Bates Middle School holds its first NASA STEM Parent Night.

Students celebrate Pinwheels for Peace Everyone at Alice Drive Elementary School had a groovy time celebrating Pinwheels for Peace on Fri- day. All students in the school made a pinwheel to represent peace, and each class decorated the front lawn of the school with their pinwheels. In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. ADE took part in the international art project by “planting” pinwheels with messages of peace. Students learned about the project during art class this month and that “Peace Begins with Me!” Through their words and actions they can be peacemakers in their homes, schools, community and world. They were excited to “plant” their pin- wheels on the school grounds as a public state- ment and art exhibit/installation. Pinwheels for Peace was started in 2005 by two art teachers from Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to ex- press their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year, groups in more than 1,325 locations throughout the world were spinning pinwheels on Sept. 21, and there were approximately 500,000 pinwheels spinning throughout the world. Last year, more than 4 mil- lion pinwheels were spinning in more than 3,500 locations, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America. This project is non-political. To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it all comes down to a simple definition: a state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence, freedom from conflict or dis- agreement among people or groups of people.

PHOTOS FROM KENNEDY FAMILY COLLECTION / JOHN F. KENNEDY LIBRARY FOUNDATION VIA AP In this circa 1948 photo provided by the Kennedy Family Collection, courtesy of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, members of the Kennedy family pose for a photo in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. They are from left, John F. Kennedy, Jean Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., Patricia Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy, and in foreground, Edward M. Kennedy. The Boston-based museum completed an 18-month project in 2018 to catalog and digitize more than 1,700 black-and-white Kennedy family snapshots that are viewable online, giving a nation still obsessed with “Camelot” a candid new glimpse into their everyday lives.

Call Rhonda Barrick at: (803) 774-1264 | E-mail: [email protected] What’s better than a cup of coffee and a slice of cake? 2 delicious ones to choose from BY AMERICA'S TEST KITCHEN This ultra-rich coffee cake is pure decadence, from its nutty topping and dramatic swirls of cinnamon sugar to its supremely moist, dense crumb. We cut softened butter into the dry ingredi- ents for a tight, velvety crumb, and sour cream delivered distinct tang. Sprinkling a simple streusel over the batter in two layers cre- ated a dramatic swirling effect, and topping the cake off with more streusel (this time boosted with butter and pecans) gave it a crumbly crust. A fixed-bottom 10-inch tube pan (with a 10 cup capacity) is best for this recipe. Note that the streusel is divided into two parts — one for the inner swirls and one for the topping.
