Many people wonder why and how these tragedies can happen. Many speculate, but what do we really know about these tragic incidents? Answers to these questions are urgently needed because they can inform prevention and response policies. -

Chainsaws and Neo-Nazis: Contemporary German Horror Film Production Randall Halle, Pittsburgh ISSN 1470 – 9570 Randall Halle 40 Chainsaws and Neo-Nazis: Contemporary German Horror Film Production Randall Halle, Pittsburgh Although horror film production has a long history in Germany, in German film studies discussions of the horror genre have focused almost exclusively on the silent era. For long decades production in the genre was almost solely the province of international co- productions done under low-budget conditions aimed at a mass audience. These circumstances made it an unlikely object of study for nationally oriented high cultural studies. This essay reviews this history of post-war horror films, arguing that German horror film production experienced a sudden significant shift at the time of unification and has continued on in newly invigorated forms that merit careful consideration. In the subcultural form of Wende Horror we find artefacts from the period of unification that open up discussion of social psychology. In the subsequent productions we discover mainstream transnational horror films that reflect the new conditions of film financing in the global era. The essay ends with six reflections oriented toward fostering the further study of German horror film. Horror films with their physical excitations, their gory effects, their special sub-cultural appeal, and their generic narratives, seem to offer little content for the serious student of German culture. Yet if we look back into the history of the horror genre we recognize at its origins a series of well-known, acclaimed images from Germany. Films like Der Student von Prag , Der Golem , Caligari , Nosferatu , or M belong on the lists of the achievements of world cinema. -

Ziel ist es zu klären, ob sich der deutsche Actionfilm als neues Genre in der deutschen Filmland- schaft integrieren kann. Sowie die Möglichkeit ihn am internationalen Markt zu etablie- ren. Dazu wurden die wichtigsten vorhandenen und fehlenden Voraussetzungen herausgearbeitet. Die Filmförderung ist mitentscheidend für die Genre-Vielfalt im Kino. Da die deutsche Filmwirtschaft finanziell von ihr abhängig ist. Durch die gegebenen Förderrichtlinien wird Actiongenre selten beachtet. Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, dass es für ein deutsches Actiongenre an finanziellen Mitteln fehlt. Sowie an internationalen Absatzmärkten, da diese durch den deutschen Binnenmarkt eingeschränkt sind. Des Weiteren besitzen noch zu wenige Filmschaffende Know-how, welches für das Actiongenre Action benö- tigt wird. The Censorship of German Video Games
THE CENSORSHIP OF GERMAN VIDEO GAMES: the effects of national sensitivity to violence on entertainment content by HANNAH MUELLER A THESIS Presented to the Department of Art, Digital Arts and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts June 2015 I am a digital art student with anti-censorship sensibilities and a passion for video games without restrictions; this is a bias that must be acknowledged. I have undertaken this research from the point of view as a visual artist who views video games as an art form of equivocal importance to more traditional fine art. In my experience the topic of German game censorship is predominantly discussed in scathing video game forum discussions with little factual reinforcement. My goal is to expand the discussion into an analytical, academic survey. While researching I lived in Tübingen, Germany for four months collecting interviews and immersing myself in the language and culture. This thesis includes a study of legal legislature, systematic censorship, and the German market through the lenses of interviews, impartial research, and case studies of specific game titles. The question will be answered: why Germany’s censorship of violent content in video games exists. Conjecture will then be taken about the effectiveness of the German system. I am not qualified to suggest an alternative video game rating system, but I can provide an assessment of the German system’s history, structure, and methodology to reach a conclusion about its effectiveness. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Professors Rick Silva, Louise Bishop, and Kate Mondloch for their support and adjudication on my thesis defense board. -

En effet, plu - sieurs boutiques de VPC ont fermé leurs portes. Pire, la relève se fait encore attendre ! Certes, la crise économique peut expliquer en partie les difficultés que les indépendants rencontrent au jour le jour, mais c’est aussi le contexte économique actuel qui n’aide pas à la pérennité d’une acti vité pleinement indépendante. La concurrence des grandes enseignes de l’Internet, les charges de plus en plus élevées sont autant de freins pour ceux qui désirent proposer une offre alternative . Malgré toutes ces difficultés, Sin’Art parvient malgré tout à tirer son épingle du jeu. Le nombre de personnes ayant fait appel au ser vice proposé par les bénévoles de Sin’Art db a augmenté et les relations que nous avons entretenues étaient franchement sereines. L’activité reste également excédentaire . Tout cela conforte notre idée que l’organisation que nous avons mise en place pour Sin’Art db est crédible. Cela ne signifie pas que tout est toujours parfait, mais globalement, dans l’ensemble, ça va ! Ainsi, nous avons pu nous atteler à d’autres tâches, comme la mise en place d’une charte de développement durable qui a mis nos neurones à rude épreuve.
