Dear Friends in Christ,

Our Lenten Forty Hours of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin this Monday, April 1st at 6pm with a Solemn Mass of Exposition, which will conclude with a and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. After the Mass, several priests will be on hand to hear confessions, and this will serve as our Lenten service. We will conclude that night with Compline, or Night Prayer, the final hour of prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office.

The Liturgy of the Hours is the daily prayer of the , a prayer of meditation and dialogue between the Church and her Lord, through which the Church fulfils the exhortation of St. Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ for you.” Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy written by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council, describes the Liturgy of the Hours in this way: “The Liturgy of the Hours is truly the voice of the Bride herself addressed to her Bridegroom. It is the very prayer which Christ himself together with his Body addresses to the Father.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, paragraph 84).

There are five of the Liturgy: the Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Daytime Prayer (prayed late morning, midday, or early afternoon, or all three), Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer. Each of these Hours of prayer includes selections from the Psalms that are prayed with an antiphon, a verse from the Sacred Scriptures such as we sing at Mass during Communion. Two of these Hours, Morning and Evening Prayer, include a canticle: the Canticle of Zechariah from Luke 1:68-79 for Morning Prayer, known as the Benedictus, and the Canticle of Mary from Luke 1:46-55 for Evening Prayer, known as the Magnificat. During our 40 Hours Devotion, we will pray Night Prayer both Monday and Tuesday night, as well as Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer on Tuesday, and Morning Prayer again on Wednesday before concluding the 40 Hours Devotion with Mass and Benediction at 9am. During the 40 Hours, the church will remain open to provide an opportunity for us all to come spend time with the Lord Jesus in prayer.

Also, at the opening Mass of Exposition as well as during Morning and Evening prayer, a brief homily will be given on the theme of penance, healing, and reconciliation in the Church in the wake of the suffering caused by the sexual abuse scandal. Our Robert has asked all of us in the Diocese of Charleston to pray this especially for these intentions, and so we will make it the intention of our 40 Hours Devotion: that those who have been the victims of sexual abuse at the hands of clergy or others in power in the Church will receive the grace they need for healing and peace; that those who have abused those entrusted to their care, or who caused such abuse to continue by concealment or inaction, will confess their sin with true contrition of heart; and that the entire Body of Christ may be healed of every wound.

OFFICE OF THE BISHOP March 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Soon, our diocese will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection. Your support of this collection serves Jesus in some of the most marginalized communities in our world. In rural communities in Afghanistan, for example, children have limited access to education because of distance and the danger of commuting to public schools. In a remote village in Ghor, one of the poorest provinces of the country, an estimated 80% of adults are illiterate, and the illiteracy rate is even higher for women. Most villagers are farmers who never attended school. The closest school was too far and the road too dangerous for young children to attend. But you helped bring a community-based classroom to this remote village. Your generosity made it possible for children to attend school and has offered them a more hopeful and secure future. Such programs have been implemented across Afghanistan for 15 years and have helped more than 23,000 students build more prosperous lives. Children across Afghanistan, and indeed, the world, depend on your support to go to school and have bright futures. Your support of this collection makes a difference for so many around the globe. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection this year. To learn more about the collection and the people who benefit, please visit www.usccb.org/catholic-relief. Support the collection, and answer the knock of Jesus in disguise. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert E. ST ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH MARCH 31, 2019 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT IGLESIA CATÓLICA DE
