The History of the Slovak-Hungarian “Little War” and Its Interpretations in National Histories István Janek Before tackling the events of the “Little War”, let us take a brief outlook on the study of it in Hungarian and Slovak historical literature. A great number of Slovak histori- ans have written on this issue producing many articles and conference publications in Slovakia. Here I would like to highlight the most important ones from four his- OPEN ACCESS torians: Ladislav Deák, František Cséfalvay, Zoltán Katreba and Ján Petrik. A lot has been written on the air warfare between the two armies as well: Juraj Rejninec and Ján Petrik from Slovakia and Iván Pataky, László Rozsos together with Gyula Sárhidai and Csaba B. Stenge from Hungary must be mentioned.1 A thorough study of the dip- lomatic aspect has been done only by István Janek in Hungary.2 Ján Petrik has worked at the local history level and he also published a short but detailed monograph on the Hungarian bombing of Spiška Nová Ves.3 Cséfalvay and Katreba are military histori- ans who work for the Slovak Institution of Military History. They focus on the mili- tary events and publish in various Slovakian historical periodicals.4 Cséfalvay has also shown the political connections of military events.5 It is the merit of the works 1 J. By Marcus Weisgerber rom the looks of things, this could be a military joint venture like no other. Eleven European nations— Fsome of them NATO members, others not—are teaming up with the US to create a new C-17-based strategic airlift fleet. In just a few weeks, the first of three C-17 airlifters will touch down at a new home in Hungary—Papa Air Base, roughly midway between Budapest and Vienna. The former Warsaw Pact fighter base will be home for the versatile cargo DOD photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael B. Lavender haulers and hundreds of airmen from across Europe and the United States. It will be the permanent station for those who will fly the C-17s on cargo missions around the world. Capabilities – In this regard, you may wish to consider future integrated capability development and the planning and delivery requirements to support a joint force approach in terms of new equipment, professional military education and training, maintenance and development of infrastructure, developments in military doctrine, and transformative concepts, including specialist capabilities, that prepare and support the Defence Forces for future operations. This proposal is in respect of the provision of effective air defence aircraft for our state. In this Centenary year of our independence as a nation it is embarrassing and shameful that we currently rely on a arrangement made by Dept. Defence, the Dept of Foreign Affairs and The Irish Aviation Authority with British Defence authorities to have the RAF provide air protection cover over this republic. To make matters worse this arrangement was entered into without any reference to the Defence Forces and without any input from them. I accept that the provision of modern fighter aircraft is a potentially expensive and technically challenging task. However here are some options which I am certain will address the current shortfall and resulting unsatisfactory state of affairs. 1. We can approach some of our EU colleague states with a view to purchasing surplus fighter aircraft from them. This will be time consuming and may not result in a satisfactory outcome, never the less we should consider this option. I won’t identify potential aircraft as I would be guessing at to what our EU neighbours/allies have in their surplus stocks. -

A Publication of the Silicon Mountain Macintosh User Group Colorado Springs Metro Area It’s Frustrating That Preview in Mojave Isn’t Better April ’19 by ADAM ENGST Volume 35 Issue 4 I haven’t done much with Take Control since we sold the business to Joe Kissell in 2017 (see “Take Contents Control Books Acquired by Joe Kissell,” 1 May 2017), but I recently found myself back in the saddle to update Take Control of Preview. Josh Centers and I co-wrote the book about the version of Preview SIG News 2 that shipped with macOS 10.11 El Capitan, back in July 2016, and while I have continued to rely on the Club News 3 app every day, not much seemed to change with Preview in 10.12 Sierra or 10.13 High Sierra. When Door Prize Winners 6 10.14 Mojave rolled around, however, its Continuity Camera and screenshot features directly impacted Preview, so I decided it was time to do a deep dive and see what else might have changed in Preview. Hungarian Gripens Have Arrived
VO Info 17 620:15542/06 PRESS RELEASE Nr E 2 21.3.2006 Hungarian Gripens have arrived Today the first five Hungarian Air Force Gripen aircraft arrived in Hungary The five (5) Gripen multi-role fighters, the latest C and D versions of the aircraft, are the first of fourteen (14) ordered by Hungary. The aircraft were flown by four pilots from the Hungarian Air Force and three from the Swedish Air Force. The flight, which departed from FMV´s facility outside Linköping, lasted for about two hours. - “The flight went very well. The Gripen aircraft was easy to handle and everything functioned perfectly”, - said Hungarian Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Gabor Toth after landing at the Kecskémet air base in Hungary, where the Gripens will be based. The remaining nine (9) Gripen aircraft will be delivered to Hungary progressively until December 2007. The Gripen aircraft will now undergo inspection by the Hungarian Ministry of Defence before they are formally handed over to the customer at a ceremony being held on 30 March 2006. The first groups of Hungarian pilots and technicians, who have been undergoing training in Sweden since January 2005, have completed their training and are back in Hungary. Hungary is the third nation, after Sweden and the Czech Republic, to operate the fourth generation Gripen fighter. Hungary will receive the latest C and D versions of the Gripen aircraft. These aircraft are the latest C and D versions of the Gripen aircraft and are equipped with full color cockpit displays, a retractable air-to-air refueling probe and are fully NATO-interoperable. -

Zoltán Orosz: HUNGARIAN AAR CONCEPT – WAY AHEAD ABSTRACT: Refuelling (AAR) capability is crucial to the Hungarian tactical fighter community, the HUNAF, the HDF and even to the entire Hungarian defence strategy. The article also describes the history of the development of this capability and also the challenges that we face to maintain AAR in the future. BY entering the JAS-39 Gripen tactical fighter aircraft into the Hungarian inventory we didn’t just simply purchase a new aircraft type but introduced a series of new capabilities that are part of the modern western war-fighting principals that NATO is counting and building on. Such capabilities are the Link 16 Tactical Data-link system, the Litening III targeting pod, the precision guided munitions systems, the Night Vision Goggle capability, the sophisticated Electronic Warfare System with the necessary intel and analytical background and the Air- to-Air Refuelling (AAR) capability. In modern warfare current technology provides several force multipliers to achieve more objectives/goals with fewer capabilities and smaller military force. One of those Force Mul- tipliers is the Air-to-Air Refuelling. That means because of the possibility to refuel our aircraft in flight we can keep them in the air for longer time, send them to farther targets and/or they can carry more ordnance to achieve greater effect on the enemy’s plans and capabilities. By understanding that “fuel is a weapon” we realized the importance of AAR. All those capabilities must be integrated in the HDF with effect on our training, operations and logistics systems and generating the necessity of harmonization of existing doctrines and the development of appropriate operational guidelines, SOPs and other crucial docu- mentation. -

DeBellevue gave presentations to several groups around Hanscom Air Force Base dur- ing his visit. Then-Captain DeBellevue was the first Air Force weapon systems officer to become an ace during the Vietnam War. He earned the monicker America’s top “MiG Killer” when he and pilot Capt. John Madden downed two MiGs on Sept. 9, 1972. This gave the backseater six aerial victories, the most earned by USAF’s three Vietnam War aces. (Pilot Capt. Richard S. Ritchie and WSO Capt. Jeffrey S. Feinstein were the other two.) At Hanscom, DeBellevue delivered a keynote address to an afternoon gather- ing at the base’s Minuteman Commons community center.
