THANKS TO ALL OF OUR DONORS FOR YOU CONTINUED SUPPORT! 3 3. CENTRAL PA FRIENDS OF 2016 FALL CONCERT SERIES Our second Fall Concert at 3p.m. on October 9th features the critically acclaimed tenor player from New York City - Harry Allen. He will be bringing a quintet that features the wonderful rising star vocalist Hilary Gardner. An authentic master of the jazz saxophone tradition, Harry is right at home with the timeless music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Duke Ellington. His style of playing certainly recaptures the essence of the ultra cool sound and the easy, lyrical phrasing of Stan, Al and Zoot. This event will be hosted in a new venue for CPFJ - the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center. The Center was originally the Jewish Community Center of Harrisburg and has a 2nd floor ballroom that will serve as a classic backdrop for Harry’s traditional ensemble.

Gene Lees writes, "Stan Getz was once asked his idea of the perfect tenor saxophone soloist. His answer was, 'My technique, 's ideas, and Zoot's time.' The fulfillment of that ideal may well be embodied in Harry Allen." Swing Bros. recording artist Harry Allen has over thirty recordings to his name. Three of Harry's CDs have won Gold Disc Awards from Japan's Swing Journal Magazine, and his CD Tenors Anyone? won both the Gold Disc Award and the New Star Award. His recordings have made the top ten list for favorite new releases in Swing Journal Magazine's reader's poll and Jazz Journal International's critic's poll for 1997, and Eu Nao Quero Dancar (I Won't Dance), the third Gold Disc Award winner, was voted second for album of the year for 1998 by Swing Journal Magazine’s reader’s poll. The Harry Allen - Joe Cohn Quartet won the New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Jazz Combo Performance of 2006. Harry has performed at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide, frequently touring the United States, Europe and Asia. He has performed with Rosemary Clooney, Ray Brown, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Flip Phillips, Scott Hamilton, Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis, , , Jeff Hamilton, Terry Gibbs, and has recorded with Tony Bennett, Johnny Mandel, Ray Brown, Tommy Flanagan, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Kenny Barron, Dave McKenna, Dori Caymmi, and Al Foster, among others. Harry is featured on many of John Pizzarelli's recordings including the soundtrack and an on-screen cameo in the feature film The Out of Towners starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. He has also done a series of commercials for ESPN starring Robert Goulet. Harry was born in Washington D.C. in 1966, and was raised in Los Angeles, CA and Burrillville, RI. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music in 1988 from Rutgers University in New Jersey, and currently resides in New York City.

Acclaimed singer Hilary Gardner grew up in Wasilla, Alaska infatuated with New York City. Her stunning Anzic Records debut, The Great City, is part love letter, part lament to New York and the big dreams it represents. The Great City can be heard on radio stations across the country, and the album has garnered effusive praise from the jazz community, including DownBeat Magazine, which named Hilary "an artist to watch in 2015" and a Rising Star Female Vocalist. The estate chose Hilary to appear as the live, onstage singer in Tony-award winner Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away. Backed by a 19-piece big band, Hilary sang solos and duets with Frank Sinatra in a performance hailed by critics as “wonderful” (Huffington Post), “elegant” (USA Today), and “terrific” (New York Observer). Hilary performed with Jeff Goldblum and his band at the Café Carlyle, prompting New York Magazine to call hers "a voice worth seeking out." In the wake of her appearance with Goldblum, Michael Feinstein personally invited Hilary to be his featured guest on an episode of NPR's Song Travels with Michael Feinstein. Hilary was also a guest on Judy Carmichael’s SiriusXM program, Jazz Inspired. Hilary is a founding member of DUCHESS, a Boswell Sisters-inspired vocal trio with Anzic Records label-mates Amy Cervini and Melissa Stylianou. The group has performed at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, Saratoga Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Jerusalem Jazz Festival. DUCHESS has also enjoyed sold-out appearances at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Rubin Museum. Hilary performs as a leader throughout New York City and is a frequent soloist with symphonies throughout the United States.

