  • November 2014 Edition of the Donn Mcclean Racing Newsletter
Welcome to the November 2014 edition of the Donn McClean Racing newsletter. Looking ahead These are the golden weekends of the National Hunt season. Morgiana Hurdle/Paddy Power Gold Cup weekend has just passed, and the schedule over the next few weeks now, leading up to the end of the year, is just about as good as it gets: 22nd/23rd November: Ascot Hurdle, Betfair Chase, Troytown Chase 29th/30th November: Hennessy Gold Cup, Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, Drinmore Chase 6th/7th December: Tingle Creek Chase, John Durkan Chase 13th/14th December: December Gold Cup, International Hurdle 20th/21st December: Long Walk Hurdle, Ladbroke Hurdle 26th-29th December: King George VI Chase, Lexus Chase, Christmas Hurdle, Paddy Power Chase, Welsh Grand National Over the next few weeks, we are probably going to see Sprinter Sacre, Simonsig, Cue Card, Silviniaco Conti, Faugheen, The New One, Djakadam, Smad Place, Bobs Worth, Lord Windermere, Vautour, and just about every other top National Hunt horse in training. The six-week period that runs from now until the end of the calendar year is probably the most exciting six-week period of the season! Looking back After a good end to the Flat season, Private Clients of Donn McClean Racing have also made a good start to the National Hunt season. Open Eagle (advised ante post at 12/1) ran out an easy winner of the November Handicap at Doncaster to ensure that the Flat season ended on a high, and the National Hunt season got off to a good start with the Open meeting at Cheltenham last weekend.

  • The History of Oaklawn Park
The History of Oaklawn Park 1900s Desiring to build a track closer to downtown, John Condon and Dan Stuart, who also ran Southern Club and Turf Exchange, a popular downtown Hot Springs night spot, and brothers Louis and Charles Cella of St. Louis formed the Oaklawn Jockey Club in 1904. Celebrated Chicago architect Zachary Taylor Davis is hired to design Oaklawn’s glass-enclosed, heated grandstand – among the first of its kind in the country. The grandstand reportedly seated 1,500 people and cost $500,000. Davis designed Wrigley Field, the longtime home of the Chicago Cubs, a decade later. Feb. 15, 1905 – The inaugural meet opens and runs through March 18. 1910s March 11, 1916 – Owner Louis A. Cella returns racing to Oaklawn after nine years 1 of political uncertainty in Arkansas. Cella, from St. Louis, was a bookmaker, horseman and financier and started running tracks, both in his hometown and in New Orleans. He later joined his brother, Charles J. Cella in operating Douglas Park and Latonia Race Course in Kentucky. For a time, they challenged the preeminence of Matt Winn and Churchill Downs in the Blue Grass state. Fabled mare Pan Zareta won the feature that opening day and goes 3-for-3 on the meet. March 8, 1917 – After one race in Mexico, Old Rosebud makes a winning debut at Oaklawn, 33 months after winning the Kentucky Derby in 1914. He would win again a week later, but would finish third at 137 lbs. to Pan Zareta at 113 when they met March 24. Old Rosebud would turn the tables April 6 in an allowance race en route to leading the nation in handicap earnings that year.

  • THE 68TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for Two-Year-Olds Were Held for the First Time in 1946 at Tokyo
FROM: Yoshiyasu Honda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: December 11, 2016 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 68TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for two-year-olds were held for the first time in 1946 at Tokyo. As the number of contenders increased, championship races—the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes) and the Hanshin Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies)—which determined the top two-year-olds of the season in eastern and western Japan, respectively, were established in 1949. In conjunction with the new grading system implemented, the two races were designated G1 status in 1984. In 1991, the two races were divided by gender into two separate G1 events; the Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes for two-year-old fillies and the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings, then renamed “Hanshin Juvenile Fillies” and “Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes”, respectively, in 2001. The race, which started off initially as a 1,200-meter sprint, was extended to 1,400 meters in 1960 and to 1,600 meters in 1962. In 2010, the race was opened to foreign runners. Recent winners of the race include many successful G1 champions such as two-time Horse of the Year Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet) who won seven G1 titles; Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week), also Horse of the Year of 2010 and subsequent winner of six G1 races; and 2009 champion Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha) who subsequently won the Triple Crown titles for three-year-old fillies—the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m), the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1, 2,400m) and the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m)—in 2010.
