    Klassiker des indischen Films MOTHER INDIA – Werte und Visionen MOTHER INDIA (Mutter Indien, Mehboob Khan, 1957) ist die inzwischen fast fünfzig Jahre alte Ikone des indischen Films. Das Bild, in dem sich die Bedeutung dieses Werkes kondensiert, ist eine Darstellung Radhas – der von Nargis gespielten Hauptdarstellerin – die einen Pflug zieht. Ur- sprünglich zeigte das Plakat des Films seine Hauptakteurin mit einem Baby auf dem Arm. Als anlässlich einer Wiederveröffentlichung in den 80er Jahren das Plakat neu entworfen wurde, verzichtete man auf das ur- sprüngliche Motiv und bediente sich der Einstellung, die sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon in die Köpfe mehrerer Generationen von Kinogängern eingebrannt hatte: die sich aufopfernde Mutter Radha mit der Deichsel des Pfluges über der Schulter. Die Mutter Radha (Nargis) kämpft für das Überleben ihrer Kinder und spannt sich selbst vor den Pflug. Im ersten Moment überraschend ist, dass es sich bei diesem Film, der 1957 in die Kinos kam, nicht um eine neue Geschichte handelt. MOTHER INDIA ist vielmehr ein Remake, eine Neuverfilmung der Handlung des Films AURAT (Frau, Mehboob Khan) des gleichen Regisseurs aus dem 58 INDISCHER FILM Jahr 1940. Dabei ist das Erscheinungsjahr dieses Remakes kein Zufall. 1957 jährte sich die Unabhängigkeit Indiens zum zehnten Male. Auch wenn der Film nur den Lebensweg einer einzigen Familie mit deren Mutter im Zentrum nachzeichnet, so ist er als Allegorie für das Streben und das Leiden ganz Indiens zu sehen. Der Titel „Mother India“ steht nicht nur für Radha, deren Geschichte von der Hochzeit bis ins hohe Al- ter nachgezeichnet wird, sondern für die Art und Weise, in der sich die Menschen mit ihrem Land verbunden sehen.
