Up to that point, it was some of the most exciting baseball I remember being a part of. We had a group that gave everything to get to where we were. Bat- tling through slumps, failures and injuries to show what they were made of. I think that people in sports know how hard it is to find a group of guys with such passion. Nobody knows that better than Coach Dooley.” Where Are They Now: Gregerson currently resides on the north side of Chicago in Old Irving Park and was recently traded to the Oakland A’s after playing five seasons with the Padres. This past November, he got married to his wife, Lindsey, in the Florida Keys. .

Buster Olney's top 10 teams: Are the Astros and Dodgers still baseball's best? Buster Olney Postseason performances have outsize value in Major League Baseball, and this is why David Freese shares emotional space with Bob Gibson in St. Louis, why several generations of New Englanders can deftly imitate Carlton Fisk’s frantic wave of a baseball, and why Kirk Gibson is better known for a fist pump than for his lifetime average. The executives who run front offices should divorce themselves from that romanticism of October and November results, and instead be wedded to the large sample size, before those nights when Brad Peacock and Charlie Morton were the best pitchers in baseball. And for the sake of ranking the best teams, we should probably do that too, giving greater weight to what was accomplished April through September. With that in mind, here are the top 10 teams, based on the input of evaluators, with help from ESPN researchers Mark Simon, Paul Hembekides and Sarah Langs. It’s subject to change before the start of spring training, of course, with so many veteran free agents still unsigned. 1. Cleveland Indians It’s important to remember a couple things about the Indians: (1) When the regular season ended, before anybody knew that Corey Kluber would pitch hurt against the Yankees, Cleveland was regarded as the favorite to roll through the postseason, after compiling a 22-game win streak that stretched over the better part of a month. (2) Among all contending teams, the Indians again appear to have the easiest road into the playoffs because most of their division is rebuilding -- the Tigers, the White Sox and the Royals.

CHRISTIAN ARROYO • Parents divorced when he was 2. Father is a career Marine who now lives in Ohio. • Mom Kim Drummond worked in sales for a tech company and as a black-jack and poker dealer and server at Hard Rock casino. • He first picked up a bat at two years old. Considers himself a utility player, comfortable at short, second and third, and said Derek Jeter was his favorite player. Like Jeter, Arroyo is well spoken. • Loved Hernando High School and called himself a “math and science geek” who enjoyed AP calculus. He had a 4.4 GPA in high school and says he would have studied engineering in college if he had not signed a pro baseball con- tract. • In 2012, he represented the United States in the under-18 world champion- ships in Korea, was the tournament MVP and helped the U.S. win the gold with a .387 average. His performance landed him in the September 21, 2012, issue of Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd, a nice kickoff to his senior year of high school. • First-round pick out of high school in 2013 and hit .326 that summer in rookie ball. • Spent 2014 in Low-A Augusta, where he hit .203 in 31 games before sustaining a hyperextended thumb. “That was kind of a rude awakening to baseball,” Arroyo told Alex Pavlovic of CSN-Bay Area in spring 2015. “It’s something that helped me a lot. Getting hit with adversity early in your career is awesome. You’re no longer the best — you need to work.

This is the twenty-second year of the Annual in the book format. This year we’re looking at realignment, and all the conse- quences; more than half of the teams in our league have changed addresses. There are new rivalries and new configurations, and thus new story lines for our magazine. Our most senior manager brings us a great historical overview of our previous divi- sions and pennant races – how we came to our present arrangement. For our veteran managers, it’s a walk down memory lane; for our newer friends, it’s evidence of the depth and strength of our league. A brief apology: time and gaps in knowledge have forced us to skip over the playoff descriptions this year. There were two epic series that went seven games, both men- tioned in Year in Review articles: Melrose came within one key pitch of going to the World Series instead of Munich; and Maracaibo took Las Vegas in seven games before bowing to the Marauders.

  • Brantley Progressing, Awaiting Word on Position by Jordan Bastian MLB.Com @Mlbastian LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla
Brantley progressing, awaiting word on position By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Indians have told Michael Brantley to sit tight. When the team is clear on what position he will be playing next season, it will communicate that with him. In the meantime, Cleveland is searching for ways to fortify its roster and those decisions could cause a chain reaction for the defensive alignment. "Brant's open to whatever we would like him to do," Indians manager Terry Francona said on Monday at the Winter Meetings. "He just wants to know ahead of time so he can prepare. Again, I think we have to see where we're at as a team. It's nice to know that guys are willing, but I think right now, he's an outfielder." Brantley has been an outfielder for the past nine seasons with the Indians, but the Tribe's roster puzzle is complicated at the moment. In order to piece things together, there is a chance that Brantley may be considered for first base, especially if Cleveland strikes out on re-signing free- agent Carlos Santana or acquiring another player for that position. It might sound cliche, but there really are a lot of moving parts right now for the Indians. For now, Cleveland is focusing on some positive news with Brantley, who underwent surgery on his right ankle on Oct. 18. James Quinlan, the team's head athletic trainer, met with the veteran outfielder a couple weeks ago and the progress was encouraging, according to Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti.
