Dear folks: Items for this week: **Mass of Healing: The clergy abuse scandal has broken trust, wounded individuals, and scarred hearts. Many people have suggested a, “Mass of Healing.” This Mass cannot take away the scar of the abuse, but it is asking Jesus to renew the Church, repent for the demonic actions of some clergy, restore trust, and begin to heal those wounded. This idea is a grass-roots movement by the laity; those types of movements are the best and must be acted upon. On Saturday, September 14th, at 10:00 a.m., this Mass will take place at Saint Mary Magdalen. I am listening to ideas from the laity about what can be done and what needs to be done at this Mass. Of course, all are invited! **Calendar of Events: September 21st: “Brentwood Days,” Parade: Saint Mary Magdalen School will take part in this parade. The principal of the school, Mrs. Kathy Wiseman, and I will also take part in the pa- rade. September 22nd: Mass in the Grass at, “Memorial Park.” This mass will be the 11:30 a.m. Sun- day Mass and afterwards, a picnic with hotdogs, beverages, and deserts will be offered. This Mass has really become a favorite for the parish. It will be an, “official,” Sunday Mass. Now, let us pray for good weather. If the weather looks bad, the Sunday Mass will stay in Church. The reason to do this is to celebrate the very good stewardship of the parish, to celebrate so many giving of their time and talent and treasure to bring the presence of God to the corner of Manchester and Brentwood and beyond. I want to thank the parish Stewardship Committee for organizing this! September 27th: Food Truck Night: This has become an annual celebration of the fall. The evening is on the parish parking lot; there will be places to sit and relax and of course there will be, “Food Trucks.” This bulletin has the details. It really is a fun time to enjoy camarade- rie, good food, and the, “Bob Cuban Band.” Thanks to all who put this all together! September 29th: **C.A.R.E. Mass of the Anointing of the Sick: Please join us for the annu- al, “Fall C.A.R.E. Mass of the Anointing of the Sick and Luncheon,” on Sunday, September 29th, at 11:30 a.m. Mass. Brunch will follow the Mass. This will be held in the rooms below the Church. There is a disability elevator for access to the brunch. If you have any questions or need a ride please email or call Mary Ann Bigland or Lorraine Gephart: Mary Ann Bigland: 314-961-0807; [email protected] Lorraine Gephart: 314-283-5566; [email protected] Reasons for receiving the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick include: Life-threatening illness- Chronic disease- On-going infirmity- Surgery- **Adult Faith Development: The fall session of Adult Faith Development, will begin Monday, Sep- tember 23rd from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Church basement. The subject of the fall program is, “Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy.” The program runs through the 18th of November. You can come to any or all nights. For more information contact Nancy Shroff at the rectory: email: nan- [email protected] phone: 314-961-8400.

**Journey in Faith: INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? DID YOU MISS A SACRA- MENT GROWING UP? The Rite of Christian Initiation/Journey in Faith classes will begin in October and there is a place for you. It is a welcoming program that introduces people to Catholicism and/or introduces Catholics to the sacraments. We meet weekly from October to April. There is no cost to participate. The number one source for our classes is right here at Saint Mary Magdalen. It may be someone new to religion exploring God through our parish; and/or it may be a non-Catholic family that has children in our school; it may be a spouse who is married to a Catholic but never pursued Ca- tholicism. Is God calling you to a closer relationship? Here is your opportunity to explore that call. That baggage you bring doesn’t matter—God can handle it! If you have any questions, please call Andy Theising: 314-780-0154; or email: [email protected] **Covent: I have taken all of the comments concerning the convent for the past 2 weeks and lis- tened to them. The majority of folks have said to tear the convent down; it’s not worth the cost. How- ever, there are some who are concerned that if the convent is torn down, how will this affect the youth movement here at the parish? Catie Cox, the youth minister who does a wonderful job with the teens, needs a place to meet with them. I am working on this. There are some interesting ideas that have been floated. If you were to ask me by the numbers how many for keeping the convent and how many for tearing it down, I’d say that 25 people have commented to tear it down; 2 people have said to keep it as a youth house; 1 person expressed that while understanding the need to tear the convent down, there was con- cern about the youth; and 2 people have commented to me to make more parking with it. I’ve asked a professional parking lot paver how many parking spots could be achieved if we tear down the convent but keep the chapel (which will stay) and keep the playground (which will stay). He said maybe 8-12 spots; 2 weeks ago I wrote 10-15 spots. If you choose either set of numbers, that still is not enough to make a difference for the venues/Masses we have on the property. One comment centered on the usa- ble brick, interior doors/frames, and any usable roofing material if the convent is torn down; that could be sold off to help pay for the tear down. The idea that really seems to be accepted by folks is to make this a green space for the kids during school and on the weekends and for the community at large. There is also concern about storage options if the convent is torn down; that is a matter that will need to be dealt with. Right now is, “fact-finding.” As of this bulletin column being written on Tues- day evening, September 3rd, I will still be taking comments through Saturday. After that, the next phase of planning will need to begin. Let’s just see how this all plays out. I’m not trying to be rude about a time limit on peoples’ opinions, but at some point, there has to be a cut-off. And, folks, please keep the following point in mind. That convent has been closed for 2 years and there has been no great angst caused by this. It has been used, by and large, a few hours a week for youth group (and we will have to find space for the youth group if the convent is torn down). There has been no other use for this space. Is this a necessary space to spend that much money on? **Grandparents Day: My understanding is that the Sunday after Labor Day is, Grandparents Day. With that in mind, let us pray for all grandparents, living and deceased. Let us honor them this weekend with a phone call, a text message, a face-time, and/or whatever other kind of communication platform is out there. If they are in heaven, let us thank God for their good example and love for us; now that I know about this day, Sunday I will be going to visit my grandparents in the cemetery just to thank them for their wisdom and love over the years. Grandparents are such a gift! Have a good week Fr. Jack
