The Yard Goats have 14 newcomers along with 11 returning players. Infielder Colton Welker, who won the Class-A California League batting title last year and is listed as the Rockies #2 overall prospect, will start the season with the Yard Goats. He will be joined in the Hartford infield with #7 prospect Tyler Nevin, who is the son of New York Yankees third base coach and former 12-year Major League veteran Phil Nevin. The Rockies set the roster and are responsible for all the player transactions during the season. Schaeffer’s coaching staff includes returning Hitting Coach and former MLB player Lee Stevens, and newcomer Steve Merriman, who will serve as Pitching Coach. Hoshito Mizutani returns to the Yard Goats as Head Athletic Trainer and Phil Bailey returns as the Physical Performance Coach... Last season under Schaeffer, six Yard Goats players were named to the Eastern League All-Star Team, two players were selected to the Major League Futures Game, and two players were chosen as Eastern League award winners. Schaeffer and Stevens helped develop infielder Garrett Hampson, who began the season with the Yard Goats, and finished the season on the Colorado Rockies playoff roster. The Yard Goats went 65-72 and finished in third place in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division.
