Brian Langerhans2 and Martin Plath8 Abstract Background: Replicate population pairs that diverge in response to similar selective regimes allow for an investigation of (a) whether phenotypic traits diverge in a similar and predictable fashion, (b) whether there is gradual variation in phenotypic divergence reflecting variation in the strength of natural selection among populations, (c) whether the extent of this divergence is correlated between multiple character suites (i.e., concerted evolution), and (d) whether gradual variation in phenotypic divergence predicts the degree of reproductive isolation, pointing towards a role for adaptation as a driver of (ecological) speciation. Here, we use poeciliid fishes of the genera Gambusia and Poecilia that have repeatedly evolved extremophile lineages able to tolerate high and sustained levels of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to answer these questions. The list was constructed using the comprehensive IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (available in December 2008) and the well elaborated FISHBASE (available on the official website, in 2008) for taxonomy and accepted scientific names of the species. To these two important sources, many scientific papers and communications were added when recent and useful reports were found. However, there is a long way from the fish species list of this review to the world’s complete list of endangered and critically endangered fish species. In our list were not included subspecies, populations, varieties, or species having a debatable taxonomic status. The scope of this review was not to inventorize all the fishes included in these two categories, but to make possible drawing some general conclusions regarding most important possible causes of fish species extinction and to make suggestions concerning fish species conservation possibilities through aquaculture. Previous work has demonstrated in adult specimens that fish from these extreme habitats convergently evolved drastically increased head and offspring size, while cave fish are further characterized by reduced pigmentation and eye size. Here, we traced the development of these (and other) divergent traits in embryos of Poecilia mexicana from benign surface habitats (‘‘surface mollies’’) and a sulphidic cave (‘‘cave mollies’’), as well as in embryos of the sister taxon, Poecilia sulphuraria from a sulphidic surface spring (‘‘sulphur mollies’’). We asked at which points during development changes in the timing of the involved processes (i.e., heterochrony) would be detectible. Methods and Results: Data were extracted from digital photographs taken of representative embryos for each stage of development and each type of molly. Embryo mass decreased in convergent fashion, but we found patterns of embryonic fat content and ovum/embryo diameter to be divergent among all three types of mollies. The intensity of yellow colouration of the yolk (a proxy for carotenoid content) was significantly lower in cave mollies throughout development.

Río Grande, Coclé Province to the Río Bayano, Panama. Description: “Gilliis”, Poecilia gillii (Kner & Steindachner, 1863), a small algae- and detritus-feeding fish, inhabiting sixteen isolated, residual pools of a high- gradient, intermittent stream in Costa Rica following floods which severely re- duced the number of fish in the stream. Immediately after the floods, population sizes averaged 20% and pool surface areas 130% of their pre-flood values, periphyton production was relatively low and dissolved oxygen was relatively high. Physical Characteristics: Size / Weight / Age: Max length : 6.0 cm TL male/unsexed; 10.5 cm TL (female) Color Form: Sexual dimorphism: Spatial variation in environmental characteristics which control periphyton, detritus and oxygen availability may produce characteristic population densities in different pools. An increase in the proportion of males and a decrease in their size after the floods suggest social inhibition of sexual matura- tion during the late dry season. Male has a gonopodium , smaller but larger fins. Lifespan: Livebearing fish such as Mollies, Platys, and Swordtails, generally live less than 5 years. Behavior: In the past they have been exposed in many areas of the world to combat malaria. Like all of Molly's, they are very productive under favorable conditions and can easily be multiplied. Because of the constant bustle, one should keep groups of one male to three females together. Several males are kept together, developed the most dominant males, the most intense colors.

Freshwater fishes are studied because they strongly reflect historical and ecological changes in a region. The objective of this dissertation is to identify historic geological events and ecological factors that shaped the evolution of species in the subgenus Mollienesia (Poecilia, Mollienesia, Poeciilidae) within the geologically dynamic regions of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. I investigate the evolutionary relationships in 19 of the 25 species by conducting phylogenetic, species trees with molecular clock estimates, and ancestral area estimates analyses on a multi-locus dataset. The phylogenetic and species trees results support three main groups: Poeciia latipinna, P. sphenops, and P. mexicana species complexes. The molecular clock estimates are inconclusive and ancestral area estimates indicate the diversity originated from the Maya and Chortis blocks. These findings uncover allopatric and ecological speciation events in the three main regions. I also analyze a three- gene dataset of fine scale sampling in Mexico of the P. sphenops and P. mexicana species complexes under phylogenetic and haplotype network. The phylogenetic results show that Mexican species are a result of independent invasions from Middle America with subsequent diversification.
