MEDIA CLIPS – July 20, 2017 Arenado thrives with unconventional technique Uncommon footwork paying off at plate for Rox slugger By Joe Trezza / MLB.com | 10:00 AM ET NEW YORK -- Give it a few years, some in the Rockies' organization believe, and the Major Leagues could be a league littered with players like Nolan Arenado. Not in terms of production -- not everyone woke up Thursday fresh off a three- homer game and eyeing a third straight RBI title -- but in hitting approach and style. Baseball is a copycat game. Do something at the plate a little differently and very well, and soon someone is bound to mirror it. Baseball people don't think it a coincidence Giants prospect Christian Arroyo resembles Buster Posey in stance and swing, or how Jose Bautista's leg kick led to Josh Donaldson's and Justin Turner's, and on and on. The next trend may come from a mechanical tweak in Arenado's load some are calling the driving force behind not just the third baseman's homers, but also his future standing as a pioneer. "It's now three straight years, and he comes in at the break and he's leading baseball in RBI," Rockies broadcaster and former outfielder Ryan Spilborghs said. "You start paying attention to him. Mechanically, what does he do?" It's what Arenado does with his back (right) foot, specifically, during his swing that is turning heads. Slow down the video of his three-homer game Wednesday. Before each one, Arenado actually lifts his back foot off the ground prior to stepping with the front foot, a momentum-creating motion that essentially gives him a running start into the pitch.

  • Cincinnati Reds' Top Prospects Can Be Broken Down Into Two Groups: Outfielders and Pitchers
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings January 14, 2015 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Aroldis Chapman donation propels MSJ locker room renovation By Shannon Russell / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] There's nothing like having an updated home locker room, and a donation by Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman ensured just that for Mount St. Joseph's men's volleyball team. The three-month project features 21 custom wood lockers and new flooring. More from MSJ: "This project absolutely could not have been completed without Mr. Chapman's generosity,'' coach Ryan Lengerich said. "He has ties to this program and believes in its mission and commitment to winning on the court, in the classroom and in the community. We are forever grateful and proud to have him as a friend to the program." The Mount building and grounds staff gutted the locker room in October, including removing small metal lockers and a privacy wall, which significantly increased the usable space in the locker room. New ceiling, trim and wall paint was followed by new flooring and custom lockers from JR Customs Unlimited in Hamilton. The locker room is a special place where the athletes celebrate the wins and pick each other up in defeat," Lengerich said. "These student-athletes deserve this locker room. They never asked for it, they only worked hard each day and were thankful for what they had. They are a humble group, and there is no doubt they will treat this locker room with respect and enjoy it." The men's volleyball locker room is provided by the university for use solely by the team.

MEDIA CLIPS – February 3, 2017 Young arms among Rockies' camp invites Veteran batters Denorfia, Reynolds also on non-roster list By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | @harding_at_mlb | February 2nd, 2017 DENVER -- Two fast-rising pitching prospects, right-hander Ryan Castellani and lefty Sam Howard, will make their first appearances in Major League camp this spring for the Rockies, who announced their non-roster invitees on Thursday. The group includes veterans Chris Denorfia, a right-handed-hitting outfielder, andMark Reynolds, who was the Rockies' primary first baseman last year. In all, the Rockies invited 22 players, including nine pitchers, to bring the total number to 62. Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout on Feb. 14, and the initial full-squad workout is Feb. 20. Castellani, who turns 21 on April 1, is a 2014 second-round pick out of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. He went 7- 8 with a 3.81 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings last season at Class A Advanced Modesto against older competition in the California League. Howard, who turns 24 on March 5, was drafted a round after Castellani out of Georgia Southern. Howard went 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA, and fanned 140 in 156 innings. In the latest ranking of top 30 Rockies prospects by MLBPipeline.com, Castellani was No. 12 and Howard was 20th. While non-roster invitations give the Rockies a chance to look at highly touted prospects before the Minor League season, this group also includes players who could help the big squad beginning on Opening Day -- especially pitchers.