Performing with Harry & Hilary are a very gifted group of NYC musicians: Rossano Sporteillo: an award-winning jazz pianist hailing from Vigevano, Italy. made his first trip to the United States in the 2003 and established his career in New York City.in 2007. Rossano has performed with many of the world’s finest jazz luminaries, such as Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Bob Wilber, Houston Person, , and Dick Hyman. He has toured the world as a band leader and has several successful solo piano recordings to his name. Joel Forbes: an accomplished master of the acoustic bass was born in 1956. He has held a place on the NY jazz scene for 40 years. With tours throughout the US, Europe, Japan and Australia Joel has achieved international recognition. Joel has played and/or recorded with... Buck Clayton, Jon Hendricks, Lou Donaldson, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, Charles Macpherson, Doc Cheatham, Dave Mckenna, Tommy Flannigan, Marion McPartland, Benny Golson, Bill Charlap, and many more. Kevin Kanner: drums - a native of Southern California, has already amassed a large number of jazz credits including recordings with Paul Anka, Bill Holman, The Bud Shank Big Band, Josh Nelson and Michael Buble. We close our 36th Concert Season at 3p.m. on November 27th with a true jazz legend - guitarist Pat Martino. Pat’s storied career has included recordings with Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Eric Kloss, Groove Holmes & Jack MacDuff and he has been at the forefront of the jazz guitar world since the mid-60’s. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in all music. We return to the beautiful brewery and distillery, Wyndridge Farm, just outside of York, PA, for this performance with Pat’s exciting Trio.

Pat began playing professionally in 1961. He has performed with a wide variety of artists including , Gene Ammons, Richard Groove Holmes, John Handy, Bobby Hutcherson, Chick Corea, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Stanley Clark, Eric Kloss, Trudy Pitts, Willis Jackson, Lloyd Price, Woody Herman, Chuck Israels, Charles Earland, Barry Miles and Joe Pesci. Since 1967, Pat has been touring as a leader. He has been a Recording Artist for Vanguard, Prestige, Warner Brothers, Muse, Columbia, King, Paddlewheel, Evidence, Sony, 32 Jazz, High Note, Milestone, Polydor, Concord, Fantasy, House of Blues, Mythos, Mainstream, Cobblestone, Atlantic and, most currently, Blue Note Records. Pat has given Guitar and Music Therapy Seminars, Clinics and Master Classes throughout the world, at locations including North Texas State University, G.I.T., Berklee College (Boston and Perugia, Italy), Duquesne University, and many others. Today, he lives in Philadelphia and is adjunct faculty at the University of the Arts. Renowned organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Carmen Intorre will accompany Pat’s performance.

