The North West Constituency of Greater Mumbai [comprising Bandra to Andheri] is having a bye-election on Saturday 19th November 2005 following the demise of its elected representative, late Mr. Sunil Dutt. There are 16 candidates in the fray. On analyzing their affidavits, we find that:- 6 are graduates including one who has an additional professional diploma in Advertising & Public Relations, 4 are SSCs and 2 below SSC, 4 have not declared their educational qualifications. 3 are senior citizens above 60 years, 3 in their 50s, 4 in their 40s, 5 in their 30s and the youngest is 27 years. 10 of the candidates are residents of the constituency. As far as Assets are concerned Priya Dutt leads with over 4.25 Crores, this does not include what she inherits from her father late Sunil Dutt as they have not yet been evaluated. Another crorepati in the constituency is Mr. Manjit Singh the RPI[A] candidate and President of the Bar Restaurants Association. One candidate has not declared any movable asset but owns a 1.5 hectar chawl. Priya Dutt leads in liability too with about 2.73 lakhs closely followed by Mr. Manjit Singh with 2.64 lakhs. Madhokar Sarpotdar does not have any liability though he has assets of 66 lakhs. One candidate has not declared any asset or liability. 4 of the candidates have declared their criminal records. Only 6 candidates have Permanent Account Numbers [PAN] with the Income Tax. In order that voters have an informed choice of candidates, Supreme Court has made it mandatory for all candidates to declare all their information in a sworn affidavit. In fulfillment of this, AGNI has prepared a single consolidated comparative statement of all candidates for the benefit of the voters. From this document voters can decide well in advance in their house who should get his/her valuable vote based on information given by candidates in their affidavits. Any further information required voter could contact AGNI on 2368 2697. For copies of this publication and other publications on impacts of tourism write to [email protected] Preface The last year and a half have seen widespread protests, even violent struggles across the nation against forced land acquisition for creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). SEZs are being created under the Special Economic Zone Act 2005, a model promoted with frenzy by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC) with the promise of creating jobs, ushering investment and heralding unprecedented economic growth in the country. Making the most of a central Act that empowered states to create such exclusive 'growth' zones, government have gone on a widespread drive of acquiring, leasing out and selling land to private and government developers. The central government's fast track approval of over 237 SEZ proposals has led to total land area acquired of approximately 134,000 hectares for 67 multi-product SEZs alone. Claims of the MoC that agricultural land has been left untouched and not a single farmer has been displaced by SEZs created thus far are far from the truth, as it is farmers groups that are leading protests around the country.
