Dear Class of 2019:

Please join us on October 24, 2016 for a tour of the Gatineau clerkship facilities. The purpose of this trip is to allow you to explore firsthand what a clerkship in Gatineau is like.

There is no charge for the bus, lunch or activities, but you must submit your confirmation of attendance by noon on October 17, 2016.

Below is the URL link you will need to reserve your spot on the bus, or to join us in Gatineau for the information day: https://www.mcgill.ca/ugme/visite-du-csss-de-gatineau-formulaire-dinscription

As a follow-up to the presentation by Dr. Brousseau, Assistant Dean, Medical Education – Region, last May 2016, I am pleased to say that the Gatineau clerkship has been successful since July 2010. Additional strengths of the integrated clerkship experience in Gatineau include:

 One-to-one teaching by faculty and residents;  “Blocks” are less rigid – e.g., primary care clinics are scheduled longitudinally throughout the year;  You will have the opportunity to follow your patients even if they develop a health problem outside the discipline in which you are rotating at the time;  An opportunity to practice medicine “en français;”  Current studies show that students in integrated clerkships do as well, or perhaps slightly better, on standardized exams than those in traditional “block” clerkships as well with clinical evaluation grades;  Since you will live in Gatineau for all of 3rd year, a housing stipend is provided for each period (4 weeks) you are scheduled in the region;  A stipend for travel to attend mandatory training in is provided;  The stipend you receive does not compromise your student loans;  You can choose to stay in Gatineau for all of your clinical rotations, some electives or none of 4th year;  Elective options available in all core disciplines, including subspecialties, e.g., Radiology, Surgical subspecialty, Trauma, Radiation Oncology, ER, Anesthesia, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Family Medicine and Public Health longitudinal elective;  To date, residency match outcomes have been very good.

Gatineau Visit Itinerary:

 Visit the Hull and Gatineau teaching sites,  Meet the faculty of the core disciplines as well as residents and students currently in the program.

Medical education and training at McGill includes teaching and clinical practicum opportunities at sites in the area and other sites in our affiliated teaching hospital network (http://www.mcgill.ca/medicine/health-care/teaching-hospital-network). Students may be assigned to a one-year integrated clerkship in Gatineau, and/or other rural locations.

There will be a minimum of 12 students to a maximum of 15 students assigned to the Gatineau Clerkship July 2017.

I encourage you to attend on October 24 if you are at all considering ranking for the Gatineau Clerkship in January 2017; it will be an interesting and valuable experience for you. The lectures scheduled on that day will be recorded.

Should you have any questions about the trip, please do not hesitate to contact Jessica Ward [email protected] or call 514-398-5666.

Note: You need to register to reserve your spot on the bus or join us in Gatineau for the information day.
