I lived there until I went off to college and then lived up and down the East Coast until I moved to Houston. Now I’m out here in California. Q: So when did you discover art? What’s your first memory of it? Huber: Well actually when I was young I used to draw a lot. I took art classes in the fifth or sixth grade after school and really loved it. I mean to be with art—I always thought that was a wonderful phrase of Gilbert & George’s, ‘to be with art is all we ask.’” How can one be fully with art? In other words, can art be experienced directly in a society that has produced so much discourse and built so many structures to guide the spectator? Gilbert & George’s answer is to consider art as a deity: “Oh Art where did you come from, who mothered such a strange being. For what kind of people are you: are you for the feeble-of-mind, are you for the poor-at-heart, art for those with no soul. Are you a branch of nature’s fantastic network or are you an invention of some ambitious man? Do you come from a long line of arts? For every artist is born in the usual way and we have never seen a young artist.

Supervisor: Brad Vice, Ph.D. The object of this undergraduate thesis is to map the development of sequential art, comics, in the form of respectable art form influencing contemporary other artistic areas. Modern comics were developed between the World Wars primarily in the United States of America and therefore became a typical part of American culture. The thesis is divided into three major parts. The first part called Sequential Art as a Medium discusses in brief the history of sequential art, which dates back to ancient world. The chapter continues with two sections analyzing the comic medium from the theoretical point of view. The second part inquires the origin of the comic book industry, its cultural environment, and consequently the birth of modern comic book.

    Adam Szymczyk Named New Recipient of the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement Houston, December 14, 2010 – Menil Director Josef Helfenstein has announced the fifth recipient of the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement: Adam Szymczyk, director and chief curator of Kunsthalle Basel. Established in 2001 in honor of Menil Founding Director Walter Hopps (1932-2005), the award recognizes curators in early to mid-career who have made significant contributions to the field of contemporary art. The Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement carries a stipend of $15,000. A distinguished panel of three arts professionals made the selection: Iwona Blazwick, director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London; Donna De Salvo, chief curator, the Whitney Museum of American Art and former senior curator at Tate Modern, London; and Hamza Walker, director of education and associate curator for the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (and the 2005 recipient of the Hopps Award). “In his dedication to the untested,” said the panelists in a joint statement, “Adam Szymczyk has provided a critical framework for a generation of artists and curators." Born in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland, in 1970, Szymczyk studied art history at the University of Warsaw. In 1997 he was among the co-founders of Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw, established with the aim of supporting artists and promoting contemporary art in Poland through exhibitions and publications. Approximately 40 artworks from the Museum’s exceptional collection of 20th-century art, along with a handful of loans, are brought together to pay tribute to the creative genius of Duchamp and demonstrate his resounding impact on a select group of artists born half a century later. The exhibition also presents materials from the archives of the Pasadena Art Museum (which later became the Norton Simon Museum) that pertain to two seminal exhibitions there—New Painting of Common Objects from 1962 and Marcel Duchamp Retrospective from 1963. The original Bottlerack was an unassisted readymade, meaning that it was not altered physically by the artist. The bottle rack was a functional object manufactured for the drying of glass bottles. Duchamp purchased it from a department store in Paris and brought the bottle rack into the art world to alter its meaning.

    Harold Stevenson Harold Moncreau Stevenson Jr. (March 11, 1929 – October 21, 2018) was an Harold Stevenson American painter known for his paintings of the male nude.[1] He was a friend, a mentor, and an associate of Andy Warhol, and appeared in the Warhol film, Heat Born March 11, 1929 (credited as "Harold Childe").[2] Idabel, Oklahoma, U.S. Died October 21, 2018 Biography (aged 89) Idabel, Oklahoma, U.S. [3] Stevenson was born in Idabel, Oklahoma in 1929 and attended the University Nationality American of Oklahoma before moving to New York City in 1949.[3] He moved to Paris in Known for Painting 1952 and exhibited at European galleries for the next 20 years. Movement Pop art Stevenson's most well-known works were painted in the 1960s, including his Patron(s) Peggy Guggenheim, most famous works, Eye of Lightning Billy and The New Adam. Eye of Lightning Iris Clert, Andy Warhol, Billy was exhibited at the Sidney Janis Gallery in 1962 as part of the "New Alexander Iolas Realists" exhibit, which included works by Warhol (including his 200 Campbell’s Soup Cans), Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Moskowitz, Robert Indiana, George Segal, Jim Dine, Peter Agostini, James Rosenquist, Wayne Thiebaud and Tom Wesselmann. The Eye of Lightning Billy was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in 2008.[2] In 1963, Stevenson's massive mural, The New Adam, was displayed at the Iris Clert Gallery in Paris. The mural is an 8-foot by 39-foot reclining nude man. The model was young actor Sal Mineo, and the painting was dedicated to Stevenson's lover at the time, Lord Timothy Willoughby de Eresby, the heir to the Earl of Ancaster.
