Volume 18 (2011), Article 3 http://chinajapan.org/articles/18/3 Lim, Tai Wei “Re-centering Trade Periphery through Fired Clay: A Historiography of the Global Mapping of Japanese Trade Ceramics in the Premodern Global Trading Space” Sino-Japanese Studies 18 (2011), article 3. Abstract: A center-periphery system is one that is not static, but is constantly changing. It changes by virtue of technological developments, design innovations, shifting centers of economics and trade, developmental trajectories, and the historical sensitivities of cultural areas involved. To provide an empirical case study, this paper examines the material culture of Arita/Imari 有田/伊万里 trade ceramics in an effort to understand the dynamics of Japan’s regional and global position in the transition from periphery to the core of a global trading system. Sino-Japanese Studies http://chinajapan.org/articles/18/3 Re-centering Trade Periphery through Fired Clay: A Historiography of the Global Mapping of Japanese Trade Ceramics in the 1 Premodern Global Trading Space Lim Tai Wei 林大偉 Chinese University of Hong Kong Introduction Premodern global trade was first dominated by overland routes popularly characterized by the Silk Road, and its participants were mainly located in the vast Eurasian space of this global trading area. While there are many definitions of the Eurasian trading space that included the so-called Silk Road, some of the broadest definitions include the furthest ends of the premodern trading world. For example, Konuralp Ercilasun includes Japan in the broadest definition of the silk route at the farthest East Asian end.2 There are also differing interpretations of the term “Silk Road,” but most interpretations include both the overland as well as the maritime silk route. -
Typhoons Damage Hokkaido Production Japan
THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY Voluntary - Public Date: 10/13/2016 GAIN Report Number: JA6041 Japan Post: Tokyo Typhoons Damage Hokkaido Production Report Categories: Agricultural Situation Approved By: Jess K. Paulson Prepared By: Tomohiro Kurai Report Highlights: Heavy rains hit Hokkaido in August, damaging horticultural products, industrial facilities, roads, and railways. As Hokkaido is a major production region for Japanese onions, pumpkins, carrots and potatoes, market prices for these domestic products have seen an immediate spike. Accordingly, increased market opportunities may exist for foreign products for which there is a supply shortage. Keywords: JA6041, Japan, Hokkaido, Typhoon, Sweet Corn, Potato, Carrot, Onion. General Information: Hokkaido is located 600 miles north of Tokyo and is Japan's largest agricultural producing region, with approximately 1,150,000 hectares (ha) of total arable land (i.e., 26 percent of Japan’s agricultural area). Hokkaido is the leading producing region for numerous agricultural crops, including onions, pumpkins, carrots, potatoes and sweet corn. Hokkaido’s northern geography normally provides cool weather, and is generally spared from Japan’s rainy season and typhoon strikes. However, in August 2016, four typhoons struck Hokkaido for the first time since record keeping began more than 100 years ago. The typhoon strikes brought heavy rains and flooding to Hokkaido, and also damaged infrastructure such as roads and railways necessary to support logistics. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) reported that approximately 24,000 ha of land received damaging levels of rain and flooding. -

Paleogene Ostracodes from the Kishima Formation, Kishima Group, Saga Prefecture, Southwestern Japan
Bulletin of the Mizunami Fossil Museum, no. 33 (2006), p. 87–101, 2 pls., 5 figs., 3 tables. © 2006, Mizunami Fossil Museum Paleogene ostracodes from the Kishima Formation, Kishima Group, Saga Prefecture, southwestern Japan Tatsuhiko Yamaguchi*, Ryoichi Nagao**, and Takahiro Kamiya*** *Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Niigata University, 8050 Ikarashi-2nocho, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, 950-2181, Japan <[email protected]> **Setaka Town, Yamato County, Fukuoka Prefecture, 835-0023, Japan ***Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Kanazawa University, Kakumamachi, Ishikawa Prefecture 920-1192, Japan <[email protected]> Abstract The uppermost Eocene–lowermost Oligocene Kishima Formation, containing abundant Mazean molluscan fauna, is distributed in the Karatsu Coalfield of Saga Prefecture. The formation yields at least 12 ostracode species from muddy sandstones. The fossil ostracode assemblages consist chiefly of Acanthocythereis volubilis, Eopaijenbochella sinensis, Munseyella simplex, Trachyleberis inouei sp. nov., and Cytherella sp. They correlate with assemblages from outer- shelf deposits of the lowermost Oligocene Itanoura Formation in the Sakito–Matsushima Coalfield of Nagasaki Prefecture, which also yield a Mazean molluscan fauna. This suggests as follows: 1) Ostracode faunas from the uppermost Eocene– lowermost Oligocene Mazean Stage are characterized by Cytherella sp. associated with A. volubilis, E. sinensis, and M. simplex; 2) the muddy sandstones were deposited not in the upper sublittoral zone presumed by the previous studies on fossil molluscs, but in outer-shelf environments. The new species mentioned above is described herein. Key words: Eocene–Oligocene, Itanoura Formation, Kishima Formation, Mazean Stage, Ostracoda Introduction Eocene/Oligocene boundary (Okada, 1992) and is situated in the Karatsu basin (Iwata and Kameo, 2001). -
