Cornerstone Schools Newsletter Building Futures with Love Friday 14th May 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a visit from our School Improvement Adviser this week who spent two days visiting classrooms, looking at pupil books, chatting with children and meeting with subject leaders. There are lots of things to celebrate, including how quickly the children have settled back into school, the amount of work already in their books, and the way staff across the schools are now working together as a single team to support and advise each other in their specialist subjects. Our next step is to develop our website and provide more opportunities for staff to get in to each other’s schools to observe good practice.

Four Corner Challenge! I thought I’d share an update on Mr Irons’ four corner challenge. The average steps scores for each school have been counted daily and all groups have passed a significant landmark!

 Ravensworth School have gone through Barton on the map and are approaching East Cowton.  Barton School have gone through East Cowton on their way to Kirkby Fleetham.  East Cowton School have just passed through Kirkby Fleetham.  Kirkby Fleetham have reached Richmond and closing in on the teachers’ group who are currently at Ravensworth.

A massive well done to all the children who are trying hard to increase their step count each day. Come on teachers – you’ve got some catching up to do!

Getting to know what your child is doing online PCSO Sharon Wilson from North police has asked us to share with parents NSPCC getting-to-know-what-your-child-is-doing-online/. We have already shared this link, but thought it worth sharing again. If you need any help with supporting your child to keep safe online, please do get in touch with your child’s class teacher and we will do our best to help.

The Big Ask Children’s Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza is conducting the biggest ever children’s consultation to find out what they think is important for the future. We will be taking part in the survey before half term as we think it’s great for our children to know that they have a voice in the big decisions that are made for them. Please see information attached with this newsletter.

Kind regards,

Mrs H Dudman

News from Class 1

It has been another busy few weeks in class 1 and we are absolutely loving our class story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’, we have created and designed contraptions to stop the seagulls; retold the story through story boards and puppets; we have created our own pulley system outside which the children have loved using in their play and this week we have been creating our own disgusting sandwiches to stop the seagulls and writing instructions to help someone else make them. We have also continued to learn all about Grace Darling and why she is a significant person and the children came up with some amazing adjectives to describe the kind of person she was. In art the children are enjoying learning about colour mixing and how we can make different shades of different colours by colour mixing. Music has definitely been a hit as well as we have been looking at the sea shanty ‘Wellerman’ and looking at the rhythm and adding texture to the song using instruments. The children keep asking when we can do it again and spend their discovery time singing and humming the song!

A message from our school Sports Leaders Our sports leaders were excited to sort and set up our new rounders equipment this week! Everyone was keen to use the new bats, balls and posts in PE and at playtime, which are ‘way better!’ according to Faith, Boo and Chloe.

News from Class 1 This week in Class 1 we have continued our Under the Sea topic with lots of hands-on fun with water and sea creatures. We’ve been counting, reading, role playing, potion-making, poem-writing, painting and singing!

We’ve also had a springtime focus on sunflowers. We’ve planted seeds and learnt what sunflowers need to grow. We keep moving our tray of pots into the sunshine, in hopes that the seeds will sprout soon! We’ve studied and watched the life cycle of a sunflower and even made some gorgeous pictures of sunflowers.

Forest School - Nature and Wellbeing This week in forest school the children had a magically quiet and relaxing time observing the beautiful bluebells to celebrate World Mental Health Awareness Week’s Nature Theme. They were asked to make friends with one bluebell in particular and study it’s colour, smell and texture before introducing their friend to the other children. Fin said, “I know now that I can be calm in the woods not just excited.” Niven remarked that if he hadn’t

slowed down he wouldn’t have noticed how beautiful nature is!

Exciting music news! We are very excited to say that in the second half of summer term, Class 2 will be learning to play the recorder! We will stay safe by allotting each child their own instrument and we will be using the book ‘Recorder from the beginning, book one’ to support our learning. If any of you happen to have a copy of this book around your house from the last time we played recorders, we would be very grateful if we could add it back to our collection of books at school. Thank you!

News from Class 1 This week we have been focusing on improving our mental health so the children in class one have been appreciating the nature surrounding our lovely school and exploring it using their senses to help them to feel calm and ready for learning.

Our year one children have been maths detectives this week exploring numbers up to 50 and our Year 2 pupils and been learning about measures and also trying to convince their teachers that they understand mathematical language! We have continued our topic work focusing on Grace Darling and exploring different historical sources of information. In music we have had a fabulous time singing along to sea shanties! We have been exploring the texture of music, and discussing the structure and tempo of a song.

As always, we have been very busy in Class 1 with some super learning taking place! The children are still super engrossed in our class text ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ and have produced some lovely writing to go alongside this. Most recently, we have written diary entries from the point of view of Mr Grinling and have written instructions for how to make disgusting sandwiches! We even got to make and try our own disgusting sandwiches with Miss Pole (although it turned out that some children liked their ‘disgusting’ sandwich and have even requested this at home ). We have continued to explore Grace Darling in our history sessions and have had lots of great discussions about why Grace Darling is a significant individual and what words we would use to describe her e.g., hero, brave, kind etc. In P.E., we have been working really hard with Mr Irons to learn all of the skills needed in a game of cricket… we can’t wait to put these into practice over the next few weeks! Forest Schools is still a massive hit with the children and we had a brilliant session today looking for bug friends and making different types of dens. Our next session will be with class 2 on Friday 28th May and we are already looking forward to this.

School admin information Thank you to everyone who donated bags for today’s Great North Air Ambulance Collection, we will let you know how much was raised as soon as we hear.

Mental health champions This week, the mental health champions led a collective worship all about mental health. They talked about what mental health is, why it is important and how we can support our mental health. They also talked about what we are doing in school to support mental health e.g., lunchtime clubs, climb the mountain, check in boxes and our new buddy bench (more to follow).
