  • Felsham Conservation Area Appraisal
FELSHAM CONSERVATION AREA APPRAISAL © Crown copyright All Rights Reserved M S D C Licence no 100017810 2010 INTRODUCTION The conservation area in Felsham was originally designated by Mid Suffolk District Council in 1996. The Council has a duty to review its conservation area designations from time to time, and this appraisal examines Felsham under a number of different headings as set out in English Heritage’s ‘Guidance on Conservation Area Appraisals’ (2006). As such it is a straightforward appraisal of Felsham’s built environment in conservation terms. This document is neither prescriptive nor overly descriptive, but more a demonstration of ‘quality of place’, sufficient for the briefing of the Planning Officer when assessing proposed works in the area. The photographs and maps are thus intended to contribute as much Pump Wheel as the text itself. As the English Heritage guidelines point out, the appraisal is to be read as a general overview, rather than as a comprehensive listing, and the omission of any particular building, feature or space does not imply that it is of no interest in conservation terms. Text, photographs and map overlays by Patrick Taylor, Conservation Architect, Mid Suffolk District Council 2011. Vintage Transport © Crown copyright All Rights Reserved M S D C Licence no 100017810 2010 TOPOGRAPHICAL FRAMEWORK Felsham is situated in central Suffolk about eight miles south-east of Bury St Edmunds. It lies on the boulder clay of ‘High Suffolk’, a recent glacial deposit over chalk at greater depth. The village lies on gently sloping ground between 75 and 85 metres above OD, very much on a watershed, standing near the beginnings of many local waterways.

  • DC/18/04491 Consultee Comments , Item 133. PDF 2 MB
Application no. DC/18/04491 Reconsultation Amended application for 28 dwellings, Land adjacent to Buxhall Lodge, Buxhall Road, Great Finborough. Great Finborough Parish Council OBJECTS to this application - This amended application shows no material changes to the proposal in order to address the objections and concerns previously expressed apart from the small reduction in number of dwellings with a slight relocation away from the Listed Buxhall Lodge. This is not a sustainable development in terms of the Mid Suffolk Core Strategy 2008, the emerging Joint Babergh & Mid Suffolk Local Plan or the National Planning Policy Framework NPPF. This site is outside the existing settlement area and should be refused. The extension of settlement boundary to include this site in the emerging Draft Joint Local Plan is vigorously contested by the Parish Council and should not be used to influence a decision on this application. The applicant refers several times to Great Finborough's classification as a Primary Village however this status is completely out of date, there has been no shop and PO for several years, an intermittently open pub and a now non existent bus service. A development of 28 more houses on top of the recent granting of a 24 dwelling development directly opposite this proposed site is not sustainable, further market housing supply is not considered suitable in Great Finborough and this application is contrary to several points in Para 17 of the NPPF. Great Finborough Parish Council have been supportive of growth in the village and fully understand the reasons for encouraging it but this has to be sustainable and of good design.

  • Joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Landscape Guidance August 2015
Joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Landscape Guidance August 2015 Joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Landscape Guidance 2015 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 The landscape of Babergh and Mid Suffolk (South and North Suffolk) is acknowledged as being attractive and an important part of why people choose to live and work here. However current pressures for development in the countryside, and the changing agricultural and recreational practices and pressures, are resulting in changes that in some instances have been damaging to the local character and distinctiveness of the landscape. 1.1.1 Some development is necessary within the countryside, in order to promote a sustainable prosperous and vibrant rural economy. However, such development would be counterproductive if it were to harm the quality of the countryside/landscape it is set within and therefore the quality of life benefits, in terms of health and wellbeing that come from a rural landscape in good condition.1 1.1.2 The Council takes the view that there is a need to safeguard the character of both districts countryside by ensuring new development integrates positively with the existing character. Therefore, a Landscape Guidance has been produced to outline the main elements of the existing character and to outline broad principles that all development in the countryside will be required to follow. 1.1.3 Well designed and appropriately located development in the countryside can capture the benefits of sustainable economic development whilst still retaining and enhancing valuable landscape characteristics, which are so important to Babergh and Mid Suffolk. 1.1.4 The protection and enhancement of both districts landscape is essential not only for the intrinsic aesthetic and historic value that supports tourism and the economy for the area but also to maintain the quality of life for the communities that live in the countryside.
