  • Villar Pushes Senate Commendation for Orcollo’S China Open Win
Office of Sen. Manny Villar Rm. 503, Senate of the Philippines, GSIS Financial Center, Pasay City 552-6601 to 80 loc. 6507, 6508 and 6511 ● 7 552-6734 ● www.senatorvillar.com NEWS RELEASE 19 September 2012 Villar pushes Senate commendation for Orcollo’s China Open win Sen. Manny Villar lauded Dennis Orcollo, one of the country’s top billiards players, for winning the 2012 China Open held in Shanghai recently. “Orcollo’s win solidifies the Filipino’s dominance over billiards. For years, more and more Filipinos are getting international fame in this sport and like boxing, people are seeing billiards as the Filipino’s game,” Villar said. Villar authored Proposed Senate Resolution No. 875 commending Orcollo for beating Chinese-Taipei’s Lu Hui Chan with the 11-9 score. Orcollo branded the win, his first in a Chinese pro event, as the most special win of his career. Previously, Orcollo won in some of the biggest pool tournaments in the world, including the World Pool League, World Pool Masters, Derby City Classics, US Bar Table and Billiards Congress of America. “Billiards now matches the popularity of basketball among Filipinos, especially the youth. Support for this sport should be encouraged and enhanced,” Villar said. In 2009, Villar started the Villards Cup which provided budding billiards players a venue to compete against amateur players and play alongside veteran players like Orcollo, Efren ‘Bata Reyes, Alex Pagulayan, Ronnie Alcano, Django Bustamante, Gandy Valle, Warren Kiamco, Lee Van Corteza, Ramil Gallego, Roberto Gomez and others. This year, the Cup will resume on September 23 at Starmall San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

This article was first published in Business World, a national daily newspaper, on Saturday April 13th, 1996. It is reprinted here with the permission of the author. Ted Lerner. ...back to the Efren Reyes profile at billiardsforum.com WorkingClass Hero April 13, 1996, by Ted Lerner Efren "Bata" Reyes is more than just one of the best pool players in the world. To many, he is a living legend, writes TED LERNER IT IS A HOT and sunny Saturday afternoon in late March and Efren Reyes is putting on an exhibition. The town is Angeles City, Efren's home town, and the place is Margarita Ville, a popular bar and restaurant on Field's Avenue. Efren has come here at the invitation of his American friend, John, the owner, for a day of some friendly pool. The challengers today are mostly foreigners, who make up the majority of Margarita Ville's customers. They have lined up for a chance to take on the master, to get their picture taken with him, and to be able to one day say to their friends around the bar, "I once played against Efren Reyes, the greatest pool player in the world." The bet for each match is P500. First man to win seven games wins the money. Of course, Efren has to give every challenger a major handicap. He practically gives the game away. In 9Ball, where the balls have to be run consecutively until the winning nine ball is sunk, all the opponent has to do is sink the four, the six or the nine and he wins.
