The Yard Goats have 14 newcomers along with 11 returning players. Infielder Colton Welker, who won the Class-A California League batting title last year and is listed as the Rockies #2 overall prospect, will start the season with the Yard Goats. He will be joined in the Hartford infield with #7 prospect Tyler Nevin, who is the son of New York Yankees third base coach and former 12-year Major League veteran Phil Nevin. The Rockies set the roster and are responsible for all the player transactions during the season. Schaeffer’s coaching staff includes returning Hitting Coach and former MLB player Lee Stevens, and newcomer Steve Merriman, who will serve as Pitching Coach. Hoshito Mizutani returns to the Yard Goats as Head Athletic Trainer and Phil Bailey returns as the Physical Performance Coach... Last season under Schaeffer, six Yard Goats players were named to the Eastern League All-Star Team, two players were selected to the Major League Futures Game, and two players were chosen as Eastern League award winners. Schaeffer and Stevens helped develop infielder Garrett Hampson, who began the season with the Yard Goats, and finished the season on the Colorado Rockies playoff roster. The Yard Goats went 65-72 and finished in third place in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division. DUNKIN’ DONUTS PARK NAMED 2018 “BEST DOUBLE-A BALLPARK” For the second straight season Dunkin’ Donuts Park was selected by Ballpark Digest as the “Best Double-A ballpark in America”... It is the first time that a minor league ballpark won the award in consecutive seasons... PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates) won the award in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016...     NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY UCLA has made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 11 in the last 15 seasons. The Bruins advanced to the College World Series three times in a four-year span (2010, 2012 and 2013), capturing the NCAA Championship in 2013. That season’s trip to Omaha, Neb., marked UCLA’s fifth appearance at the College World Series. UCLA’s other CWS appearances came in 1969, 1997, 2010 and 2012. As head coach, John Savage has led UCLA to the postseason in 10 of 14 seasons. He is the program’s only head coach to have led UCLA to postseason appearances in four consecutive seasons (2010-13) and to the NCAA Championship (2013). He coached the Bruins to the Super Regionals in 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013. UCLA also hosted the NCAA Los Angeles Regional (at Jackie Robinson Stadium) in five of six seasons (2010-2013, 2015). In addition, the Bruins hosted the NCAA Super Regional round in 2010 and 2012. Prior to 2010, UCLA had not hosted postseason games since 1986. Former head coach Gary Adams made 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the Bruins’ 1997 appearance at the College World Series. In six games at the 1997 NCAA Midwest Regional (at Oklahoma State), the Bruins outscored their opposition, 72-24. UCLA closed the six-game stretch with five victories, routing host Oklahoma State 14-2 and 22-2 on the same day. Eric Valent earned Tournament MVP honors after blasting six home runs, while Nick Theodorou batted .667, collecting 16 hits in 24 at-bats. Therefore, I am using this plat- form to address some issues that have come to my attention. Since the cost for out-of-town memberships to our Senior Center went up in January 2020, there have been a few miscon- ceptions that have come to my attention. First and foremost, the one rumor that I would definitely like to address is the story going around that the Prospect Town Council raised the dues of our out-of-town members because they are trying to “get rid” of the non-residents that come here. The story goes that the Town Council is trying to keep our Senior Center strictly for Prospect residents only. Nothing could be further from the truth. I value the out-of-town members who come here. I feel they have contributed significantly to the growth of our Senior Center. Many of these members run programs here and volun- teer in a number of different capacities. They are my lifeline and help me in ways that I could never repay them for. I and the Town Council members would never want to “get rid” of them. I will tell you point blank why the Town Council decided to raise membership dues for out- of-town members.

The group includes veterans Chris Denorfia, a right-handed-hitting outfielder, andMark Reynolds, who was the Rockies' primary first baseman last year. In all, the Rockies invited 22 players, including nine pitchers, to bring the total number to 62. Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout on Feb. 14, and the initial full-squad workout is Feb. 20. Castellani, who turns 21 on April 1, is a 2014 second-round pick out of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. He went 7- 8 with a 3.81 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings last season at Class A Advanced Modesto against older competition in the California League. Howard, who turns 24 on March 5, was drafted a round after Castellani out of Georgia Southern. Howard went 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA, and fanned 140 in 156 innings. In the latest ranking of top 30 Rockies prospects by MLBPipeline.com, Castellani was No. 12 and Howard was 20th. While non-roster invitations give the Rockies a chance to look at highly touted prospects before the Minor League season, this group also includes players who could help the big squad beginning on Opening Day -- especially pitchers.
