small place deep in the south of Egypt, and this study looks at the lives of subaltern women and men in this province and then moves beyond southern Egypt to attempt to understand two centuries of imperialism and rebellion in world history. This period marked great transformations as the world moved from “traditional” to “modern” empire, or from “despotic” to allegedly “liberal” discourses and exercises of imperialism. In order to analyze modes of imperial hegemony and modes of subaltern revolt, this study examines four empires in Qina province: the Ottoman (1700s), Muhammad Ali’s (1811-1848), the informal British (1848 to 1882), and finally the formal British (1882-1920). This study argues that as the world progressed toward modern imperialism and its alleged modernity, Qina province endured irreversible peripheralization and marginalization, a fate that it might have shared with many other small places in the world. While the postcolonial critique of the “consequences of modernity” mostly iii focuses on metropolises overtly impacted by European imperialism or rural areas directly affected by capitalist disturbances, this study examines an utterly marginalized space, far away from the centers of events. It shows that the empire was there too, leaving a more profound impact and generating unique modes of resistance. This study adopts “the empire” as its main unit of analysis, rather than the nation state. It is an inquiry into the empire as the key to understanding the major shifts in modern history, and questions the ability of this unit to generate nuanced conclusions in studying the history of small, marginalized places in the world. In the fields bordering the town of Qus, one of the province’s agricultural and industrial centers, I noticed the glorious presence of an enormous silver, cylindrical building that looked alien to its surroundings. Inquiring about its contents, I learned that this was the storage silo for wheat granted by USAID. The controversial American food aid to Egypt, believed by many analysts to be a tool of imperial hegemony through establishing dependency, had made its way to the remotest places in the south. I also learned that the “informal empire” made an appearance in the province through many other ways.1 For instance, the program of economic reform that the Egyptian government has applied for many years, following the neoliberal Washington Consensus and its blueprint designed by the IMF and the World Bank, has deeply hurt the sugarcane cultivators in Qina. The former legal codes of landholding, promulgated by the Arab socialist regime, are now being reversed by a new code of private property, Law 96 of 1992. Peasants are being evicted from land that the state had returned to the pre-1952 elite families of the colonial era. On US aid in general and USAID’s wheat aid in particular and Egyptian dependency see: Galal Amin, Egypt’s Economic Predicament (Leiden: Brill, 1995). 1 owned sugar factory in Qus is awaiting its turn for privatization, which will entail the laying off of thousands of the province’s workers.2 As a matter of fact, the southern provinces of Egypt, including Qina, are known to be the most underdeveloped regions in the country’s modern history, as well as the most rebellious and disturbing to the central government. The UNDP’s annual reports on Arab human development show that Upper Egypt is located at the bottom of the ladder of human development, and several World Bank reports allude to the same fact.3 These reports come out while the neoliberal program of economic reform is being persistently applied in Egypt amidst profound opposition from those hurt by it. On the other hand, the gangs of bandits who take refuge in the mountains bordering the two sides of the Nile in Upper Egypt, matarid al-jabal, have come to symbolize ruthless crime as well as audacious resistance to the state. Many popular TV series and movies have presented a criminal, yet romantic, image of those bandits. They have even made their appearance recently on Facebook: an oppositional group of youth, resenting the authoritarian regime and its market reforms, named itself after an ever-resonating proclamation by a legendary southern bandit. The story of ‘Izzat ‘Ali Hanafi, whose execution filled the newspapers while I was conducting my archival research, was made into the most popular Egyptian movie of 2008, where he said: “From today, there is no government. They also began to request better recognition of their native language, in schools and within the religious community. They clashed with their superiors who, in the meantime, had signed an agreement with the Salesian government in Rome, committing them to developing the Italian language in their teaching institutes. The struggle became particularly fierce after the Holy See rebuked the Palestinian religious congregations for teaching the catechism and explaining the Sunday Gospel to people in a foreign language and urged them to do so in Arabic. The clash caused a serious dis- turbance within the Salesian community. Finally, after the First World War, the most turbulent Arab religious were removed from the Society of Don Bosco. All converged in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, where