When the anesthesia wore off, Pat Martino looked up hazily at his parents and his doctors. and tried to piece together any memory of his life. One of the greatest guitarists in jazz. Martino had suffered a severe brain aneurysm and underwent surgery after being told that his condition could be terminal. After his operations he could remember almost nothing. He barely recognized his parents. and had no memory of his guitar or his career. He remembers feeling as if he had been "dropped cold, empty, neutral, cleansed...naked." . In the following months. Martino made a remarkable recovery. Through intensive study of his own historic recordings, and with the help of computer technology, Pat managed to reverse his memory loss and return to form on his instrument. His past recordings eventually became "an old friend, a spiritual experience which remained beautiful and honest." This recovery fits in perfectly with Pat's illustrious personal history. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in music. He embodies thoughtful energy and soul. . Born Pat Azzara in Philadelphia in 1944, he was first exposed to jazz through his father, Carmen "Mickey" Azzara, who sang in local clubs and briefly studied guitar with Eddie Lang. He took Pat to all the city's hot-spots to hear and meet Wes Montgomery and other musical giants. "I have always admired my father and have wanted to impress him. As a result, it forced me to get serious with my creative powers." . He began playing guitar when he was twelve years old. and left school in tenth grade to devote himself to music. During Visits to his music teacher Dennis Sandole, Pat often ran into another gifted student, , who would treat the youngster to hot chocolate as they talked about music. . Besides first-hand encounters with `Trane and Montgomery, whose album Grooveyard had "an enormous influence" on Martino, he also cites , a Stan Getz associate, as an early inspiration. "He seemed to me, as a child. to understand everything about music," Pat recalls. . Martino became actively involved with the , early rock scene in Philadelphia, alongside stars like Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker and Bobby Darin. His first road gig was with jazz organist Charles Earland, a high school friend. His reputation soon spread among other jazz players, and he was recruited by bandleader Lloyd Price to play hits such as Stagger Lee on-stage with musicians like Slide Hampton and Red Holloway. . Martino moved to Harlem to immerse himself in the "soul jazz" played by Earland and others. Previously, he had "heard all of the white man's jazz. I never heard that other part of the culture," he remembers. The organ trio concept had a profound influence on Martino's rhythmic and harmonic approach. and he remained in the idiom as a sideman, gigging with Jack McDuff and Don Patterson. An icon before his eighteenth birthday, Pat was signed as a leader for Prestige Records when he was twenty. His seminal albums from this period include classics like Strings!, Desperado, El Hombre and Baiyina (The Clear Evidence), one of jazz's first successful ventures into psychedelia. . In 1976, Martino began experiencing the excruciating headaches which were eventually diagnosed as symptoms of his aneurysms. After his surgery and recovery, he resumed his career when he appeared in1987 in New York, a gig that was released on a CD with an appropriate name, The Return. He then took another hiatus when both of his parents became ill, and he didn't record again until 1994, when he recorded Interchange and then The Maker. . Today, Martino lives in Philadelphia again and continues to grow as a musician. As the New York Times recently noted, "Mr. Martino, at sixty, is back and he is plotting new musical directions, adding more layers to his myth." His experiments with guitar synthesizers, begun during his rehabilitation, are taking him in the direction of orchestral arrangements and they promise groundbreaking possibilities. Musicians flock to his door for lessons, and he offers not only the benefits of his musical knowledge, but also the philosophical insights of a man who has faced and overcome enormous obstacles. "The guitar is of no great importance to me," he muses. "The people it brings to me are what matter. They are what I'm extremely grateful for, because they are alive. The guitar is just an apparatus."

With over 30 Cds as a leader and over 50 as a sideman with other jazz greats, Pat has forged an incredible career and we are thrilled to have him perform in our Fall Series.

Co-presented with the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz Sponsors: Dr. William Anderson and Family in Memory of Dorothy Anderson Doors open at 5pm, Music 7pm, Admission $15 ADVANCE TICKETS: go to the River City Website - www.rivercityhbg.com https://www.eventbrite.com/e/moutin-factory-quintet-tickets-27955334157

In many respects, the Moutin Reunion Quartet is an out-of-the-ordinary jazz group. It has two leaders — twin brothers François Moutin on bass and Louis Moutin on drums, who together and separately have worked with a host of major jazz artists over the last 20 years.

Its sidemen, Jean-Michel Pilc - piano, Manu Codjia - guitar, and Christophe Monniot - saxophones, are band leaders in their own right with extensive discographies and recognition by critics and musician colleagues alike.

The Moutin Factory Quintet is uniquely positioned as a bridge between the United States and Europe, musically as well as geographically (François lives in New York, the other band members live in Paris). Simply stated the quintet is making some of the most striking music on today’s jazz scene.

Please join us for this rare Central PA performance at River City Blues Club!!

WE'RE HAVING A PARTY!

Since our Tribute to Ron Waters last December was such a hit, we have decided to do it again this year only this time it’s a fund raiser for the new Ron Waters Scholarship Fund. Mark your calendars for Tuesday , December 27 th at River City Blues Club at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 on our website or at the door. We will have a great house trio to lead the jam session and we invite area musicians and past members of our Youth Band to sit in for an evening of great music! We'll also have a 50/50 drawing and some other surprises. This evening will raise funds for our Ron Waters Scholarship Fund which helps to send promising young jazz musicians to college and to our CPFJ Jazz Camp. We have been presenting the cd's for sale at our concerts, but limited table space has prevented us from showing all of this collection at one time. The complete collection has now arrived at our expanded office space where it may all be examined and purchases made. Call for an appointment after June 1 (717-540-1010) to shop the entire collection. Pricing for the LP's will vary (these are mostly big bands and vocalists - some quite rare and in great shape). Most CD's are sold at $5.00 per disc. Come visit us and add some great music to your collection - thanks for your support! If you have any records or Cds in good condition that you would like to donate, please call us. Donations to C.P.F.J. are tax deductible.