MEDIA CLIPS –May 10, 2017 Remade Reynolds thriving with Rockies Slugger has improved his contact rate, retained power By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | @harding_at_mlb | May 9th, 2017 DENVER -- Rockies first baseman Mark Reynolds' opposite-way home run off the Cubs' Dylan Floro during Tuesday's 10-4 victory landed in the home bullpen Tuesday at Coors Field, and it fired up the way-back machine. That long ball gave Reynolds homers in four straight games heading into Tuesday's nightcap of a doubleheader against the Cubs, matching his career-best -- Aug. 6-9, 2012, with the D-backs. That streak ended in an 8-1 loss in the second game to the Cubs, as Reynolds went 0-for-1 with three walks. Just don't go thinking Reynolds is the same player now that he was then. This is the third year of the new Reynolds, who began reinventing himself when he joined the Cardinals in 2015 and found a mentor in the team's hitting coach, John Mabry. "Cliff's Notes? The easiest answer is keeping the barrel in the zone longer," Reynolds said. The old power is back. Reynolds, who eclipsed 30 homers three times and had 21 or more 2008-14, already has 12 this year. But he struck out a Major League-record 233 times in 2009, and led his league in that category 2008-11. 1 In 2015 with Mabry and the Cardinals, Reynolds hit .230 with 13 homers, but managed a .315 on-base percentage, which was his highest in three years. Last year with the Rockies brought a career-best .356 OBP.

MEDIA CLIPS –May 5, 2017 Rockies get solid road pitching from rookies Freeland had two quality starts including Thursday's gem By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | @harding_at_mlb | May 4th, 2017 SAN DIEGO -- Lefty Kyle Freeland demonstrated again on Thursday that the Rockies don't care how long someone has been around; if he pitches well, they're happy to see him. Freeland held the Padres to one run in 6 1/3 innings in the Rockies' eventual 3-2, 11-inning victory at Petco Park. During a 4-2 road trip, the National League West-leading Rockies (18-11) benefitted from four "quality starts" (six or more innings, three or fewer earned runs) -- two from Freeland and one apiece from Antonio Senzatela -- the reigning NL Rookie of the Month -- and German Marquez. • Senzatela warms to new nickname "Whenever you go on the road and you come back with a winning record, it's always great -- getting wins on the road isn't easy," said Freeland, who grew up in Denver and therefore is steeped in the team's long history of road struggles. Combined, Freeland, Senzatela and Marquez were 2-0 with a 1.48 ERA, 21 hits against in 24 1/3 innings, 16 strikeouts against six walks and just one home run. The pitching is necessary, since the road trip featured slumps from several key regulars -- Nolan Arenado (5-for- 24), Carlos Gonzalez (4-for-24), Mark Reynolds (2-for-14 before a 3-for-5 Thursday), Trevor Story (2-for-15) and Gerardo Parra (2-for-18).

MEDIA CLIPS – July 12th, 2018 Rockies stun D-backs with 19-run thrashing Four Colorado batters homer, including Gonzalez twice, starter Marquez Thomas Harding | MLB.com | July 11, 2018 DENVER -- The Rockies didn't just end an unseemly losing streak against the D-backs on Wednesday night. They obliterated it. Carlos Gonzalez homered twice and drove in six runs, Ian Desmond's first-inning blast accounted for three of his five RBIs, and Charlie Blackmon and pitcher German Marquez also went deep as the Rockies romped Arizona, 19-2, at Coors Field -- where the D-backs had previously won nine straight times. "I don't know," said Blackmon, whose Statcast-projected 434-foot homer off Jorge De La Rosa in the third was his deepest of the season. "We just whacked the ball tonight. I would like to think that it means we're going to continue to do that, but realistically, you're not going to score 19 runs a lot. "But at the same time, we did a really good job playing the game also. So it wasn't a complete fluke -- there was some good play in there." More important than the game stats was that the Rockies finished the night 3 1/2 games behind the National League West-leading D-backs and with a chance to win an important pre-All-Star break series. And they ended their longest losing streak at Coors against any club. 1 "We have a chance to win a series tomorrow, and they have a chance, also," said Nolan Arenado, whose 2-for-3 night with two RBIs seemed ho-hum in comparison with some of his teammates.
