NATIONAL WILDLIFE WEEK CCNTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

A collage of animals, woven into the shape of a man's face, has won 13-year-old Dan Barrow, of Selkirk Junior High, first place in this year's National Wildlife Week senior poster contest. Dan's artful poster reads, "Only You Can Save Wildlife." First place in the junior poster contest was awarded to nine-year-old Tanya Stefanec, of Fisher Branch, for her use of an hourglass in showing how pollution threatens wildlife. Tanya's poster carries the message, "Is Time Running Out?" Placing first in the senior category of the prose contest was Will Wetherill, of Kelwood School, Kelwood, Manitoba. Jillian Horton, of Brandon, placed first in the junior category. The four first place students in the prose and poster categories won a three-day trip to Churchill, Manitoba, compliments of Pacific Western Airlines. In the Doodle Poster contest, students from Prairie Mennonite School, Plum Coulee, placed first in the senior and intermediate categories. The senior team of winners consisted of David Wiebe, Jason Elias, George Friesen and Isaac Dyck. The intermediate winners consisted of Anna and Tina Krahn, Anna Penner and Anna Fehr. The junior category was won by Julie Good, of Boissevain. All first-place winners in the Doodle Poster contest won wildlife books and a one-day field trip to a Wildlife Management Area. In commending the 4,500 students who took part in the contest, Natural Resources Minister Samuel Uskiw invites all participants and interested Manitobans to view the winning entries at St. Vital Centre, April 8 to 13 or the Brandon Shoppers Mall, April 16 to 20. They also will be exhibited at Fort Whyte Centre, Winnipeg, May 1 to 31, and at various wildlife events throughout the year. Mr. Uskiw added that wildlife exhibits will also be set up at the Mall, April 8 to 13 and the Dauphin Market Place, April 10 to 13. Runner-up in the senior category of the poster contest was Paul Gauthier, of St. Anne. Honorable mentions were awarded to Jason Elias, of Prairie Mennonite School, Plum Coulee; Robert Swan, Sheri Gregorash, Phadra-Ann Purvis, of Morse Place School, Winnipeg; Jamie Irvine and Jason Nalan, of Rivers Elementary School; Ngoc Huynh, of Gordon Bell School, Winnipeg; Alex Rowney, of Selkirk; and Joel Combot, of Ecole St. Laurent. In the junior category of the poster contest, Jillian Horton, of Brandon, came in as runner-up. Honorable mentions went to Anna Penner, of Prairie Mennonite School; Abe Penner, Andre Masson and Steven Funk, of MacGregor Elementary School; Jonathan Morriseau, of Centennial School, Selkirk; Mathew Thordarson, of Gimli Elementary School, Edward Hofer, of James Valley Colony, Elie; Brian Painter and Alna Bottcher, of Fort la Reine School, Portage la Prairie; and Susan Stuart, of Phoenix School, Headingly. In the senior category of the prose contest, Heather Murray, of F.W. Gilbert School, , placed as runner-up. Honorable mentions were awarded to: Brenda Paddock, of Rivers Elementary School, Colleen Rohne, of Inwood School; Stacey FUnkner, of ; Dwayne Scriven, of Winnipeg; Jason Elias, of Prairie Mennonite School, Plum Coulee; and Janet Stefaniuk, of F.W. Gilbert School, Pinawa. Runner-up in the junior category of the prose contest was Corinne Virgovic of Selkirk. Honorable mentions were awarded to Jane Sharif and Elinor Simons, of Balmoral Hall, Winnipeg; Krista Boryskavich, Carolyn Fast, and Luella Janzen, of Rivers Elementary School, and Monica Guenter, of Winnipeg. Runners-up in the prose and poster contest were awarded binoculars and field guides. Honorable mentions received wildlife books.
