HORNING REACH The PARISH PAPER For Horning and (Associated with the NIB magazine)

APRIL 2021 No. 521 From your Parish Priest

A year ago, I wrote in this magazine: “When we don’t have an answer to a question or problem, many resort to simply saying “It’s complicated”. Well, as we all now know, life has just become particularly complicated and we shall continue to face and deal with the Coronavirus threat for weeks, if not months, to come. It will impact our individual lives, nations, and economies around the world, and the after effects will persist long after we have conquered the virus itself.”

Even though there were scientists suggesting worst-case scenarios of a UK COVID death toll in six figures, I suspect most of us still welcomed and favoured the more up-beat predictions of ‘a vaccine by the autumn’. It was reminiscent of those wartime expectations: “The boys will be home by Christmas.” We didn’t expect to be still in lockdown mode a year later, with another disrupted Easter, but here we are – and that is perhaps the point. Here we are! We must mourn the loss of those who have died and commiserate with those grieving for loved ones taken prematurely. We must give thanks for those still caring for the sick despite any risk to themselves, and celebrate the achievements of research teams and companies providing the vaccines that will protect us and ultimately release from these COVID constraints. It will not go away, but it is our human nature – our God-given human ingenuity – which when faced with a mortal threat will confront it head-on, and not give up until it is overcome.

The Easter season and the Easter story is always about new life, new opportunities, new hopes, new futures, emerging from even the most hope-less of situations. The despair of the disciples on Good Friday is never forgotten; it doesn’t get airbrushed conveniently out of the picture to make everything sweetness and light again. The shadow of the Cross is permanent, for all time, because the memory of the transition from the despair of Good Friday to the hope of Easter Day is exactly what sustains us, even in the darkest times. Whatever we suffer, God in Christ has been there, done that, got the T-shirt – to use that flippant modern phrase – and God is with us now. Yes we must mourn, and commiserate, and give thanks, and celebrate and never forget, but most of all be hopeful and communicate and share that Christian Easter hope with those around us, near or far.

With every blessing, for a hope-filled Easter. David Smith, Rector.

Pennywort

The Broads Authority is asking river users and the local community to be on the look- out for an outbreak of the floating pennywort on the River Ant but asks that if found, not to disturb it. The aggressively invasive floating pennywort ( Hydrocotyle ranunculoides ) has been seen on the River Ant between Tonnage Bridge and Wayford Bridge, near . The plant spreads rapidly in water and can grow up to 20cm a day, creating a dense raft of vegetation, which clogs up streams and rivers.

The floating pennywort is such a successful invader that just a single fragment of it drifting downstream can soon dominate an expanse of water. It outcompetes native aquatic plants, blocking out the light they need, leading to the loss of native plants and a sterile river ecosystem.
