  • Applicant UNESCO Global Geopark
Applicant UNESCO Global Geopark Mourne Gullion Strangford, UK Geographical and geological summary 1. Physical and human geography The Mourne Gullion Strangford Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark (aUGGp) is midway between the cities of Belfast (UK) and Dublin (Republic of Ireland) and is located on the main road and rail network that connects the two. Belfast has a population of 340,220 people whilst Dublin has a population of 1,346,359 people. The main city is Newry that is within 1-hour travelling time of two international airports (Dublin and Belfast International), one regional airport (George Best Belfast City), and two international passenger ferry ports (Warrenpoint and Dublin). The Mourne Gullion Strangford aUGGp is located in the SE of Northern Ireland, adjacent to the border with the Republic of Ireland. The aUGGp has an area of 960 sq km, and a population of 100,322. The mean population density is 106.62 people per sq km but this ranges from the sparsely populated upland areas to the urban centres of Newry, Downpatrick, Newcastle and Kilkeel. The region boasts 3 discrete upland regions in the Dromara Hills, Mourne Mountains, and Slieve Gullion. The highest point is within the Mourne Mountains and is Slieve Donard at 850 m. The uplands are surrounded by lowlands covered in glacial sediment, much of which is in the form of drumlins. The mountains are dissected by valleys formed by ice during the last glaciation. Carlingford Lough, a drowned glacial valley, lies on the southern edge of the proposed Geopark, and Strangford Lough, the largest sea inlet in the UK and Ireland, lies at the eastern edge of the proposed Geopark, both of which are important to the early human history of the region and later as major transport routes.

  • Mourne and the Great War
1 MOURNE AND THE GREAT WAR A FOREWORD FROM THE SCHOMBERG FESTIVAL COMMITTEE... MOURNE AND THE GREAT WAR This year, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Events and commemorations organised to mark this occasion across the Province have sparked much interest here in the Kingdom of Mourne as to the history of that time. The Schomberg Festival Committee’s aim through this booklet is to record the impact of World War One and the indelible mark it has left on the Kingdom of Mourne, its peo- ple, industries, history and traditions. The Great War as it was known lasted four years and cost the lives of almost 70 local men; many, many more were injured or left traumatised by the dreadful horrors witnessed in the trenches of Western Europe, on other battlefields across the world, and on the high seas. The Schomberg Festival Committee hope that this booklet will be used as an educational and historical resource for future generations to help better inform local folk, especially our schools, youth groups and community organisations, as to the importance of remembering the great sacrifices made on our behalf by local men and women during The Great War. We are very grateful to all of those who helped and contributed to the production of this ‘Mourne and The Great War’ booklet, especially the pupils and staff of Kilkeel High School who carried out extensive research, author Quincey Dougan and the Heritage Lottery Fund who made this project possible. We hope that it gives a better insight into the life and times of Mourne during that period known as The Great War, the War that was to end all Wars.

  • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

  • Edgar Events
EEddggaarr EEvveennttss Researching and sharing Edgar family history No. 65, June 2012 DNA Update by James Edgar ([email protected]) Last month, I wrote “It’s interesting that one of the very recent tests done is one of those new cousins—Gordon Edgar of Saffron Walden, UK. Gordon’s earliest ancestor is John Edgar b. abt 1827 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.” Gordon respectfully responded that his earliest ancestor was much further back—he wrote me: “I claim descent from one James Edgar of Kirkmichael (Ayrshire), who married in 1723 at Coylton, Ayrshire and I can provide documentation. My sub-set in Ayrshire has been isolated from the Dumfries epicentre before the Reformation.” I do apologise, but at the time I wrote that last piece, the 1827 date was the best information I had, and I did confuse the two Kirkmichaels – in Dumfrieshire and another in Ayrshire! Thanks, Gordon, for setting me straight. Now, moving on… We have two new tests coming up soon—I phoned a couple of unsuspecting Edgar males in New Brunswick, Canada, and both of them have test kits on the way! Craig Jay Edgar (known as “CJ”) lives in Moncton with his parents, just finished university, and knew little about his ancestry. Their descent is from Scotland, so we’ll see what the test results bring. CJ’s father, also Craig, may provide us with some solid ancestry. The other test belongs to Jack Edgar of Rothesay, NB. When I called him, I could detect a bit of an accent. Then he explained he was originally from Comber, Co.
