Flood Hazard Identification Program Watino – Smoky River – Flood Hazard Study – Summary Community Hamlet of Watino Birch Hills County Municipal District of Smoky River No. 130 Stream Smoky River Basin Peace River – 7G This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along an approximate 8 km reach of the Smoky River through Watino and surrounding area. The design discharge for the Smoky River is 12700 m³/s. The Smoky River watershed includes mountain, foothill and plains regions. Flooding within the study area typically occurs during the open water season as a result of heavy rainfall events, either alone or combined with snowmelt runoff. Annual peak flows can be expected between April and August, but the highest flows are most likely to occur in June. A digital representation of the flood hazard maps prepared as part of this study can be viewed online. • Watino Flood Hazard Mapping For more information regarding specific flood hazards in your community, please contact Alberta Environment and Parks by email at [email protected]. Transcription of the Isabel Campbell Newspaper Index for Names G Introduction The following table was transcribed by volunteers at South Peace Regional Archives from Isabel Campbell’s card catalogue index of Grande Prairie newspapers. Miss Campbell diligently tracked the history of various Grande Prairie area people as they appeared in local newspapers from 1913 to 1961. Featured newspapers include the Grande Prairie Herald (1913-1938), the Northern Tribune (1932-1939), and the Grande Prairie Herald-Tribune (1939- present). The table is organized in alphabetical order by surname. Newspaper dates featuring items about that person are listed by month, day, and year. The location within the paper is given as a page number and column number on that page. Notes are occasionally given to provide more detail about the content of the article indexed. A specific place is given when one was identified in the article and by Miss Campbell. Where no place is listed, one should assume the place referred to is Grande Prairie. The pdf is word-searchable. The table does not include links to the actual articles mentioned. To read an article, consult the newspaper of that date. The website, Our Future, Our Past: The Alberta Heritage Digitization Project (AHDP), contains digitized copies of Grande Prairie newspapers from 1913-1949 (see http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/newspapr/place.asp?place=Grande+Prairie&Submit2=Look+up). A complete collection of newspapers (1913-present) is available on microfilm at the Grande Prairie Public Library in the Isabel Campbell room. South Peace Regional Archives does not maintain a complete collection of local newspapers, but may have specific issues.

The community is a commodity, hopefully one that someone wants to invest in. The buyer is a business, developer, or investor that is looking for a community to set up in. 1) First and foremost, the Village of Rycroft needs to target its economic development efforts to those areas most likely to be successful. For example, most small urbans lament the loss of a vibrant retail downtown. This is unfortunately a result of a number of factors such as the increase in online shopping, improvements in transportation, and outdated downtown buildings. But it does not mean the downtown area can’t be re-conceptualized and re-purposed with a strategic vision and purpose guiding your Council decisions.

  • 2000 I , Eileen Nagel, Am Truly Sorry If I Have Spelled Your Name Wrong, Or Placed You in the Wrong Town
NAMES INCLUDED ON THIS CD. ******************************** WOMEN OF UNIFARM 1969 - 2000 I , Eileen Nagel, am truly sorry if I have spelled your name wrong, or placed you in the wrong town. Sometimes I found more than one spelling for your name; and often I knew the general location of your home, but had no way of verifying it , So I placed you in that “general” location. Example: Were you from Dapp, or Pibroch, or Westlock. Not knowing for sure, I would guess Pibroch. If I am really wrong in my guess, and you are really concerned, let me know, and I will correct it for “ the master copy “ before submitting it to the archives. I made countless phone calls, but often the answer was “ I “think” they were from………” So, I gave up phoning, and I guessed. Sometimes I didn’t have a clue, so I didn’t record any location. I am very concerned that surnames are spelled right. Contact me with any errors . That way I get a wrong corrected, and I get to talk with you. • River Ice Observation Report River Forecast Centre April 19, 2013
River Ice Observation Report River Forecast Centre April 19, 2013 2012 – 2013 Peace River Report No. 34 The observation flight scheduled for today has been postponed due to inclement weather conditions. A ground observation on Tuesday morning located the ice front just downstream of the Hwy 986 bridge (km 413.9 at 07:45 MST). It had receded 8 km since Monday’s observation flight. At that time, it was 400 m away from connecting to a long open lead that extended at least 30 km. The ice front is now well downstream of the Town of Peace River, and its specific location will be determined on Monday morning. The ice covers on the Little Smoky and Smoky Rivers have begun to break up. Localized ice jams (deteriorated ice accumulations) have occurred in some locations, resulting in fluctuating water levels. The ice cover on the North Heart River remains in place, and continues to deteriorate with significant surface water present. The water level gauge near Nampa indicates that water levels have begun to increase in response to snowmelt and changing conditions. As these rivers break up, ice may be observed passing through the Town of Peace River. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly below seasonal next week, which is expected to moderate the snowmelt response of rivers in the area. Conditions on these rivers will be closely monitored over the weekend through ground observations, water level gauges and remote cameras. ESRD and BC Hydro remain in contact regarding river ice conditions and operation of the BC Hydro Peace River facilities.
