Former Ohio State Quarterback J.T. Barrett To Play In The Spring League Former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett’s professional football career will continue after The Spring League announced on Monday afternoon that he’s one of 12 quarterbacks participating in its upcoming season. The #TSL2020 Alphas QBs! pic.twitter.com/PvnomdW4d5 — The Spring League (@TheSpringLeague) October 12, 2020 Barrett – who finished his college career (2013-17) with a school-record 38 wins, 9,434 passing yards, 3,263 rushing yards and 147 total touchdowns – signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers, but has yet to see NFL action beyond the preseason. Barrett is the only former Buckeye playing in the league, but he will be joined by former Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson, whose Blues take on Barrett’s Alphas in the first game of the season. The Spring League is a development football league that started in 2017 and typically takes place between March and April, holding practices and games in front of NFL scouts. The season was postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic and will now be played in a bubble at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The four-week regular season will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and conclude on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Games will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1, including the championship game on Monday, Nov. 23. As for the quality of Barrett’s competition, the league “hoping that the reduction in NFL rosters, the cancellation of the CFL and the number of college players who opted out will add quality talent this fall,” Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand said. “It plans to return for a spring season in 2021.” For four free issues of the biweekly print edition of Buckeye Sports Bulletin, sign up at the link below. I think it went great.” The 6-foot-5, 312-pound Risner, who spent Monday meeting with Washington Redskins officials, gushed about his recent tour and interview at the Broncos’ headquarters, and how stoked he was to get an up close look at the team he grew up rooting for on the plains of Morgan County. “Just for me to be able to be at the Broncos’ facility, a team that I watched growing up — I walked by Joe Flacco and the guys in the locker room,” Risner recalled. “And to sit down and talk to (general manager) Mr. (John) Elway and to talk with Coach Munchak and Coach (Vic) Fangio, that whole staff, it was just a blessing.

TSL will again partner with FOX Sports to showcase an expanded slate of games throughout the season, with full television schedule details to be released next week. TSL’s 2021 season features eight teams, competing in a six-week regular season from two hub markets. Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana will play host to TSL’s North Division and consist of the Conquerors, led by Head Coach Jerry Glanville, Aviators, Alphas, and Linemen. The South Division will be headquartered in Houston, Texas and be comprised in part of the returning league champion Generals, coached by Bart Andrus, and Blues. Two former NFL head coaches, round out the remaining two teams in the South Division. Mike Riley, who served as the San Diego Chargers head coach for three seasons will lead the Sea Lions, one of two expansion teams for the 2021 season. Riley also served as head coach at Oregon State (1997- 1998, 2003-2014) and Nebraska (2015-2017). The Jousters will have Kevin Gilbride at the helm. Gilbride spent 20 years in the NFL including seven years as offensive coordinator of the New York Giants, winning two Super Bowl rings along the way.
