Dear Parish Family, Every year during lent we celebrate the scrutinies with our elect. I want to share with you a brief overview of these special rites and their meaning using a question and answer format.

What are the scrutinies? They are three special rites prescribed by Holy Mother Church for the elect.

What do the scrutinies do? The scrutinies spiritually help uncover and heal everything that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect. The scrutinies also draw out and strengthen all that is good, strong and upright, thus strengthening our elect in Christ and helping them to hold fast to him.

Who are Elect? The elect are men and women who will celebrate the three sacraments of initiation during the Easter Vigil. The Sacraments of Initiation are , Confirmation and Holy Communion.

When are the scrutinies celebrated? Usually at one mass on the third, fourth and fifth Sunday of Lent.

What does the celebration of the rite involve? Each scrutiny mass has prescribed readings taken from the respective Sunday of year A. Currently we are in year B, but the readings for year A are proclaimed within the scrutiny mass. The gospel readings are long and beautiful, and offer an underlying baptismal focus – the Samaritan Woman, the Man Born Blind, and the Raising of Lazarus. The rite itself is celebrated immediately following the homily. The rite includes prayers for the elect, a prayer of exorcism, followed by the laying on of hands – if possible! The elect are then dismissed or invited to remain.

Do we, the wider community have any role or function here? Absolutely! We are encouraged to support our elect who are journeying towards full reception into the family of the Church. Our role is one of accompaniment. Our elect’s sponsors represent all of us in this supportive role of accompaniment. Together we can support our Elect by our presence and through our continued prayer for them.

May God bless our elect, their sponsors and our entire RCIA team abundantly.

Wishing you a blessed and happy week ahead, Fr. Liam

COVID PANDEMIC UPDATE

DISPENSATION FROM THE OBLIGATION TO ATTEND MASS **The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass for persons with health reasons or concerns remains in effect for all in the Archdiocese until further notice. Because of this, those wishing to participate in Mass and receive Holy Communion can do so by attending any Mass any day of the week. The obligation to keep a holy Sabbath remains, and Catholics are reminded that, even while homebound, they are to devote themselves to, among other practices, personal prayer, meditation on the readings from the Sunday Mass and the making of a spiritual Communion.**

Those who are at risk or concerned that they or their family might become sick should stay at home and view live- streamed or online Masses. We urge those who have serious health issues, who are most vulnerable, who are not feeling well, or who fear for their own health, to refrain from attending church during this time.**