they continued forcefully (but in vain) to put forward their national demands. This article is based on several unpublished sources. We investigate the significance of this contrast by reviewing calcareous nannofossil stratigraphic studies performed on sections throughout Egypt. We show that a regional pattern occurs, and distinguish six areas—Nile Valley, Eastern Desert and western Sinai, Central and eastern Sinai, northern Egypt and Western Desert. Based on patterns related to thicknesses of selected lithobiostratigraphic intervals and distribution of main stratigraphic gaps, we propose that the differences in the stratigraphic architecture between these regions result from differential latest Paleocene and Early Eocene subsidence following intense Middle to Late Paleocene tectonic activity in the Syrian Arc folds as a result of the closure of the Neo-Tethys. ABSTRACT A study has been conducted using hydrochemistry and environmental isotopes (deuterium, oxygen-18 & carbon-14) on the Nubian Sandstone aquifer which underlies the Western desert oases. The concerned three oases (El-Farafra, El-Dakhla and El-Kharga) covers an area about 8000 km2 from the total area of the Western Desert. Seventy one water samples were collected from these three oases and subjected to both chemical and isotopic analysis to evaluate their groundwater resources. The hydrochemical data of these water samples reveals that thier salinity doesn't exceed 500 mg/I as well as the presence of marine and meteoric water types with different percentage. The mineralization of the investigated groundwater may be evoluated under flusing the original marine water entrapped between the pores of the aquifer matrix by meteoric water which is furthely modified through leaching, dissolution, cation exchange and oxidation-reduction processes. The investigated groundwater indicates some sort of quality hazards for drinking and domestic purposes due to the high concentration of both iron (agverage 6 mg/1) and hydrogen sulphide (average 2.5 nig/I ) relative to WHO standard. This water can be used safety for all kinds of livestocks.

Gage2 Abstract Background: Female genital mutilation (FGM) is still widespread in Egyptian society. It is strongly entrenched in local tradition and culture and has a strong link to the position of women. To eradicate the practice a major attitudinal change is a required for which an improvement in the social position of women is a prerequisite. This study examines the relationship between Egyptian women’s social positions and their attitudes towards FGM, and investigates whether the spread of anti-FGM attitudes is related to the observed improvements in the position of women over time. Methods: Changes in attitudes towards FGM are tracked using data from the Egypt Demographic and Health Surveys from 1995 to 2014. Multilevel logistic regressions are used to estimate 1) the effects of indicators of a woman’ssocial position on her attitude towards FGM, and 2) whether these effects change over time. Results: Literate, better educated and employed women are more likely to oppose FGM. Initially growing opposition to FGM was related to the expansion of women’s education, but lately opposition to FGM also seems to have spread to other segments of Egyptian society.

My name is Maheen Safian, and I am the future crisis chair for HUMUNC 2021! Currently, I'm a sophomore double-majoring in political science and global studies. In addition to being the vice president of Hofstra Model UN, I've been a strategy article writer for the Model UN training website allamericanmun.com for the past several years. Previously, I assisted in SPECPOL as a dais during HUMUNC 2020, and attended the Columbia College Model UN Conference during my first semester at Hofstra. My experience in MUN is extensive, ranging from my sophomore year of high school until now! Undeniably, it has made me grow incredibly as a student and leader. Harrell1 From Early Dynastic times onward, limestone was the construction material of choice for An- cient Egyptian temples, pyramids, and mastabas wherever limestone bedrock occurred, that is, along the Mediterranean coast, in the northern parts of the Western and Eastern Deserts, and in the Nile Valley between Cairo and Esna (fig. 1). Sandstone bedrock is present in the Nile Valley from Esna south into Sudan as well as in the adjacent deserts, and within this region it was the only building stone employed.2 Sandstone was also imported into the Nile Valley’s limestone region as far north as el-‘Sheikh Ibada and nearby el-‘Amarna, where it was used for New Kingdom tem- ples. There are sandstone temples further north in the Bahariya and Faiyum depressions, but these were built with local materials. The first large-scale use of sandstone occurred near Edfu in Upper Egypt, where it was employed for interior pavement and wall veneer in an Early Dynastic tomb at Hierakonpolis3 and also for a small 3rd Dynasty pyramid at Naga el-Goneima.4 Apart from this latter structure, the earliest use of sandstone in monumental architecture was for Middle Kingdom temples in the Abydos-Thebes region with the outstanding example the 11th Dynasty mortuary temple of Mentuhotep II (Nebhepetre) at Deir el-Bahri.
